Serving the wealthy and powerful is not for the faint of heart nor enthusiastically uneducated-it requires know-how developed over a millennium by the very people-British butlers-who have looked after the personal lives of the most discerning and demanding of individuals. In the really old days, failure could result in death; today, it merely results in firing. Yet there is no need for either, as there are right ways to conduct oneself and engage with employers, their families, and guests; and right ways to look after their prized possessions and beautiful properties.Whether looking back at the traditional world that helps define the butler; or analyzing the fast-changing world that offers its challenges to butlers in real time; or anticipating the future for our profession-a world populated by technology, including robots-and how best to prepare for it, this first of a two-volume series provides a voice in the ear of the thinking professional and a measure of stability for those entering the profession. The know-how presented has been brought together and updated for the 21st Century butler and household or estate(s) managers, and is furthermore equally applicable: a) to any private individual wishing to introduce or maintain high standards in their person life; andb) to any service industry where superior service is expected and appreciated by clients, consumers, patients, et al, and is, in fact, vital to the success of any company and its bottom line.931 definitions are provided as footnotes and in a glossary to smooth the way for readers. The 125 color photographs and 785 pages of know-how gleaned over more than a quarter of a century of work in service, up close and personal, to the wealthy, as well as over six decades of living and learning, add up to a tome that is a must-have for any professional's library. For it not only provides an overview of this unique style of service and the expectations of others, but also the tools to succeed. In addition, the reader will have access to the author, who is Chairman of the International Institute of Modern Butlers, for advice on any service-related questions or difficulties.Volume I is the updated edition of the best selling book, "Butlers and Household Managers, 21st Century Professionals" and together with Volume II, comprises the first and only comprehensive work on the service skills that have made butlers a household name (pun incidental) and the envy of anyone wishing to provide superior service.

Cocaine

pokkari
Sports heroes, executives, and the homeless—cocaine permeates every inch of our society, with tragic results. Although casual use of cocaine has clearly declined, the number of daily users, in particular those using crack, continues to climb. Why do people continue to use cocaine? What is its appeal? How does it affect the body and mind? What can a person do if a family member or friend is using cocaine? In the past decade, the introduction of "crack" has increased the popularity of cocaine. Treatments have changed to adapt to this new, cheaper, more widely available drug. This Second Edition of Cocaine—by three noted psychiatrists from Harvard University and the University of Utah—highlights the tremendous research effort that has been mounted to discover the most effective way to help cocaine-dependent patients. It covers what cocaine is, the different methods of its use, its effects on the brain and other organs, and its psychological and social consequences for users and those around them—both at home and in the workplace. This book also covers cocaine addiction—how it happens, who is at risk, how to treat it, and how to find help. Cocaine includes a list of commonly asked questions about the drug and a self-test to determine if you or someone you love is dependent on cocaine.
Strategic Management of Healthcare Organizations

Strategic Management of Healthcare Organizations

Business Expert Press
2014
nidottu
Perhaps no industry today faces greater challenges than healthcare, and industry professionals are seeking novel solutions to the problems they encounter every day. Unfortunately, much of the conventional wisdom in business is based on theories developed in manufacturing organizations; however, running a healthcare organization like a factory can lead to dissatisfaction of some of the firm's most important stakeholders, including patients, managers, and employees, and it may even lead to inefficiency! Stakeholder theory offers an alternative approach that directly addresses these and other problems in healthcare organizations. It is based on developing trusting and productive relationships with stakeholders that lead to high levels of value creation, as indicated by stakeholder satisfaction, innovation, efficiency, and growth. This practical book includes state-of-the art thinking on stakeholder theory and strategic management to encourage a broader and more enlightened view of management. It outlines a process that is applicable to all levels of a healthcare organization, including evaluation of trends in the external environment that need to be addressed, analysis of internal resources, generation and selection of innovative solutions to the problems a firm is facing, and development of an action plan and control system to ensure that solutions are implemented and successfully address the most pressing issues.

Happy has lived at the Bronx Zoo for most of her 48 years, and for more than a decade has remained largely isolated and lonely. Like all elephants, Happy has a complex mind and a deep social, intellectual, and emotional life; she desires to make choices and has a sense of self-recognition. But like all non-human animals, Happy is considered a thing in the eye of the law, with no fundamental rights. Due to a series of ground-breaking legal cases, however, this is beginning to change, and Happy’s liberation is at the forefront. A vibrant and personal graphic novel, Thing: Inside the Struggle for Animal Personhood traces this moving story and makes the legal and scientific case for animal personhood. Led by lawyer Steven M. Wise and aided by some of the world’s most respected animal behaviour and cognition scientists, the Nonhuman Rights Project has filed cases on behalf of non-human animals like Happy since 2013. Through this work, they have forced courts to consider the evidence of their clients’ cognitive abilities and their legal arguments for personhood, opening the door for similar cases worldwide. In Thing, comic artists Sam Machado and Cynthia Sousa Machado bring together Wise’s ground-breaking work and their powerful illustrations in the first graphic nonfiction book about the animal personhood movement. Beginning with Happy’s story and the central ideas behind animal rights, Thing then turns to the scientists that are revolutionising our understanding of the minds of non-human animals such as great apes, elephants, dolphins, and whales. As we learn more about these creatures’ inner lives and autonomy, the need for the greater protections provided by legal rights becomes ever more urgent. With cases like Happy’s growing in number and spanning from Argentina to India, nations around the world are beginning to recognise the rights of animals. Combining legal and social history, innovative science, and illustrated storytelling, Thing presents a visionary new way of relating to the nonhuman world.

A Time-Release History of the Opioid Epidemic

A Time-Release History of the Opioid Epidemic

J.N. Campbell; Steven M. Rooney

Springer International Publishing AG
2018
nidottu
This Brief takes the reader on a chemical journey by following the history for over two centuries of how an opiate became an opioid, thus spawning an empire and a series of crises. These imperfect resemblances of alkaloids are both natural and synthetic substances that, particularly in America, are continually part of a growing concern about overuse. This seemed an inviting prospect for those in pain, but as the ubiquitous media coverage continues to lay bare, the levels of abuse point to the fact that perhaps an epidemic is upon us, if not a culture war. Seeking answers to how and why this addiction crisis transpired over two hundred years of long development, this Brief examines the role that the chemistry laboratory played in turning patients into consumers. By utilizing a host of diverse sources, this Brief seeks to trace the design and the production of opioids and their antecedents over the past two centuries. From the isolation and development of the first alkaloids with morphine that relieved pain within the home and on the battlefield, to the widespread use of nostrums and the addiction crisis that ensued, to the dissemination of drugs by what became known as Big Pharma after the World Wars; and finally, to competition from home-made pharmaceuticals, the progenitor was always, in some form, a type of chemistry lab. At times, the laboratory pressed science to think deeply about society's maladies, such as curing disease and alleviating pain, in order to look for new opportunities in the name of progress. Despite the best intentions opioids have created a paradox of pain as they were manipulated by creating relief with synthetic precision and influencing a dystopian vision. Thus, influence came in many forms, from governments, from the medical community, and from the entrepreneurial aspirations of the general populace. For better, but mostly for worse, all played a role in changing forever the trajectory of what started with the isolation of a compound in Germany. Combining chemistry and history in a rousing new long-form narrative that even broadens the definition of a laboratory, the origins and future of this complicated topic are carefully examined.
Helping Couples on the Brink of Divorce

Helping Couples on the Brink of Divorce

William J. Doherty; Steven M. Harris

AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION
2026
pokkari
This second edition offers a session-by-session guide to discernment counseling, a specialized five-session intervention to help couples leaning different ways about divorce or separation find the best path forward for their troubled relationships. The authors have added new case examples that reflect different kinds of couples, as well as an additional chapter demonstrating the entire discernment counseling protocol in action. Updated scholarship and insights for learning to become a discernment counselor have also been included. Unlike traditional couples therapy, the goal of discernment counseling isn’t to help the couple heal their relationship but rather to gain clarity and confidence about a direction for their relationship in terms of three potential paths: maintaining the status quo, getting divorced/separated, or entering couples therapy. Typically, one partner or spouse is invested in saving the relationship (leaning in) while the other is not (leaning out), so this book explores how to navigate these differing agendas and offers clinicians tools for interacting with both partners. It walks through the process of working with the couple together and with each partner individually, helping them to recognize their contributions to the relationship’s problems and clarify what they would work on if they embark on couples therapy. Common challenges in discernment counseling are also explored, such as when neither partner is leaning in, when one partner is having an affair, and when there is lack of love or passion.

Stratigraphic Paleobiology – Understanding the Distribution of Fossil Taxa in Time and Space

Mark E. Patzkowsky; Steven Holland; Steven M. Holland

University of Chicago Press
2012

Whether the fossil record should be read at face value or whether it presents a distorted view of the history of life is an argument seemingly as old as many fossils themselves. In the late 1700s, Georges Cuvier argued for a literal interpretation, but in the early 1800s, Charles Lyell's gradualist view of the earth's history required a more nuanced interpretation of that same record. To this day, the tension between literal and interpretive readings lies at the heart of paleontological research, influencing the way scientists view extinction patterns and their causes, eco-system persistence and turnover, and the pattern of morphologic change and mode of speciation. With "Stratigraphic Paleobiology", Mark E. Patzkowsky and Steven M. Holland present a critical framework for assessing the fossil record, one based on a modern understanding of the principles of sediment accumulation. Patzkowsky and Holland argue that the distribution of fossil taxa in time and space is controlled not only by processes of ecology, evolution, and environmental change, but also by the stratigraphic processes that govern where and when sediment that might contain fossils is deposited and preserved. The authors explore the exciting possibilities of stratigraphic paleobiology, and along the way demonstrate its great potential to answer some of the most critical questions about the history of life.

pokkari
Companion to the acclaimed PBS American Experience documentary.Winner of the CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title of the Choice ACRLThe Amish have always struggled with the modern world. Known for their simple clothing, plain lifestyle, and horse-and-buggy mode of transportation, Amish communities continually face outside pressures to modify their cultural patterns, social organization, and religious world view. An intimate portrait of Amish life, The Amish explores not only the emerging diversity and evolving identities within this distinctive American ethnic community, but also its transformation and geographic expansion.Donald B. Kraybill, Karen M. Johnson-Weiner, and Steven M. Nolt spent twenty-five years researching Amish history, religion, and culture. Drawing on archival material, direct observations, and oral history, the authors provide an authoritative and sensitive understanding of Amish society. Amish people do not evangelize, yet their numbers in North America have grown from a small community of some 6,000 people in the early 1900s to a thriving population of more than 320,000 today. The largest populations are found in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Indiana, with additional communities in twenty-eight other states and three Canadian provinces. The authors argue that the intensely private and insular Amish have devised creative ways to negotiate with modernity that have enabled them to thrive in America. The transformation of the Amish in the American imagination from “backward bumpkins” to media icons poses provocative questions. What does the Amish story reveal about the American character, popular culture, and mainstream values? Richly illustrated, The Amish is the definitive portrayal of the Amish in America in the twenty-first century.

The Meaning of Life is the preeminent anthology on the topic. Featuring twenty-five insightful selections by prominent philosophers, it serves as an ideal core text for courses on the meaning of life and introduction to philosophy courses where the topic is emphasized. In Part I the articles defend the view that without faith in God, life has no meaning or purpose. In Part II the selections oppose this claim, defending instead a nontheistic, humanistic alternative—that life can have meaning even in the absence of theistic commitment. In Part III the readings address whether the question of the meaning of life is itself meaningful. A new Part IV on the end of life raises issues about how understanding death affects our understanding of the meaning of life.

They describe novel experimental methods for studying creative cognitive processes under controlled laboratory conditions, along with techniques that can be used to generate many different types of inventions and concepts. Unlike traditional approaches, Creative Cognition considers creativity as a product of numerous cognitive processes, each of which helps to set the stage for insight and discovery. It identifies many of these processes as well as general principles of creative cognition that can be applied across a variety of different domains, with examples in artificial intelligence, engineering design, product development, architecture, education, and the visual arts.Following a summary of previous approaches to creativity, the authors present a theoretical model of the creative process. They review research involving an innovative imagery recombination technique, developed by Finke, that clearly demonstrates that creative inventions can be induced in the laboratory. They then describe experiments in category learning that support the provocative claim that the factors constraining category formation similarly constrain imagination and illustrate the role of various memory processes and other strategies in creative problem solving.
