Religions Are Remixes

Religions Are Remixes

This book utilizes an approach that centers on remix theory and conceptual metaphor theory, arguing for an examination of the study of religion via a model for analyzing cultural constructs that the author terms Remix+/-. After discerning the metaphorical correspondences underlying his argument, the author claims that the shift in conceptual and terminological framing remix provides can assist in understanding religious phenomena and developments differently, paying close attention to the sorts of meanings, implications, and assumptions that are disrupted and subverted as a result. The chapters indicate how notions of originality, authenticity, and authority are problematized and challenged from the perspective modeled by Remix+/-, with Buddhist philosophy occupying a significant role in the demonstrative examples. This book will be of interest to remix theorists and conceptual metaphor theorists because it advances a new approach to applying both remix and metaphor to the study of cultural constructs. It will also be valuable for those studying religion and digital culture—especially Buddhist thought and practice—as it proposes a new lens through which religiosity can be defamiliarized and critically analyzed.
Managing Toxic Leaders and Dysfunctional Organizational Dynamics
Understanding experience at work, especially in organizations that have toxic leaders and dysfunctional organizational dynamics, is a multidimensional undertaking that must include in-depth perspectives informed by psychosocial theory. This may be best accomplished by relying on complementary theories to account for what is found and experienced in our organizations and in particular a better understanding of why this is happening. "Why did she do that?" "Why did he say that?" "Why did a group react the way they did?" “Why,” is critical in terms of understanding organizational dynamics. Our lives at work in large complex and multidimensional organizations are saturated with experience, some of which is fulfilling, and some are of a darker nature that arises from the presence of toxic leaders and dysfunctional organizational dynamics. Understanding these toxicities and dysfunctions and their effect on organization members is approached by first raising their awareness at the beginning of the book before providing psychosocially informed insights that form a basis for understanding and organizational change in the following sections. This book explores these work-life dynamics by grounding them in concrete examples and then using complementary psychoanalytically informed perspectives to illuminate their underlying, often unconscious nature filling an important gap in management and organizational literature.

Authority in Crisis in French Literature, 1850–1880
By the 1850s, the expansion of printing and distribution technologies provided writers with more readers and literary outlets than ever before, while the ever-changing political contexts occasioned by the revolutions of 1830 and 1848 brought about differing degrees of political, social, and literary censure and pressure. Seth Whidden examines crises of literary authority in nineteenth-century French literature, both in response to the attempts of the Second Empire (1852-1870) to restore the unquestioned imperial authority that had been established by Napoleon I and in the aftermath of the bloody Paris Commune of 1871. In each of his chapters, Whidden offers a representative case study highlighting one of several phenomena-literary collaboration, parody, destabilized poetic form, the substitution of one poetic or narrative voice with that of the man-that enabled challenges to the traditional status of the writer and, by extension, the political authority that it reflected. Whidden focuses on the play Le Supplice d’une femme (1865); the Cercle Zutiste, a group of writers, musicians, and artists who met regularly in the fall of 1871, only months after the fall of the Second Empire; Arthur Rimbaud’s Commune-era poems; and Jules Verne’s 1851 ’Un voyage en ballon,’ later reprinted as ’Un drame dans les airs’ in 1874. Whidden concludes with a futuristic look at authority and auctority as it pertains to midcentury writers taking stock of the weakened authority still possible in a post-Second Empire France and envisioning what kind of auctority is still to come.

In this timely book, Seth J. Schwartz performs a deep dive into acculturation, the process of adaptation following international migration. Schwartz defines acculturation and explores how interactions between migrants and residents can determine how migrants will adjust to their new environment. Leveraging over 25 years of research into the topic, this book assesses the cultural stressors that many migrants experience in their new homelands. Chapters detail the social and historical background to acculturation and examine how daily processes differ from longer-term progression. Schwartz analyzes the differences between enhancement and crisis migrants, covering the unique challenges that crisis migrants face. He also addresses the impact of acculturation on family relationships, due to the divergence of children adapting more quickly to their surroundings. The book outlines how acculturation can be smooth or stressful, depending on the migrant group and the context, and establishes acculturation as a critical part of migrants’ lives. Understanding Acculturation is an essential resource for scholars and students in migration studies, social and cultural psychology, sociology, and development studies. Practitioners and policymakers in politics and public policy will also benefit from its valuable insights.

One angry young man is about to take a fantasy realm by storm-or by accident-in the hilarious first book of a new series by the author of Good Boy. Gabe Skelter has a temper, which he likes to imagine has the effect of causing people to fear and respect him. On the contrary, his pudgy, underdeveloped body and negative personality make him more your standard outcast teenager. Worse still, he kinda knows what a jerkweed he actually is. Then, in the middle of a class trip, Gabe finds himself spirited away to Regaia: a world of magic, mayhem, and nerd-tastic adventure. Naturally, he's completely ill-prepared. But in this realm, he's a monstrous, muscular man of action. Unfortunately, he's still saddled with the frightfully unimpressive brains of a teenage loser. Now, Gabe must make his burly, bulky way in a land where the strong dominate, the powerful rule, and picking a class has nothing to do with algebra . . . and everything to do with survival. Bristling with reckless abandon and antisocial attitude, Big Sneaky Barbarian is Die Hard with dungeons; a must-read for fans of heavy-hitting action mixed with laugh-out-loud snark-and absolutely loaded with swears. The first volume of the hit LitRPG adventure series-with almost 100,000 views on Royal Road-now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible Praise for Big Sneaky Barbarian"I loved every one of the words in this book Especially how they followed one another in perfect sequence, each of them dazzling me with their sublime poise, vigor, and panache. Stop, what are you doing, don't hit send . . ." -Luke Chmilenko, author of the Ascend Online series and collector of "antique" eggs "This has gotten me very excited at the chance to be one of those authors quoted on a book." -Shirtaloon, author of the He Who Fights with Monsters series and brazen Australian "One of the books of all time I'll never forget when the big barbarian got all sneaky." -Will Wight, author of the Cradle series and cult leader "I don't care how you quote me; just put your pants back on." -Kyle Kirrin, author of the Ripple System series and secret male model

The comic fantasy adventures of Gabe Skelter continue as the former Earthling loser fights his way to gory glory in an RPG made all too real. Not all that long ago, Gabe Skelter was an unimpressive, overweight, snarky teenager with more mouth than muscle and more attitude than attributes. Then, during a deadly trainwreck, he was transported to another reality. On the world of Regaia, Gabe is a different person entirely: a massively jacked-up warrior orc known as Loon. The dud has become a stud. But even in his new buff bod and with his growing collection of skills, Gabe still finds himself in a near-constant fight for survival against a wide variety of horrific creatures. Luckily, he's gathered a small but loyal band of fighters to cover his broad back. And he's going to need them . . . Because the powers that brought Gabe to Regaia have their own plans for him and his former classmates who "died" in the trainwreck-now known as sojourners. Plans that could have drastic consequences not only for Gabe's loved ones but for all Regaia. Plans that will almost certainly get them all killed. Packed with furious combat, nerd-tastic detail, and hilarious wit, Big Sneaky Barbarian 2 is a must-read for fans of high-octane action and nonstop smart-ass fun. The second volume of the hit LitRPG adventure series-with more than 100,000 views on Royal Road-now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible Praise for Big Sneaky Barbarian 2 "Wow . . . you didn't even ask me for a blurb. A zero-turned-hero must battle his way across a perilous landscape of monsters, magic, and mayhem in the third book of a hilarious fantasy-adventure series. In the magical world of Regaia, ultra-yoked orc warrior Loon (formerly loser Earthling Gabe Skelter) has rampaged across the land, gaining perks, skills, awesome powers, and an oddball crew of allies. Now, against all hope, he's found his fellow "sojourners"-classmates of Gabe's who were also transported to this dangerous realm, each taking up their own new forms. Of course, some of them are still major asshats, but that's just the start of Loon's problems. Because not only are the sojourners under constant threat from Regaia's wide assortment of nightmarish creatures, fearsome foes, and bloodthirsty armies of all stripes. They now also face the cold, hard reality of building a solid settlement for themselves before the coming winter. It's a very special treasure called a Prosperity Conduit, a mythical talisman that could boost their small, fragile community into a thriving society and ensure their continued success and achievement. There's only one teensy, tiny problem . . . They'll have to kill a god to get it. Names and locations have been altered for good reason but the simple principles remain. From strip clubs in Virginia to the jungles of Hawaii, truth is often stranger than fiction. From the critically ignored mind of Seth MacKenzie, Life in Randori is a collection of "Essays" detailing events experienced on the road less traveled. Both unorthodox and heartfelt, it pushes the limits while remaining grounded that seamlessly blends drugs, morality, and humor in a way that can only come from direct experience. Equal parts profane and profound, the author embraces his disfunction and craving for chaos in a way that's both relatable and original.
