'C.S. Lewis: A Biography of Friendship' is a fascinating and insightful plunge into the life of a literary legend through the friends he keep closest. Through collecting previously unpublished research, interviews and insider knowledge, Colin Duriez has compiled a sparkling biography of C.S. Lewis by studying his closest friends, family and the famous literary society, the Inklings. These key relationships helped to influence his academic thoughts, his personal beliefs and his world-renowned books. So what can we learn from these people? - What kind of impact did his life-long friend, Arthur Greeves, have on the legend? - How influential were J.R.R. Tolkien and the other members of the 'Inklings' on his career and life? - Why did he move in with a single mother twice his age, Janie Moore, and live with her until her death? - Why did he marry so late? - What about his alcoholic and gifted brother? This wonderfully produced book offers a striking and tangible image of the Oxford professor, children's author and out-spoken Christian. It's a joy to read and an ideal gift to Lewis fanatics.

The works of C.S. Lewis have a wide appeal to a variety of audiences. Lewis is probably most famous for the best-selling The Chronicles of Narnia, although William Nicholson’s Shadowlands will have led many readers to Lewis’s own account of his tragic bereavement in A Grief Observed. However, Shadowlands represents only a small part of Lewis’s controversial life, and omits much that is crucial to an understanding of this fascinating, and in some ways tormented, personality. Lewis enjoyed (to the chagrin of his academic colleagues) a tremendous success as a popular theologian. He was also a successful science fiction writer. And last, but by no means least, he was a brilliant and original academic in the field of English Studies. This book weaves together the very different elements in the complex phenomenon of C.S Lewis, and relates the central concerns of Lewis’s life and work to current thinking about postmodernism, psychoanalysis and the idea of ‘a new Humanism’.
The Collected Short Fiction of C.J. Cherryh
All of C.J. Cherryh's award-winning short fiction, collected in one volume for the first time... "It's rare that I'm not working on a novel. Short stories often happen between novels. Consequently my output is fairly small. But I love the tale-telling concept, the notion that I can spin a yarn, rather than construct something architectural and precise." So writes triple Hugo Award-winning author C.J. Cherryh in the introduction to this book, the first comprehensive collection of her independent short fiction. For though Cherryh is primarily known for her novels, it's clear both from the more than two dozen brilliant and varied stories collected here, as well as her commentaries about them, that she loves the short forms and truly enjoys her forays into them. We welcome you to join the realms of C. J. Cherryh's imagination, where you'll visit: "Cassandra"--the Hugo Award-winning tale of a woman cursed with a unique, prophetic madness. "Threads of Time"--an unforgettable reminder that when you play tricks in time, Time itself may play the greatest trick on you. Sunfall--in which six mighty Earth cities laden with the grandeur of history confront their fates in the far future light of our own dying sun. And many other magical, alien, and future worlds, in a volume that incorporates all C. J. Cherryh's previous, long-unavailable collections, individual short stories that have never been compiled before, and a never-before-published novella written specifically for this book. Board this spaceship where your tour guide is one of the most gifted and brilliant science fiction and fantasy writers, and embark on a journey fueled by the imagination of the incomparable C. J. Cherryh.

The Lockheed C-141 Starlifter was a new-build design by Lockheed and proved adaptable to many roles, from carrying outsized cargo to dropping paratroops. The C-141 was used in difficult environmental conditions, such as the heat and extreme humidity of Vietnam, the deserts of the Middle East, and the frozen ice pack of Antarctica. Modification programs enabled the C-141 to make full use of its capabilities, by adding in-flight refueling plus extending the length of the fuselage. The plane was a valued and appreciated USAF asset in numerous missions, from disaster aid and humanitarian relief to doing their part in Operation Desert Shield/Storm, and in the war on terror. The aircraft were eventually retired en masse in 2006 simply as a result of wear and tear. This book covers in detail all aspects such as interior/exterior configurations, cargo capabilities, missions, and modifications made throughout its service life.

A concise illustrated guide to the famous "Gooney Bird," one of the most beloved American aircraft of the Second World War The Douglas C-47 Skytrain and its near twin, the C-53 Skytrooper, formed the backbone of American airborne transport during WWII. In addition to hauling cargo, these aircraft also delivered paratroopers to the front, including for the Normandy invasion. Derived from the Douglas DC-3, the C-47 saw service with US and Allied militaries in Korea and even Vietnam, including notably the heavily armed AC-47D gunship. This volume explores the development and use of the aircraft, as well as details of its construction. The Skytrain was indispensable to the American war effort; more than 10,000 were built and many are still flying today. The planes are also on display at museums on every continent aside from Antarctica, making the plan very relatable and accessible for readers all over the world. Readers will enjoy nearly 300 images of the C-47 and its variants, including the C-53 and AC-47D.
