A Times Book of the Year: a revelatory new biography by Labour MP Nick Thomas-Symonds positions Wilson as Labour's most significant leader
Harold Gibbons (1910-1982), leader of St. Louis Teamsters Local 688, fought and defeated Communists and mobsters and was instrumental in ending racial discrimination in the union. His many friends included Frank Sinatra and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. For a few years, he was Jimmy Hoffa's right-hand man--the two fell out after the Kennedy assassination, which Hoffa celebrated and Gibbons mourned. Exploring his day-to-day work, the author reveals the full story of Gibbons' secret effort with Kissinger and Hoffa to bring an end to the Vietnam War.
From all appearances, Harold the Snowman looks just right. He has coal for a mouth, the customary pipe, a cozy scarf, and he stands tall at just the right height. But if you look closer, you'll see that Harold is shivering from the cold wind coming off the snow. You may even notice rivers of tears streaming from poor Harold's eyes. Harold is scared-but why? Can a snowman really be afraid of - snow? An incredible thing happens to Harold, something that makes him stop crying. A friend is just what Harold needs, and there's no better friend to a snowman in need than jolly old Saint Nick. Santa spies the sad snowman from way high above, quickly diverts his trip, and lands his sleigh next to Harold. As Harold catches his breath, dear old Santa Clause tells Harold something important. Harold may not be afraid of the snow after all. There may be something very important that can warm Harold's frightened heart. Can you guess what it is?
I can never remember the details after I wake up, but I've had the same nightmare too many times throughout the years, more than I can count. Recently I asked my brothers and sisters if they ever dream about the old house. Some tell me they do--of a room that wasn't there. That settles it. I'm turning this story over to my twelve-year-old incorrigible self. Only a scrawny kid skidding awkwardly toward puberty can explain how it feels to be haunted by the sins of his father, hunted by the town bullies, and taunted by a cantankerous ghost.Based on a real town, a real house, a real family, and maybe a real ghost, all names have been changed to protect the guilty.
