Since 9/11, despite extensive international efforts against global terrorism, there has been a worrying lack of focus on terrorist activity in Africa. Terrorism in East and West Africa: The Under-focused Dimension addresses this strategic deficit by drawing together and analyzing the various domestic and international counter-terrorist measures that have been carried out in East-West Africa since this infamous attack. In his analysis Dr Ridley emphasizes the need to avoid apportioning blame, preferring instead to conduct a thorough examination of counter-terrorist financing measures in certain African countries, as well as looking at the problems associated with their implementation. In this context, the author explains how Western impositions, guidance, and assistance have compounded the ineffectiveness of such measures. This timely book draws upon the author's experience as a former intelligence analyst, to give an account of terrorism in East and West Africa in the first two decades after the 9/11 attacks. Throughout the book there is a questioning of why there has been, and continues to be, an incorrect strategic approach to this threat. This book explores counter-terrorism measures in East and West Africa from an original perspective and delivers an important resource for scholars of terrorism laws, strategies, and politics.

The ability to formulate and structure delivery teams that take on the holistic project life cycle — from project initiation and business case, through design, construction and effective handover, to fully using or operating a facility — is comprehensively covered.'PROJECTEngineering in Perspective provides a unique look into the career of one of Britain's most widely experienced engineers, Professor Tony Ridley. In this book, David Ridley argues that John Dewey’s theory of collective intelligence provides a unique critical social theory that speaks directly to the present moment. Escaping some of the dead ends of Frankfurt School critical theory, whilst also representing a continuity of the Marxist ‘philosophy of praxis’ tradition, the book reconstructs Dewey’s ‘method of democracy’ to reveal a forgotten alternative to both left-wing pessimism and neoliberal populism. Since the 2007-8 Financial Crisis, neoliberal governments, for example in the UK, have turned to higher education to kick-start a stagnating economy. Marketisation has turned English universities into multi-national corporations and students into consumers. Academics now have no choice, Ridley insists, but to join with the public in the political struggle against ‘third wave neoliberalism’. In the final part of the book, Ridley applies Dewey’s theory of collective intelligence to the reconstruction of UK higher education, concluding with a vision of radical democracy supported by ‘socially useful’ universities and a democratic academic and sociological profession.
