The Detroit railroad route known as the Dequindre Line started operations from the Detroit Riverfront in the mid-19th Century. In the 1920's the first mile of this line was lowered below grade as part of a major urban construction project in Detroit to separate the railroad tracks from the many roads crossing it in the quickly growing city. Over 700 photographs were taken before, during and after this construction project, showing not only the work being done but also a slice of Detroit as it existed alongside the railroad tracks on this route. This book is one of three volumes displaying most of these saved photographs that tell not only the story of a major construction project but also the story of a railroad line and of a part of a major industrial city in the early part of the 20th Century.
Together, They Founded the United States: Six Founding Fathers: Jay, Hamilton, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe
The term Founding Fathers is a twentieth century creation. The American Revolution was the catalyst that brought several different factions together to fight England, the common enemy. A diverse group of Colonial leaders determinately rallied the people from diverse regions to oppose what they saw as tyranny from across the ocean. These differences of opinion resulted in the creation of political parties, providing a mechanism and a forum for discussion and decision making rather than internal bloodshed. Multiple compromises resulted in the adoption of the United States Constitution in 1789. The focus of Together, They Founded the United States is six of these men who had significant impact upon the founding and sustaining of the nation. Each had his strengths, weaknesses, and strong opinions; therefore, each experienced opposition from his peers. The six Founding Fathers examined in this study are John Jay, Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe. Because of the abundance of information regarding the roles played by George Washington and Benjamin Franklin, they have been omitted.
Notorious C.O.P.: The Inside Story of the Tupac, Biggie, and Jam Master Jay Investigations from Nypd's First Hip-Hop Cop
As head of the first special force unit devoted exclusively to the investigation of hip-hop crime, first-grade detective Derrick Parker worked on some of the biggest criminal cases in rap history. From the shooting at Club New York to the murder of Tupac Shakur, Derrick was on the inside of hip-hop's most notorious crimes. Always straddling the fence between "po-po" and NYPD outsider, Derrick threatened police tradition to try and get the cases solved. He was the first New York detective on the Biggie Smalls' murder and discovered shocking and never-before-revealed information from an unlikely informant. He protected one of the only surviving eyewitnesses to the Jam Master Jay murder and knows the identity of the killers as well as the motivation behind the shooting. Notorious C.O.P. reveals hip-hop crimes that never made the paper--like the robbing of Foxy Brown and the first Hot 97 shooting--and answers some lingering questions about murders that have remained unsolved. The book that both the NYPD and the hip-hop community don't want you to read, Notorious C.O.P. is the first insider look at the real links between crime and hip-hop and the inefficiencies that have left some of the most widely publicized murders in entertainment history unsolved.

Tracing the careers of hip-hop's three most dynamic stars, this deeply reported history brilliantly examines the entrepreneurial genius of the first musician tycoons: Diddy, Dr. Dre, and Jay-Z. Being successful musicians was simply never enough for the three kings of hip-hop. Diddy, Dr. Dre, and Jay-Z lifted themselves from childhood adversity into tycoon territory, amassing levels of fame and wealth that not only outshone all other contemporary hip-hop artists, but with a combined net worth of well over $2 billion made them the three richest American musicians, period. Yet their fortunes have little to do with selling their own albums: between Diddy's Ciroc vodka, Dre's $3 billion sale of his Beats headphones to Apple, and Jay-Z's Tidal streaming service and other assets, these artists have transcended pop music fame to become lifestyle icons and moguls. Hip-hop is no longer just a musical genre; it's become a way of life that encompasses fashion, film, food, drink, sports, electronics and more -- one that has opened new paths to profit and to critical and commercial acclaim. Thanks in large part to the Three Kings -- who all started their own record labels and released classic albums before moving on to become multifaceted businessmen -- hip-hop has been transformed from a genre spawned in poverty into a truly global multibillion-dollar industry. These men are the modern embodiment of the American Dream, but their stories as great thinkers and entrepreneurs have yet to be told in full. Based on a decade of reporting, and interviews with more than 100 sources including hip-hop pioneers Russell Simmons and Fab 5 Freddy; new-breed executives like former Def Jam chief Kevin Liles and venture capitalist Troy Carter; and stars from Swizz Beatz to Shaquille O'Neal, 3 Kings tells the fascinating story of the rise and rise of the three most influential musicians in America.
