See the world through April's eyes and receive a first-hand account of what it's like to be prisoner in a madhouse.About the AuthorApril Showers lives in Central Florida with her emotional support dog, Dottie. She is recently divorced after 29 years of marriage. Her husband could not take the extreme highs and lows of her bipolar disorder. In extreme highs of mania, Showers would be uncontrollable, and in her dark times of depression, she would not get out of bed for days and neglect herself and her household. Showers was diagnosed at the age of 45 with Bipolar I disorder and put on medication. The youngest of seven children, she believes mental illness runs in her family, as two other siblings suffer from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Showers suspects that her father was an undiagnosed bipolar who self-medicated with alcohol. Showers has a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a master's degree in Public Administration. She was a school teacher for over 15 years before being fired from her teaching job due to a manic episode. She currently works as a peer counselor for the local behavioral health center. She absolutely loves her job and finds it extremely rewarding. Showers has a good support system of family and close friends who tell her when they see signs of the illness creeping in. Her Catholic faith got her through the dark times of depression when she was suicidal and kept her safe during the extreme highs of mania. It is her hope that by sharing her story, she can convey to others that there is hope for people living with Bipolar I disorder, and April is proof of the resiliency of the human psyche.

Barry Jenkins and the Legacies of Slavery

In this book, Delphine Letort examines the plots and ploys that intermingle fiction and history in Barry Jenkins’ television adaptation of The Underground Railroad, allowing viewers to experience enslavement and flight through the eyes of the female protagonist, Cora. Letort demonstrates how the fusion of imaginary and real elements underlies a poetic visual and narrative style to guide viewers’ emotional and epistemological understanding of the past. She posits that another imagery of enslavement can be created—one that does not position the black woman at the margins of slavery cinema and history—as the mise-en-scène of the underground as a symbolic space representing the hidden and the repressed opens new fictional possibilities for imagining the intimate life of the enslaved. Ultimately, this book reveals how the serial format proves instrumental in transforming the gaze on the racial subject, using repetition and difference from one episode to the next to prompt new ways of seeing. Scholars of film and television studies, popular culture, history, and critical race theory will find this book of particular interest.

A new Batman s deadly crusade against the criminals of Gotham City begins! Bruce Wayne, battle-broken and out of commission after his epic showdown with Gotham s famous villain Bane, has appointed a new Dark Knight to keep the bad guys at bay. Jean-Paul Valley (a.k.a. Azrael) has assumed the role of the caped crusader, but without Bruce s integrity as a calming influence, Jean-Paul is swiftly getting out of hand, alienating both Robin and Commissioner Gordon. Meanwhile, the hulking baddie Bane is still on the loose, while new villainous foes are introduced onto the battlefield that is Gotham, including master marksman Mekros and sinister sniper Gunhawk. Also, watch out for the return of familiar faces such as the serial killer Abattoir and, of course, the eerily jovial Joker. Can the new Dark Knight face these nefarious challenges without Bruce Wayne and Robin? Might his violent manner of crime-fighting permanently cripple the already beleaguered Gotham?
Naval Advising and Assistance

Naval Advising and Assistance

This original edited volume is the only book on naval advising. Drawing upon the work of scholars and practitioners from all over the world, it takes a comparative and global approach to examining the history, theory and evolution of naval advising and assistance. Starting with a brief history of the evolution of naval advising, the book then moves to late-19th century naval advising efforts. These generally involved individuals such as the American adventurer in China, Philo McGiffin, but also included State-sponsored formal missions such as the first such US effort: Colonel John Lay’s 1870s mission to Egypt. A comparative multi-national examination of the ability of non-European States such as China, Turkey and Japan to adopt Western naval methods and doctrine - and an examination of the French naval advising mission to Peru - round out the book's pre-First World War offerings. The trends in naval advising between the World Wars—particularly their use as tools of economic and political penetration—are revealed through chapters on the British naval aviation mission to Japan; the British and French naval missions to Poland; the US mission to Peru; and a comparative study of Italian naval missions in Persia, China and Spain. The latter also reveals early ideological motivations for dispatching advising missions. The Cold War saw an intensification of military advising—including naval advising—as both the Communist and the Western Powers used advising as ideological tools. The US naval missions to Nationalist China and South Vietnam are assessed, as are the Soviet naval advising efforts in East Germany and China. Together, through a wealth of original research, the studies in this book provide numerous lessons for future naval advising efforts and constitute a unique contribution to the field.

Written by leading evangelical scholars, Social Injustice, Volume I: What Evangelicals Need to Know about the World explores the Christian heritage of social justice from biblical, historical, and missiological perspectives.William Moulder and Michael Cooper have done us a great service in compiling these essays on justice from an evangelical perspective. The first three essays in this timely and important book lay out the biblical, theological and historical foundations of justice. The next seven essays address the practical application of biblical principles of justice to a wide range of issues in the global context: (1) human trafficking in India; (2) bioethics and exploitation in the global medical enterprise; (3) education and freedom in Ethiopia; (4) the care of Haitian orphans: (5) literacy in Afghanistan; (6) food production and our relationship to the land as a gift from God; and (7) membership rights. The ten chapters will challenge Christians to consider their role in stepping into social justice issues from a distinctly evangelical position. The topic is of considerable importance to the ongoing mission of God in the world. With increasing numbers of millennials and Gen Zs focused on their contribution to global change, Social Injustice provides a solid theological foundation for engaging some of the most important social issues of our day.

Michael T. Cooper's Contemporary Druidry: A Historical and Ethnographic Study is a profoundly sensitive account of a pagan identity from an evangelical Christian researcher. The work amounts to an interfaith breakthrough. Not only a sympathetic and enlightening understanding of Druidry itself, but Cooper also manages to open the possibilities of intellectual and empathetic exchange between a pagan position and a Christian one. Comfortably grounded with a balance of sociological tools and understandings, Cooper's remarkably human and informative narrative holds appeal to the insider as well as outsider, to the generally curious as well as those with specific interest.

Passives and Middles in Mainland Scandinavian

Passives and Middles in Mainland Scandinavian

This monograph explores the properties of passive and middle voice constructions in Norwegian and Swedish, concentrating on the linguistic variation related to these two constructions in Mainland Scandinavian. At an empirical level, we provide a detailed discussion of the morphosyntax and semantics of the two main types of passives in both languages, lexical (s-) and periphrasitic (bli-) passives. At a theoretical level, we propose an architecture of the language faculty where exponents play a central role. Exponents are selected to identify the structures generated by the grammar and provide a platform that make these units interpretable by the sensori-motor and conceptual-intentional interfaces. Exponents this play an essential role in determining the well-formedness of linguistic structures. We demonstrate how different syntactic structures identified and lexicalized by exponents in these two languages are capable of capturing the microvariation observed in the voice systems of these two languages in a straightforward way. The amount of linguistic information (i.e., aspect and mood) identified by each exponent in each language determines the types of complements and specifiers that can be integrated into and lexicalized by a given exponent. Although our approach shares certain affinities with other neo-constructionist approaches, a novel proposal we advance in this book is that exponents are housed in an intermediate level of structure that exists between the narrow syntax and its external interfaces. This exponency-level (?-structure) allows for a more parsimonious theoretical analysis that does not sacrifice descriptive adequacy.
