Cattle Behaviour and Welfare

Cattle Behaviour and Welfare

Clive Phillips

JOHN WILEY AND SONS LTD
2002
nidottu
Cattle are one of our major domesticated animals, a higher mammal with complex mental and physical needs. The benefit of a knowledge of cattle behaviour means veterinarians and stockpeople can recognise abnormal behaviour signs for disease diagnosis and indication of an inadequate environment. This book replaces the book Cattle Behaviour, written by the same author and published by Farming Press in 1993. The text has been revised and updated and four new chapters on cattle welfare have been added. The main interest of many reading a book on behaviour is its relation to the welfare of the species, so the combination of welfare and behaviour is a logical one.

Most businesses, even some of the world's biggest, aren't deliberately designed but instead evolve out of an entrepreneurial idea, which is further tweaked over time - what I call an organic business. Most of us try to get by with such businesses - in Australia that's called "She'll be right", in other words whatever is wrong with the business will correct itself in time. That's not necessarily a bad thing, and it works out for some of us. But a little design goes a long way.In this book, we're going to explore how to deliberately design and build your best business for growth in the first five steps of our Design for Growth coaching model and how to design your best life in the sixth and final(-ish) step. "-ish"? In our approach you don't stop tinkering with your business or your work-life. You always be fine tuning both. We're going to look at how to unpack your business on both the revenue and cost sides of your model. We'll look at how to identify the political, economic, social and technological trends that are driving your businesses present and future. Competitive intelligence is all about building your awareness of where your business sits in the markets and segments that you operate in. We'll then look at how you evaluate your position. Based on that evaluation we look at how you can redesign your business for growth by manipulating the building blocks that comprise your revenue streams and cost structure. With the remodelling started, we then look at how you can best manage your personal cash, assets, and life in general to better integrate work with life.

In 2008 a family's dreams were truly shattered by ConnectEast who failed to build the EastLink toll road as it had been planned to perfection by VicRoads. ConnectEast, a fortuitously named company which has never ever been involved with any major road project such as EastLink; was created in 1999 by Macquarie Bank four years before EastLink was announced. Was that brilliant foresight or insider knowledge? Macquarie Bank raised more than billion dollars in 2004 for ConnectEast with a dishonest Product Disclosure Statement.Has anyone ever before written a book that roasts the Victorian Supreme and Appeal Courts, and the High Court of Australia; backed up with the facts to reveal a never disputed miscarriage of Justice? Getting the book published was much more complicated than I imagined. I submitted the first few pages of a couple of chapters which named names to some publishers. Any feedback I got advised it should be edited. After being passed over by a few editors, one was brutally honest. He told me no publisher or editor will ever put their name in the book "As Is" without major re writes because of potential legal actions.Obviously, this meant any publisher who read chapters where I named two High Court Judges as evasively obstructing due process and perverting the course of Justice; would tell me to get lost.Repeatedly naming the Judges in mass media has not led to me being charged with either libel, slander or defamation. The book reveals the unethical evasiveness of Victorian Courts and the High Court of Australia which all failed to answer one simple legal question in defiance of an established High Court ruling and the United Nations Rule of Law. The story exposes the outright lies told by VicRoads, the Southern and Eastern Integrated Transport Authority (SEITA) and the immoral unethical manipulative denial of Freedom of Information by the Ombudsman and OVIC to protect their own or other Government Departments.Every EastLink toll payer is now contributing to profits completely produced in Victoria to be paid overseas, including China and Korea, until the year 2043. And possibly longer. There may be a way to stop this.

Life Blood and Love opens up many aspects of the Christian life. Clive Brook takes us for a walk with Jesus to Emmaus, and into the field with sheep and their shepherd. He shares insights into subjects preachers don't often look at such as Hell and Judas Iscariot. He reflects on how Pilate was placed between a rock and a hard place by the belligerent Sanhedrin.Clive sees clearly how Jesus defeats the challenges the devil throws at us. He rejoices in the tender love Jesus shares with his Dad and the tremendous power they put into the creation of the universe. Clive ponders how God is flexible and loves all churches, in spite of their different doctrines. He reflects on the dilemma that Philemon had with Onesimus.Clive tells it as it is - that can upset secular humanists when he calls their self-centred lies for what they are. He delights in the covenant with God that Jesus gave us. He tells us how love flows in blood and gives life.He challenges the complacent easy-going Christianity that often pervades the church. Clive shares the joy people feel when touched by Jesus' healing Spirit.

Freewill is seen by some as a human being's greatest asset. People make choices from the top level government to business leaders and right down to liberated teens and even toddlers. The power to choose can turn a person's or nation's destiny, but in perpetuity God holds the key.

Release: Integrating Personal and Professional Performance in a Life Unleashed
For most people in the Western World life is relatively good but work less so. People fall into one of four work-life styles: surviving, cruising, existing or thriving. Many of those living in the first three aspire to live in the last. They want to thrive and get more out of life. Maing the move to a Life Unleashed is what this book, the second in a series of three, is about. Building on Breakthrough: Foundations of a Life Unleashed, in this book Clive takes a look at people's physiological performance, psychological performance, relationships and physical environment. He then turns to look at people's professional positioning, competences and the returns they get on their investment in their positioning and competences. The book finishes with a consideration of how to resolve friction and tension between different spheres of our lives, looking to promote integration between work and wider life. Release draws on Clive's deep personal experiences in work and life. He combines these with cutting edge thinking in leadership, management, business strategy and operations, wellness and psychology, coupled to large doses of common sense and a highly developed sense of the improtance of accountability. The work is shot through with examples and poses questions to enable readers to continue their journey.

Do Animals Think?

Do Animals Think?

Clive D. L. Wynne

Does your dog know when you've had a bad day? Can your cat tell that the coffee pot you left on might start a fire? Could a chimpanzee be trained to program your computer? In this provocative book, noted animal expert Clive Wynne debunks some commonly held notions about our furry friends. It may be romantic to ascribe human qualities to critters, he argues, but it's not very realistic. While animals are by no means dumb, they don't think the same way we do. Contrary to what many popular television shows would have us believe, animals have neither the "theory-of-mind" capabilities that humans have (that is, they are not conscious of what others are thinking) nor the capacity for higher-level reasoning. So, in Wynne's view, when Fido greets your arrival by nudging your leg, he's more apt to be asking for dinner than commiserating with your job stress. That's not to say that animals don't possess remarkable abilities--and Do Animals Think? explores countless examples: there's the honeybee, which not only remembers where it found food but communicates this information to its hivemates through an elaborate dance. And how about the sonar-guided bat, which locates flying insects in the dark of night and devours lunch on the wing? Engagingly written, Do Animals Think? takes aim at the work of such renowned animal rights advocates as Peter Singer and Jane Goodall for falsely humanizing animals. Far from impoverishing our view of the animal kingdom, however, it underscores how the world is richer for having such a diversity of minds--be they of the animal or human variety.

The important data of economics are in the form of time series; therefore, the statistical methods used will have to be those designed for time series data. New methods for analyzing series containing no trends have been developed by communication engineering, and much recent research has been devoted to adapting and extending these methods so that they will be suitable for use with economic series. This book presents the important results of this research and further advances the application of the recently developed Theory of Spectra to economics. In particular, Professor Hatanaka demonstrates the new technique in treating two problems-business cycle indicators, and the acceleration principle existing in department store data. Originally published in 1964. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Ideology and Revolution in Southeast Asia 1900-75
The concept of 'Asian Values' has recently been emphasized by East and South East Asian political leaders. These leaders have argued that European political values have exercised an unhealthy hegemony over the international system, not only because of global influence exercised by European ideas during the colonial period, but because of 'Anglo-Saxon' dominance over the world orders that were set up in the aftermath of both the First and Second World Wars. This book considers the interaction between indigenous ('Asian') values and European ideology and the influence this relationship had on the nationalist and revolutionary movements of Southeast Asia that dominated the political systems of Southeast Asia in the period 1945-1975.
