Covert violence occurs in all social institutions—including families and close relationships, education, workplaces, politics, mass media, and healthcare—each with its own unique power dynamics that shape the incidence and patterns of these vicious acts. This book focuses on the types of surreptitious murder and mayhem that perpetrators intend to go unnoticed by would-be victims—until it’s too late. When such attacks are carried out with efficiency and competence, they may be disguised in official records as the result of illness, accident, or intentional self-harm, only on occasion to be later reclassified as the brutal crimes they are. This compelling and much-needed book is for all those who seek to understand—and strive to prevent—violence in society.

This catalog accompanies Between Form and Content: Perspectives on Jacob Lawrence + Black Mountain College, the first exhibition to focus on a watershed moment in the seminal career of Jacob Lawrence (1917–2000), when he was invited by Josef Albers to teach a painting course at the Black Mountain College summer art institute of 1946. Lawrence's presence at Black Mountain College was part of its forward-thinking initiative to integrate the campus community beginning in the early 1940s. Curator Julie Levin Caro's introductory essay highlights the impact of Lawrence's exposure to Albers's Bauhaus-inspired theories and teaching methods and explores the ways Lawrence's pedagogy continuously fed his artistic explorations. In addition to Lawrence's paintings and prints, Caro writes about the artwork and recollections of a number of other artists at Black Mountain College during the summer of 1946, including Lawrence's wife Gwendolyn Knight Lawrence as well as Josef and Anni Albers, Leo Amino, Jean Varda, Ruth Asawa, Ray Johnson, and Beaumont and Nancy Newhall. Curator Jeff Arnal's essay introduces the work of the international artists commissioned to expand pathways into Lawrence's paintings through their contemporary, new media works. The catalog also includes artist statements by music animator/filmmaker Martha Coburn, curator/writer Jace Clayton (DJ Rupture), composer/ performer Tyondai Braxton and installation artist Grace Villamil.Between Form and Content will be on display at the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center in Asheville, NC from September 28, 2018 through January 12, 2019. This gentle introduction to discrete mathematics is written for first and second year math majors, especially those who intend to teach. The text began as a set of lecture notes for the discrete mathematics course at the University of Northern Colorado. This course serves both as an introduction to topics in discrete math and as the "introduction to proof" course for math majors. The course is usually taught with a large amount of student inquiry, and this text is written to help facilitate this.Four main topics are covered: counting, sequences, logic, and graph theory. Along the way proofs are introduced, including proofs by contradiction, proofs by induction, and combinatorial proofs. The book contains over 360 exercises, including 230 with solutions and 130 more involved problems suitable for homework. There are also Investigate activities throughout the text to support active, inquiry based learning. While there are many fine discrete math textbooks available, this text has the following advantages: It is written to be used in an inquiry rich course. It is written to be used in a course for future math teachers. It is open source, with low cost print editions and free electronic editions.Update: as of July 2017, this 2nd edition has been updated, correcting numerous typos and a few mathematical errors. Pagination is almost identical to the earlier printing of the 2nd edition. For a list of changes, see the book's website: http: //discretetext.oscarlevin.com

In this collection of New York Times best-selling author Michael Levin's journalism and blog pieces, he's funny, angry, delighted, outraged, frustrated, and relieved, sometimes all at the same time. If you read only one book this year, maybe you should read something more useful. But with Levin, you'll have fun on every page.

Settled by the Dutch, Bergenfield--originally named Schraalenburgh, then Bergen Fields--grew from a bucolic hub of chair manufacturing in the 19th century to a bustling New York City suburb. Like much of northern New Jersey, Bergenfield saw its population swell in the 1920s with the building of the George Washington Bridge to Manhattan and again after World War II. Bergenfield natives are deeply proud of their hometown's landmarks and traditions, especially the c. 1799 South Presbyterian Church, the pond where Tunis R. Cooper established his chair factory, parades and youth athletic programs, and a high school marching band without peer. Drawing on archival photographs and other materials from the Bergenfield Museum, Bergenfield Public Library, and residents past and present, Bergenfield tells the story of this diverse community of 28,000 in the heart of Bergen County.

Explore long-lost and never-before-seen images of downtown, Mayfair Mall's Ice Chalet, Brady Street, the Mitchell Park Domes, Milwaukee County Stadium, and much, much more. Introduced by Kodak in 1935, Kodachrome quickly became popular with professional and amateur photographers in the years after World War II. Countless Kodachrome slides now lie neglected and discarded in attics and basements like tiny time capsules just waiting to be rediscovered. Sharing more than 140 full-color photos from his own collection, Adam Levin, curator of the popular Old Milwaukee Facebook group, leads a stroll down memory lane into the Milwaukee of yesteryear.

Americans are living through a social crisis. Our politics are polarized and bitterly divided. Culture wars rage on campuses, social media, and sometimes in the streets and public squares. And for too many Americans, alienation can descend into despair, weakening families and communities.Left and right alike have responded with anger at our institutions, and use only metaphors of destruction to describe the path forward: cancelling, defunding, draining the swamp. But, as Yuval Levin argues, this is a misguided prescription, rooted in a defective diagnosis. The social crisis we confront is defined not by an oppressive presence but by a debilitating absence of the forces that unite us and militate against alienation. In A Time to Build, now updated with a new epilogue, Levin argues that today is not a time to tear down, but rather to build and rebuild by committing ourselves to the institutions around us. From the military to churches, from families to schools, these institutions provide the forms and structures we need to be free. By taking concrete steps to help them be more trustworthy, we can renew the ties that bind Americans to one another.

Americans are living through a social crisis. Populist firebrands - on left and right alike - propose to address the crisis through acts of tearing down. They describe themselves as destroying oppressive establishments, clearing weeds, draining swamps. But, as acclaimed conservative intellectual Yuval Levin argues, this is a misguided prescription, rooted in a defective diagnosis. The social crisis we confront is defined not by an oppressive presence but by a debilitating absence of forces that unite us and militate against alienation. Both Republicans and Democrats overwhelmingly respond to crisis by threatening to dismantle institutions that they perceive as belonging to their political opponents. Both sides have turned "institution" into a pejorative. Levin argues that this is misguided - this is not a time to tear down, he says, but rather to build and rebuild by committing ourselves to the institutions around us and strengthening their capacity to shape and unite us. Institutions - from the military to churches to families and universities - give us the forms we require to be free. They give us a sense of community, shared identity and a sense of belonging to something greater than ourselves. What we perceive as a social crisis, Levin argues, is really an institutional crisis. By rebuilding and restoring collective trust in our institutions, we rebuild and restore trust in society.

A Time to Build: From Family and Community to Congress and the Campus, How Recommitting to Our Institutions Can Revive the American Dream
A leading conservative intellectual argues that to renew America we must recommit to our institutionsAmericans are living through a social crisis. Our politics is polarized and bitterly divided. Culture wars rage on campus, in the media, social media, and other arenas of our common life. And for too many Americans, alienation can descend into despair, weakening families and communities and even driving an explosion of opioid abuse. Left and right alike have responded with populist anger at our institutions, and use only metaphors of destruction to describe the path forward: cleaning house, draining swamps. But, as Yuval Levin argues, this is a misguided prescription, rooted in a defective diagnosis. The social crisis we confront is defined not by an oppressive presence but by a debilitating absence of the forces that unite us and militate against alienation. As Levin argues, now is not a time to tear down, but rather to build and rebuild by committing ourselves to the institutions around us. The Queen: The Forgotten Life Behind an American Myth
Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award in BiographyIn this critically acclaimed true crime tale of "welfare queen" Linda Taylor, a Slate editor reveals a "wild, only-in-America story" of political manipulation and murder (Attica Locke, Edgar Award-winning author). On the South Side of Chicago in 1974, Linda Taylor reported a phony burglary, concocting a lie about stolen furs and jewelry. The detective who checked it out soon discovered she was a welfare cheat who drove a Cadillac to collect ill-gotten government checks. And that was just the beginning: Taylor, it turned out, was also a kidnapper, and possibly a murderer. A desperately ill teacher, a combat-traumatized Marine, an elderly woman hungry for companionship -- after Taylor came into their lives, all three ended up dead under suspicious circumstances. But nobody -- not the journalists who touted her story, not the police, and not presidential candidate Ronald Reagan -- seemed to care about anything but her welfare thievery.Growing up in the Jim Crow South, Taylor was made an outcast because of the color of her skin. As she rose to infamy, the press and politicians manipulated her image to demonize poor black women. Part social history, part true-crime investigation, Josh Levin's mesmerizing book, the product of six years of reporting and research, is a fascinating account of American racism, and an expos of the "welfare queen" myth, one that fueled political debates that reverberate to this day.The Queen tells, for the first time, the fascinating story of what was done to Linda Taylor, what she did to others, and what was done in her name. "In the finest tradition of investigative reporting, Josh Levin exposes how a story that once shaped the nation's conscience was clouded by racism and lies. As he stunningly reveals in this "invaluable work of nonfiction," the deeper truth, the messy truth, tells us something much larger about who we are (David Grann, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Killers of the Flower Moon).

From Ars PoeticaSix monarch butterfly cocoons clinging to the back of your throat-- you could feel their gold wings trembling. . .Dana Levin's singular voice and talent are unmistakable. Wedding Day is Levin's quest to synthesize the public and private, to find pattern and connection amid the disparate elements of modern life. Relentless in her examinations, she ultimately puts faith in poetry, believing it is the truest means--and best chance--to bridge the chasms between soul and society. Readers will put faith in Levin's poetry as well.Dana Levin grew up in California's Mojave Desert. Her debut volume, In the Surgical Theatre, received nearly every honor available for first books and emerging writers. Other honors include fellowships and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Witter Bynner Foundation and the Library of Congress, the Rona Jaffe and Whiting Foundations. A 2007 Guggenheim Fellow, Levin chairs the Creative Writing and Literature Department at College of Santa Fe in Sante Fe, New Mexico From Library JournalFor her debut collection, In the Surgical Theatre, Levin (creative writing, Coll. of Santa Fe) won the 1999 American Poetry Review/Honickman First Book Prize and the John C. Zacharis First Book Award from Ploughshares; it's no wonder, then, that her follow-up has been anticipated by academic scholars and poetry lovers, who won't be disappointed. While her first work focused on the gritty details of physical matter, often its desecration or decay, Levin's current work offers insight into the most personal and unspoken thoughts that can be easily overlooked: "we were losing our bodies/ digitized salt of bytes and speed we were becoming a powder/ light/ bicarbonate/ what we might have seen, if we had looked." Her voice speaks to the private wars of self and the dark violence of reflection. Readers will find that this work carries the pulse of their darkest sorrows, in the breath of their humanity. Highly recommended for academic and public libraries.--April Davis, STG International, NIST, Oakotn, VA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information "intimate and hyponotic...whether turning her gaze inward or outward, these poems question the moral, aesthetic, and metaphysic needs that poetry exists to fill."--Ploughshares "Dana Levin's poems are extravagant...her mind keeps making unexpected connections and the poems push beyond convention...they surprise us."--LA Times "Images that are satisfyingly clear...and excitingly inexplicable"--Robert Pinsky, Washington Post
