This book revisits the trajectory of one section of Patrick Leigh Fermor's famous excursion on foot from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople in the 1930s. The highly regarded British travel writer and heroic wartime Special Operations Executive officer walked into Hungary as a youth of 19 at Easter and left Transylvania in August 1934. This intrepid traveler, "a cross between Indiana Jones, James Bond and Graham Greene" as the New York Times obituary put it in 2011, published his experiences half a century later. Between the Woods and the Water, that covers the part of the epic foot journey from the middle Danube to the Iron Gates, has been a bestseller since it was first published in 1986. In the present volume Michael O'Sullivan reveals the identity of the interesting characters in the travelogue, interviewing several of them eyetoeye. The many counts and barons among his 1934 contacts are a proof of Leigh Fermor's lifelong attraction to the aristocracy. Rich with photos and other documents on places and persons both from the thirties and today, the book offers a compelling social and political history of the period and the area. It provides a particular portrait of Hungary and Transylvania when they were on the brink of momentous change.

The book contains a review of Patrick Hamilton's artistic career, from his beginnings with the series Project, - covering works of architecture, which began in 1996, two years before graduating from art school - to his most recent works. Driven by a desire to move painting onto another plane, Hamilton has created a body of work along object- and concept-based lines with a foundation in his interest towards cultural, historical and literary research. Using the starting point of Santiago, the city where he has lived and worked until recently, Hamilton has woven together countless works over a time period equivalent to a career that has now lasted nearly twenty years. The visual metaphors, popular myths and historical events in them are given form in an impeccable conceptual and visual presentation, which he uses to look for answers to all of the questions which arise on a daily basis in the society of which he forms a part as a citizen and artist. His work takes place mainly in the field of photography, collage, objects and installations and includes a reflection on the concepts of work, inequality, architecture and history - particularly of Chile post-dictatorship. In this sense it is an aesthetic reflection on the consequences of the 'neoliberal revolution' implanted in Chile during the '80s and its projection in the social and cultural field from then until now. Patrick Hamilton (Leuven, Belgium, 1974) has a degree in Art from the University of Chile. He received a Guggenheim fellowship in 2007. He has had exhibitions at numerous international institutions and has taken part in the Venice Biennale with Chile. He lives and works in Madrid.
A monograph showcasing the work and ideas of international architect Patrick Genard, who says “Architecture is the art of creating space, of creating emptiness from fullness, where the process is as important as the result. Architecture must be contextual, but in the broadest possible sense: geographical – from local to universal - historical, cultural...” “A project must leave an ""enriched"" place after its construction. The architect shapes matter as an extension of nature by means of geometry as a link between tangible reality and the world of ideas. Architecture must be aesthetically desirable, constructively reasonable and socially justifiable. Architecture has to function, to respond to needs within economic and social parameters, to use all possible techniques, but never as an end in itself, but as a means to achieve higher goals. Our job as architects is to build exterior spaces so that people can come into contact with their interior space”.

"Patrick's work offers a mesmerising journey around the world in search of the divine, offering a timeless portrait of people living on the fringe, creating life on their own terms." - i-D For more than 25 years, French photographer Patrick Cariou has traveled to far out places around the globe, documenting people living on the fringes of society and making a way for themselves. Whether photographing surfers, gypsies, Rastafarians, or rude boys of Kingston, Cariou celebrates his subjects as they are: peoples of the earth who meet the struggles of life with honor, dignity, and joy. Bringing together works from his groundbreaking monographs including Surfers, Yes Rasta, Trenchtown Love, and Gypsies, Works 1985-2005 takes us on a scenic journey around the world, offering an intimate and captivating look at cultures that distance themselves from the blessings and curses of modernism. Given access to these hermetic realms, Cariou presents a fascinating portrait of resistance in a multiplicity of forms. The landscape plays a vital role in Cariou’s work, revealing how people live shapes their identity and destiny in equal part. Whether following the waves, living in the mountains, or surviving urban and rural poverty, Cariou’s subjects reval the importance of preserving one’s native culture at a time of Western cultural hegemony. The spirit of pride and defiance comes alive in his work; each of the peoples portrayed have found a way to survive despite the brutality facing them and the earth alike.
The aim of this series is to inform both professional philosophers and a larger readership (of social and natural scientists, methodologists, mathematicians, students, teachers, publishers, etc. ) about what is going on, who's who, and who does what in contemporary philosophy and logic. PROFILES is designed to present the research activity and the results of already outstanding personalities and schools and of newly emerging ones in the various fields of philosophy and logic. There are many Festschrift volumes dedicated to various philosophers. There is the celebrated Library of Living Philosophers edited by P. A. Schilpp whose format influenced the present enterprise. Still they can only cover very little of the contemporary philosophical scene. Faced with a tremen dous expansion of philosophical information and with an almost frighten ing division of labor and increasing specialization we need systematic and regular ways of keeping track of what happens in the profession. PRO FILES is intended to perform such a function. Each volume is devoted to one or several philosophers whose views and results are presented and discussed. The profiled philosopher(s) will summarize and review his (their) own work in the main fields of signifi cant contribution. This work will be discussed and evaluated by invited contributors. Relevant historical and/or biographical data, an up-to-date bibliography with short abstracts of the most important works and, whenever possible, references to significant reviews and discussions will also be included.
