It's 1967 and 27-year-old Pan Am stewardess Susan Delaney's highest aspirations are working first class on transatlantic flights... and meeting Mr. Right. That is, until one July afternoon when Susan agrees to deliver an errant suitcase from New York to Miami Beach. She arrives just in time to find that its owner has jumped - or been thrown - off a hotel balcony. The suitcase Susan is carrying contains detailed plans for a computer on a chip, an invention of enormous military importance but one thought to be years away from reality. But whose plans are they? No one seems to know, but among the people who want those plans are the KGB, the CIA, an anti-Casto Cuban exile group, and the Mafia.Susan is recruited by Joe Klein, a handsome Israeli agent, who convinces her of the need to find the plans' rightful owner. They embark on a round-the-country odyssey aided by Sadie, a grandmotherly El Al air marshal whose knitting bag packs a lethal arsenal. There's one disturbing thing that we as readers know from the outset: that by the end of the story, someone will be murdered. And the nature of the murder is such that Susan has kept it secret until today. The Accidental Spy moves across a fascinating mid-20th-century landscape that will be familiar to viewers of Mad Men. Susan tells her story with an infectious sense of humor that will keep you reading - and laughing - well into the evening.

Who killed Sally Kahn? There hasn't been a murder in 15 years in tranquil, affluent Hardington, Massachusetts. But someone pushed a moderately wealthy 65-year-old widow down her basement stairs, and then tried to make it look like an accident. Two people will work - together and independently - to find the murderer. John Flynn, a retired Boston Police Department detective with an outstanding record, will lead the official investigation. He will solve the murder despite the best efforts of Hardington's police chief, who cannot abide the idea of a murderer on the loose in his bucolic town and so who arrests the first likely suspect. Liz Phillips has a life centered on her garden and her garden club. Sally Kahn was one of her best friends and it is Liz who found the body. But Liz is a lonely woman, her daughter married and living far away, and her husband constantly on the road. Liz will help solve the murder by using intuition, asking questions, and knowing her town. Their quest to find Sally Kahn's killer will lead Liz Phillips and Detective John Flynn into an unfamiliar world of email inboxes and wireless Internet routers, hazardous waste disposal and the economics of tearing down houses to build 'McMansions'. Their search will also take them through an emotional landscape of adultery and the simmering resentment between 'townies' and the new-money affluent.

A Wonka-Like Journey into an Ultra Private World of Decadence and ExcessFrom cooking for Martha Stewart, Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs, and Jerry Seinfeld to more than 20 of the world’s most reclusive billionaires, Chef Neal Sheldon Salisbury has been serving the world's power elite for more than 15 years. His new book, The Billionaire's Chef: Cooking for the Rich and Famished takes you on a journey around the globe and into the private world of working for, living, and travelling with the world’s billionaires. You’ll find stories and tips on event planning and social etiquette, but that’s not all. You’ll get career advice from someone who has been to the top of the game, made mistakes, and groveled his way back into the game. The book goes beyond polite smile-inspiring stories and gets into the real-life challenges lived by Chef Neal and his peers, detailing disappointments and unexpected triumphs, battles of ego, the money, the sex (or sometimes lack of it) coupled with the loneliness—all a part of the job. Written with passion, love, and respect for craft and artistry, this book focuses on what is unique about the operation of kitchen on a superyacht or plane, even an impromptu or cleverly improvised kitchen on a beach. Chef Neal offers an honest, yet surreal view of what it is like to have worked as a top private chef during the "Golden Age" (1998-2008) of superyacht building / cruising and grand estate renovation / building. Whether you read it for escapism, as a practical career reference, or to help you throw better events doesn’t really matter—just enjoy the trip.

Well, this is about me, a Hull lad, and forty-plus years of music and my life been on the road gigging, and clenching a record deal with all the hype of London... It is all about the bands to which I had been involved with throughout the years, and taking you through the highs, the lows, the booze and the adrenaline boosts. It s about me as a drummer, learning to keep the beat in the Army drum core at the young age of sixteen and leaving home for the first time after nursing my sick father through a deadly illness. I had to choose between life at home or my life in the Army, I chose the former. I was mind-set, to getting my first drum kit that I had always wanted, but my parents said "NO." From then on, I joined or created bands that swayed me through different genres, leading me in later life to become involved with many tribute shows. Did I enjoy it all? Well of course I did.

In the winter trenches and flak-filled skies of World War I, captured soldiers and pilots narrowly avoided death only to find themselves imprisoned in Germany's archipelago of brutal POW camps. After several unsuccessful escapes, a group of Allied prisoners of Holzminden - Germany's land-locked Alcatraz- hatched the most elaborate escape plan yet known. With ingenious engineering, disguises, forgery and courage, their story would electrify Britain in some of its darkest hours of the war.Drawing on never-before-seen memoirs and letters, Neal Bascomb brings this little-known story narrative to life amid the despair of the trenches and the height of patriotic duty.
Late Modernism and the Poetics of Place

Late Modernism and the Poetics of Place

Neal Alexander

This monograph offers a decisive reappraisal of both the literary history and the literary geography of Anglophone modernism by focusing attention on poetry from both sides of the Atlantic. Where recent studies of late modernism tend to regard it as an inter-war or mid-century phenomenon, this book contends that the period 1945 1975 marks a major phase of experiment and achievement in late modernist poetry. The author argues that what distinguishes the work of many late modernist poets (such as Gwendolyn Brooks, Basil Bunting, W. S. Graham, David Jones, Lorine Niedecker and Charles Olson) during this period is its multi-layered poetics of place. In part, he suggests, this is due to the engagement of individual writers with contemporary developments in human and physical geography. It is also manifest in the tendency of late modernist poets to foreground the cultural significance of regional and non-metropolitan places in their texts.

This volume contains the lectures and seminars presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Physics of New Laser Sources", the twelfth course of the Europhysics School of Quantum Electronics, held under the supervision of the Quantum Electronics Division of the European Physical Society. The Institute was held at Centro "I Cappuccini" San Miniato, Tuscany, July 11-21, 1984. The Europhysics School of Quantum Electronics was started in 1970 with the aim of providing instruction for young researchers and advanced students already engaged in the area of quantum electronics or for those wishing to switch into this area after working previously in other areas. From the outset, the School has been under the direction of Prof. F. T. Arecchi, then at the University of Pavia, now at the University of Florence, and Dr. D. Roess of Heraeus, Hanau. In 1981, Prof. H. Walther, University of Munich and Max-Planck Institut fur Quantenoptik joined as co-director. Each year the Directors choose a subj~ct of particular interest, alternating fundamental topics with technological ones, and ask colleagues specifically competent in the chosen areas to take the scientific responsibility for that course.
