Tutkimuksessa analysoidaan E. G. Gulinin kehitystä, linjauksia, käytännön toimia ja yleistä vaikuttavuutta suomalaisena ekumeenikkona. Kokonaisuudessaan Gulinin kansainvälinen toiminta heijastaa pääpiirteissään Suomen evankelis-luterilaisen kirkon 1900-luvulla läpikäymää kansainvälistymiskehitystä ja siinä tapahtuneita vaihteluita. Tutkimuksessa kiinnitetään huomiota ekumenia-käsitteen historiallisuuteen ja toisaalta myös sen kiistanalaisuuteen. Se, mitä Gulin itse tarkoitti ekumenialla, muuttui vuosien kuluessa.
