This vintage book contains Edgar Allen Poe's 1843 short story, "The Tell-Tale Heart". An anonymous narrator recounts a murder that he has committed, detailing how he carefully dismembered the body and concealed it underneath the floorboards. His endeavours, however, are threatened when his guilt and insanity take on the form of a hallucination that the victim's heart is still beating from beneath the floor. Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an American author, editor, poet, and critic. Most famous for his stories of mystery and horror, he was one of the first American short story writers, and is widely considered to be the inventor of the detective fiction genre. Many antiquarian books such as this are becoming increasingly rare and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

Edgar Allan Poe arrived in Charleston in November 1827 chased by storms, both literal and figurative. Some of the author's previous indiscretions caused him to enlist in the U.S. Army six months earlier under the pseudonym Edgar A. Perry. The more than one year that Poe spent stationed at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island has been shrouded in mystery for nearly two centuries because Poe deliberately tried to hide his stint in the army. But despite Poe's deceptions, the influences and impressions of the Lowcountry permeated his life and writing, providing the setting for Poe's most popular and widely read short story during his lifetime, "The Gold-Bug," and perhaps providing the inspiration for the real Annabel Lee. Author Christopher Byrd Downey details the hidden history of Poe in Charleston.
Author Christopher P. Semtner takes readers inside the homes of Edgar Allan Poe. Edgar Allan Poe's terror tales and melancholy poetry carved a bold new path across literary genres. Meet the man behind the madness, murder and mayhem on this road trip to Poe's homes in Richmond, Baltimore, Philadelphia, the Bronx and more. Along the way, meet the grave robbers, murderers and tooth thieves who inspired his greatest horror stories. Learn the secret histories of these Poe places to find out which was owned by a man who kept Poe's wife's bones in a box under his bed, which might be haunted by Poe's ghost, which has the best basement for hiding corpses and which stood across the street from an anatomy lab.
