How to Make Money as a Real Estate Photographer
My name is Phil, and I am a real estate photographer. I actually began my journey in the real estate industry in the year 2000, right after graduating high school. From being a full-time agent to working on real estate teams, processing short sales, and working as an office administrator, I have been involved in every aspect of real estate. Somehow, I landed in full-time photography, drone operation, and videography. Since I was a child, my love has been for music and anything else that allowed me to be creative. So when I was introduced to the concept of photography as used in real estate in 2010, I was utterly intrigued. That year, I worked as a listing coordinator and glorified receptionist for Coldwell Banker in Tampa, FL. I loved the agents and staff that I worked with, but the pay was bad, and the room for long term growth was limited. Plus, it wasn't fascinating, and I was bored out of my mind. I felt like I was in Groundhog Day with Bill Murray. In fact, I even wrote a song about it (shameless plug - it's on one of my YouTube channels). Looking for a way to supplement my income, I found a job writing real estate descriptions on Fiverr. The person posting the job was also named Phil, and we struck up a relationship immediately. One day I noticed the signature line of his email said, "real estate photographer." I asked him if he could tell me more about that, and...the rest is history. My life changed the day I met Phil. In fact, I dedicate this book to him because he changed my life and has inspired me to do the same for others. I came to the table with a significant amount of experience in this field, but he introduced me to a whole different aspect. Once I realized it existed, it just clicked The knowledge and experience he shared with me have been a gift, almost like a superhero ability. To this day, we remain very close friends. I want to share this gift with as many other people as possible. Since high school, I have always been searching for additional income streams. MLMs were very attractive to me, even selling weird stuff (I did door-to-door sales of knives, for example) - just anything that's kinda out of the box. I am incredibly gullible, too. I'll believe whatever sales pitch is given to me and tell myself, "I can do that " Up until this point, nothing I tried really worked. I've wasted a ton of time and money just trying to find ways to make money. But I am very excited and proud to say that real estate photography worked for me I can also assure you that I came into this with ZERO photography experience. To this day, I will not claim to be a high tech guru or gearhead or extremely knowledgeable about photography's inner workings. I am none of these things. But what I have been taught has given me all the tools needed to succeed in this job. Which leads me to a question...what is success? I think it's something different for everyone. But for me, it meant having a job that I enjoyed, being able to be creative, and the ability to provide for my family. For you, success could look different. But I can confidently say that if you are kind, likable, willing to learn, and have an interest in photography, you can do this It's crazy, but I have met photographers who are not kind, not good at their job, unprofessional, and they still make a living doing this. It is frustrating to run across these individuals because it's easy to see the untapped potential they are unwilling to access. Whether you'd like to work part-time, have a flexible schedule, make good money, carve out your own empire, and put the pedal to the metal, I will go over several available possibilities. Ultimately, the purpose of this book is to illustrate my journey of becoming a real estate photographer, what life is like in this industry, and, hopefully, to help you discover if it's what you want to do - and how to do it. Phil Klay

The debut novel from the National Book Award-winning author of Redeployment This] compact epic of a novel contains perhaps Klay's finest writing yet . . . Using his formidable gifts for scene-setting, meaningful irony and deep human empathy, Klay weaves together a set of stories over the course of nearly three decades . . . Amid raging fires and illness and constitutional crises, Klay's book roars something vital: Never forget about war or the blood and bone and the evil and the reckless idealism of who we all really are. --Los Angeles Times A group of Colombian soldiers prepares to raid a drug lord's safe house on the Venezuelan border. They're watching him with an American-made drone, about to strike using military tactics taught to them by U.S. soldiers who honed their skills to lethal perfection in Iraq. In Missionaries, Phil Klay examines the globalization of violence through the interlocking stories of four characters and the conflicts that define their lives. For Mason, a U.S. Army Special Forces medic, and Lisette, a foreign correspondent, America's long post-9/11 wars in the Middle East exerted a terrible draw that neither is able to shake. Where can such a person go next? All roads lead to Colombia, where the US has partnered with local government to keep predatory narco gangs at bay. Mason, now a liaison to the Colombian military, is ready for the good war, and Lisette is more than ready to cover it. Juan Pablo, a Colombian officer, must juggle managing the Americans' presence and navigating a viper's nest of factions bidding for power. Meanwhile, Abel, a lieutenant in a local militia, has lost almost everything in the seemingly endless carnage of his home province, where the lines between drug cartels, militias, and the state are semi-permeable. Drawing on six years of research in America and Colombia into the effects of the modern way of war on regular people, Klay has written a novel of extraordinary suspense infused with geopolitical sophistication and storytelling instincts that are second to none. Missionaries is a window not only into modern war, but into the individual lives that go on long after the drones have left the skies.
Uncertain Ground: Citizenship in an Age of Endless, Invisible War
From the author of Redeployment and Missionaries, an astonishing fever graph of the effects of twenty years of war in a brutally divided America When Phil Klay left the Marines a decade ago, after serving as an officer in Iraq, he found himself part of the community of veterans who have no choice but to grapple with the meaning of their wartime experiences--for themselves and for the country. American identity has always been bound up in war--from the revolutionary war of our founding, to the civil war that ended slavery, to the two world wars that launched America as a superpower. What did the current wars say about who we are as a country, and how should we respond as citizens? Unlike previous eras of war, few other Americans have had to do any real grappling with the endless, invisible wars of the post-9/11 world at all; in fact, increasingly, few people are even aware they are still going on. It's as if there's a dark star with a strong gravitational force that draws a relatively small number of soldiers and their families into its orbit, while remaining inconspicuous to most other Americans. In the meantime, the consequences of American military action abroad may be out of sight and out of mind, but they are very real indeed. This chasm between military and civilian in American life, and the moral blind spot it has created, is one of the great themes of Uncertain Ground, Phil Klay's powerful series of reckonings in essay form over the past ten years with some of our country's thorniest concerns. In the name of what do we ask young Americans to kill, and to die? In the name of what does this country hang together? As we see at every turn in these pages, those two questions have a great deal to do with one another, and how we answer them will go a long way toward deciding where our troubled country goes from here.
