I den lilla byn Grez i Frankrike fanns i slutet av 1800-talet en konstnärskoloni där många svenska konstnärer samlades. Där var Carl Larsson, Karin, Bergöö, Eva Bonnier och många fler. Där träffade Carolina Bennedicks sin kanadensiske make William Blair Bruce. Deras livslånga kärlek förde dem till olika platser innan de så småningom byggde sig ett hem på Gotland. Hemmet, Brucebo, fylldes av konst, vänner och djur. Konsten var deras gemensamma passion men Carolina, som var en modern kvinna för sin tid, hade också ett glödande engagemang för rättvisa och jämställdhet. Hon var bland annat drivande i frågan om kvinnlig rösträtt. Heartists är skriven av konstvetaren Johanna Pietikäinen som under flera års tid studerat parets konst, brev och almanackor. I boken beskriver hon deras liv och samtid. Det är en vacker, stark och stundvis hjärtknipande berättelse. Boken är mycket rikt illustrerad med konst och fotografier.
Fru Ester Bruce (1893) är en äktenskaps- och skilsmässohistoria, där Ester bär på en djup sorg efter sitt tidigare olyckliga äktenskap. Hon har även blivit smutskastad av omgivningen och tvingats leva flera år i exil. Slutligen återvänder hon hem. Hennes före detta make, en bildkonstnär vid namn Ödman, är en av Hanssons många smädebilder av den vid den här tiden forne vännen August Strindberg. Fru Ester Bruce är även i mycket en roman om Skåne. Hansson levde vid den här tiden i exil i Tyskland, efter att hans Sensitiva amorosa (1887) givit upphov till en skandal och blivit nedsablad av svenska kritiker. Han längtade efter att återvända till hembygden.
