A young blonde woman, her golden hair illuminated, screams. She is the seventh victim of a serial killer known as "The Venguer", who targets young blonde women on Tuesday evenings in London's 'White Chapel' district. That night, Daisy Olds a blonde model, is at a fashion show when she and the other showgirls hear the news. The blonde girls are horrified; hiding their hair with dark wigs or hats. Daisy laughs at their fears, and returns home to her parents, Jack and Mrs Rosemary Olds, and her policeman sweetheart, Tom; they have been reading about the crime in the newspaper. A handsome young man, bearing a strong resemblance to the description of the murderer, arrives at the house and asks about the room for rent. Rosemary shows him the room, which is decorated with portraits of beautiful young blond women. The man is rather secretive, which puzzles Rosemary. However he willingly pays her a month's rent in advance, and asks only for a little to eat. Rosemary is surprised to see that the lodger is turning all the portraits around to face the wall he politely requests that they be removed. Daisy comes in to remove the portraits, and an attraction begins to form between Daisy and the lodger. The women return downstairs, where they hear the lodger's footsteps as he paces the floor. The relationship between Daisy and the reclusive lodger gradually becomes serious, and Tom, newly assigned to the Venguer case, begins to resent this. The following Tuesday, Rosemary is awoken late at night by the lodger leaving the house. She attempts to search his room, but a small cabinet is locked tight. In the morning, another blonde girl is found dead, just around the corner. The Time: 1958 The Place: London

This volume shows that organised emancipatory politics, in part or mainly reinforced by arms, is still very much alive in a range of postcolonial states. By 'emancipatory politics' we mean political activities that aim to end exploitation and enhance participatory democracy through which leadership can be held to account on a daily as well as periodic basis, in the workplace and beyond. Whether it be India, Nepal, the Philippines, Peru or Columbia, long-standing armed movements aiming to seize and transform state power are still burning and working for a different future. In Euro-American debate it is easy to forget those movements - some of which have a more than forty-year history - of the Maoists in India or Nepal, FARC in Columbia, or the Communist Party of the Philippines. We focus here on movements that are still very much active as well as on movements of Marxist emancipatory change that achieved state power - the Mozambican case of Frelimo and the Sandinistas of Nicaragua - whose experiences shed an important critical light on those that are still in active struggle. These cases have been chosen to illustrate a range of reasons for embarking on and sustaining armed struggle. We show that questions of ideological, political and economic organization strongly influence the specifically military aspects of these movements. Most are adaptations of Mao's Chinese revolutionary movement and its tenets, but some refer to other revolutionary traditions. The selection is not meant to be comprehensive, but to focus on the reasons for and history of movements of this kind, highlighting the limitations that this mobilisation and its ties to Maoist teachings have placed on their emancipatory politics.

The Haunted Hotel the tale of a haunting -- the tale of a crime. The ghost of Lord Montberry haunts the Palace Hotel in Venice ---. Montberry's beautiful-yet-terrifying wife, the Countess Narona, and her erstwhile brother are the center of the terror that fills the Palace Hotel. Are their malefactions at the root of the haunting -- or is there something darker, something much more unknowable at work? With a title like The Haunted Hotel you might be forgiven if you expected this book to be a ghost story. The books does have some dark and nasty scenes, -yes-there is a ghost as well, but The Haunted Hotel is a gothic mystery as well as a ghost story. The story is set in 1960 and the heroine is a lady named Agnes Lockwood, whose fianc ; Herbert Westwick (Lord Montbarry) jilted her for the rather sinister Countess Narona. He died shortly afterwards, under suspicious circumstances, while the couple were on an extended stay in Venice, accompanied by the Countess" equally sinister brother (Baron Rivar). A further mystery surrounds the disappearance of Lord Montbarry's courier (Mr Ferrari). While in Venice Lord Montbarry stayed-and died-in an old, decaying palace. Later in the book the palace is refurbished as a hotel. Lord Montbarry's brother Henry has money invested in the project so, when his nephew gets married, and honeymoons in Europe, it seems only natural that the newlyweds should spend a little time at the new hotel. The rest of the family agree to meet the happy couple in Venice and...

David Barringer is a defence barrister and is congratulating himself on a brilliant performance which has just seen Rick Spectre acquitted of murder. His ego is pricked by Margaret Spectre confessing to him that Spectre was guilty. The man himself boasts of it to Barringer a day or two later. Cue moral crisis and a vow never to defend anyone again unless he is sure of their innocence. Spectre himself then dies and Barringer believes he perjures himself in giving evidence at the inquest. He believes Margaret has killed her husband. Margaret is withdrawn and indifferent towards life, taking advantage of the things money can provide her, but not enjoying them. Barringer feels the stirring of an attraction. We then cross paths with Sir. Phillip Cross, who openly mocks David when he declares war on criminals...."I am not going to be content with a negative position as regards evildoers. I am going to set my heel on as many of the human vermin of this city as I can find." Cross it turns out is-Margaret Spectre's father. After crossing verbal swords (an argument of sorts), Cross prophesises that within a few yards of the bar they are in, later tonight a crime will be committed. As if by magic, a murder occurs and Barringer factoring in Cross's seedy reputation on some quarters.....he's murdered someone abroad, he holds lavish orgies at the walled mansion on the banks of the river.... gets it into his head that Cross is a criminal mastermind. A story of Noir intrigue that travels across Europe in the true spirit of a good mystery. There are shootings, burglaries, romances, escapes from prisons, and intricate conspiracies that may surprise and leave you scratching your head as you try to solve this "whodunit". In the best tradition of a good mystery however, you may need to wait for the final chapters to discover the truth. This is a complex criminal conspiracy set in 1905. The story travels across England, Scotland, Italy, Finland and Russia. While some of it touches on conditions in Czarist Russia before Bloody Sunday, the spying going on has little to do with official espionage. Steve Craft, an Englishman living in Italy and serving as an acting consul, becomes the victim of a hoax when a visiting countryman invites him for dinner on a luxurious yacht. On board, he finds the photo of a lovely young woman, torn in pieces. Then he returns to shore to find the consulate's safe burgled. The yacht, meanwhile, has set sail for parts unknown. Later, Craft meets the yachtsman in Scotland under a different name, and finds out the young woman of the photo holds a deadly secret, to both her and his own peril. The mystery holds to the very end, Time: 1905 Place: Russia, at sea and beyond
