James Edward Howell Jr. stirs up memories of his childhood in his memoir And the Sun Rose on Another Day, a reminder of God's influence in our lives and the power of friends. Howell's book is a testament to strength and to how a ten-year-old boy can overcome the death of a father. He paints a picture of what his dad and grandpa were like before acknowledging their deaths. Life continues as he discovers two potential mentors-a cousin and a brother-in-law-and the power of family. Obstacles in life fade as he places emphasis on his faith. There's humor in tales of childish misadventures as well as stories of coping, the power of family love, and how Howell's family helped him become a man. Howell gives readers a snapshot of life during the Great Depression and what it was like to grow up during the beginning of World War II. Throughout it all, there has been one constant in his life: that God has always watched over him. That doesn't mean Howell won't have his challenges, but it means he's never alone.

This is a story of egos, so great that it boggles the mind. A simple acknowledgement and an apology would have been sufficient but neither could bring themselves to it. True, there would have been some quiet humiliation in the Chief Engineer's office but nothing like what I faced at their hands. They, Donald Hadden, Chief Engineer aboard the USNS John Lenthall and Caroline Hickey, 3rd Assistant Engineer aboard same.In order for my story to be realized it is necessary for me to refer to my journal, something I have been keeping for the last 15 years. I try to write daily about the previous day's events, anything that may be of interest or what other crew members were speaking of. Suffice it to say that I was not nor did I ever intend to document anybody however, I am certainly glad for my journal. With it, I will recount days and dates, events and behaviors on both the parts of Hadden and Hickey that have led me to draw my conclusions. For me, distasteful but necessary. I have also included the interview transcript, word-for-word with all its inconsistencies. This is not an indictment of Military Sealift Command, MSC. Indeed, I wonder who, off the ship, actually knows what happened? Did my complaints land on someone's desk and become lost? If so, I say "Shame on you." As of this writing I have yet to tell my story to anyone nor will I now; It's all here.

Oh, how hard it is to do the right thing Follow the Analyst as he navigates the philosophical challenges, intellectual puzzles and growing mission creep of nominating kill/capture targets for Special Operations Forces in Afghanistan. Stay with the Analyst as he is brought into a highly classified, futuristic program that puts him front and center in watching his recommendations play out in real time, forced to confront the consequences of his too-clever-by-half methodologies. How will he change? Or will he? Approved for public release by the US Department of Defense, A Less Vivid Future sits at the intersection of leadership and failure, of agency and structure: how hard it is to do the right thing, when the pressures in place are defining success in a way you know is fundamentally wrong. In 2015, J. Edward Conway co-wrote the textbook for conducting intelligence analysis in combat zones; A Less Vivid Future is the fictional, conceptual challenge to the assumptions that underlie that work.
