Process Engineering and Design Using Visual Basic
Software tools are a great aid to process engineers, but too much dependence on such tools can often lead to inappropriate and suboptimal designs. Reliance on software is also a hindrance without a firm understanding of the principles underlying its operation, since users are still responsible for devising the design. In Process Engineering and Design Using Visual Basic, Arun K. Datta provides a unique and versatile suite of programs along with simultaneous development of the underlying concepts, principles, and mathematics. Each chapter details the theory and techniques that provide the basis for design and engineering software and then showcases the development and utility of programs developed using the material outlined in the chapter. This all-inclusive guide works systematically from basic mathematics to fluid mechanics, separators, overpressure protection, and glycol dehydration, providing basic design guidelines based on international codes. Worked examples demonstrate the utility of each program, while the author also explains problems and limitations associated with the simulations. After reading this book you will be able to immediately put these programs into action and have total confidence in the result, regardless of your level of experience. Companion Visual Basic and Excel files are available for download on under the "Downloads/Updates" tab on this web page.

Master Techniques and Successfully Build Models Using a Single ResourceVital to all data-driven or measurement-based process operations, system identification is an interface that is based on observational science, and centers on developing mathematical models from observed data. Principles of System Identification: Theory and Practice is an introductory-level book that presents the basic foundations and underlying methods relevant to system identification. The overall scope of the book focuses on system identification with an emphasis on practice, and concentrates most specifically on discrete-time linear system identification.Useful for Both Theory and PracticeThe book presents the foundational pillars of identification, namely, the theory of discrete-time LTI systems, the basics of signal processing, the theory of random processes, and estimation theory. It explains the core theoretical concepts of building (linear) dynamic models from experimental data, as well as the experimental and practical aspects of identification. The author offers glimpses of modern developments in this area, and provides numerical and simulation-based examples, case studies, end-of-chapter problems, and other ample references to code for illustration and training.Comprising 26 chapters, and ideal for coursework and self-study, this extensive text: Provides the essential concepts of identificationLays down the foundations of mathematical descriptions of systems, random processes, and estimation in the context of identificationDiscusses the theory pertaining to non-parametric and parametric models for deterministic-plus-stochastic LTI systems in detailDemonstrates the concepts and methods of identification on different case-studiesPresents a gradual development of state-space identification and grey-box modelingOffers an overview of advanced topics of identification namely the linear time-varying (LTV), non-linear, and closed-loop identificationDiscusses a multivariable approach to identification using the iterative principal component analysisEmbeds MATLAB® codes for illustrated examples in the text at the respective points Principles of System Identification: Theory and Practice presents a formal base in LTI deterministic and stochastic systems modeling and estimation theory; it is a one-stop reference for introductory to moderately advanced courses on system identification, as well as introductory courses on stochastic signal processing or time-series analysis. The MATLAB scripts and SIMULINK models used as examples and case studies in the book are also available on the author's website: http://arunkt.wix.com/homepage#!textbook/c397

Ideal for college students in intermediate finance courses, this book uniquely applies mathematical formulas to teach the underpinnings of financial and lending decisions, covering common applications in real estate, capital budgeting, and commercial loans. An updated and expanded version of the time-honored classic text on financial math, this book provides, in one place, a complete and practical treatment of the four primary venues for finance: commercial lending, financial formulas, mortgage lending, and resource allocation or capital budgeting techniques. With an emphasis on understanding the principles involved rather than blind reliance on formulas, the book provides rigorous and thorough explanations of the mathematical calculations used in determining the time value of money, valuation of loans by commercial banks, valuation of mortgages, and the cost of capital and capital budgeting techniques for single as well as mutually exclusive projects. This new edition devotes an entire chapter to a method of evaluating mutually exclusive projects without resorting to any imposed conditions. Two chapters not found in the previous edition address special topics in finance, including a novel and innovative way to approach amortization tables and the time value of money for cash flows when they increase geometrically or arithmetically. This new edition also features helpful how-to sections on Excel applications at the end of each appropriate chapter.
Space After Deleuze

Deleuze’s fondness for geography has long been recognised as central to his thought. This is the first book to introduce researchers to the breadth of his engagements with space, place and movement. Focusing on pressing global issues such as urbanization, war, migration, and climate change, Arun Saldanha presents a detailed Deleuzian rejoinder to a number of theoretical and political questions about globalization in a variety of disciplines. This systematic overview of moments in Deleuze’s corpus where space is implicitly or explicitly theorized shows why he can be called the twentieth century’s most interesting thinker of space. Anyone with an interest in refining such concepts as territory, assemblage, body, event and Anthropocene will learn much from the “geophilosophy” which Deleuze and Guattari proposed for our critical times.

By systematically uncovering and comprehensively examining the epistemological implications of Heidegger's history of being and Foucault's archaeology of discursive formations, Towards an Epistemology of Ruptures shows how Heidegger and Foucault significantly expand the notions of knowledge and thought. This is done by tracing their path-breaking responses to the question: What is the object of thought? The book shows how for both thinkers thought is not just the act by which the object is represented in an idea, and knowledge not just a state of the mind of the individual subject corresponding to the object. Each thinker, in his own way, argues that thought is a productive event in which the subject and the object gain their respective identity and knowledge is the opening up of a space in which the subject and object can encounter each other and in which true and false statements about an object become possible. They thereby lay the ground for a new conceptual framework for rethinking the very relationship between knowledge and its object.

Foodborne Microbial Pathogens

Foodborne Microbial Pathogens

Ever since my days in veterinary school, I was fascinated with the field of microbiology. I always wondered how such a small microscopic organisms are capable of causing infections in other living organisms; big or small, young or old, and healthy or immunocompromised. The subject captured my imagi- tion. Many of the same microorganisms that cause diseases in animals also infect humans. In recent days, pathogens of animal origin impose even greater concern with increasing threat of avian influenza to cause pandemic, and spread of deadly bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow disease) and many bacterial pathogens such as Listeria, E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella, Yersinia, and Campylobacter. I am especially intrigued by the cunning strategy pat- gens employ for their survival in a host and their exploitation of host cellular machinery to promote their own invasion into the host. Pathogenic mechanism is complex and unraveling that process requires great minds. Today, mic- biologists, cell biologists, and immunologists employing many sophisticated molecular tools are unraveling that secret at a very fast pace. Thus it requires a great deal of efforts to compile and update information in a textbook and it was rather a monumental task. My goal with this book was to paint a bigger picture of pathogenic mechanism of foodborne pathogens, which are responsible for many of modern day outbreaks, and diseases worldwide, and narrate the subject with easy to comprehend illustrations.

An Introduction to Hybrid Dynamical Systems

An Introduction to Hybrid Dynamical Systems

Arjan J. van der Schaft; Hans Schumacher

Springer London Ltd

nidottu
This book is about dynamical systems that are "hybrid" in the sense that they contain both continuous and discrete state variables. Recently there has been increased research interest in the study of the interaction between discrete and continuous dynamics. The present volume provides a first attempt in book form to bring together concepts and methods dealing with hybrid systems from various areas, and to look at these from a unified perspective. The authors have chosen a mode of exposition that is largely based on illustrative examples rather than on the abstract theorem-proof format because the systematic study of hybrid systems is still in its infancy. The examples are taken from many different application areas, ranging from power converters to communication protocols and from chaos to mathematical finance.Subjects covered include the following: definition of hybrid systems; description formats; existence and uniqueness of solutions; special subclasses (variable-structure systems, complementarity systems); reachability and verification; stability and stabilizability; control design methods. The book will be of interest to scientists from a wide range of disciplines including: computer science, control theory, dynamical system theory, systems modeling and simulation, and operations research.
