In T. E. Lawrence: Tormented Hero, Andrew Norman sheds new light on Lawrence of Arabia, who remains a mystery to this day. Lawrence's sexual orientation is discussed in detail, including his dislike of physical relationships, and it is suggested that he suffered from sexual aversion disorder. Evidence that he was beaten on several occasions, at his ownrequest, comes from several sources and appears to be irrefutable. New light is shed on his fatal motorcycle crash in May 1935, and evidence is presented showing that it occurred in a different location and manner to that which is generally supposed. Photographs taken at the time are compared with the present day topography of the site to support this entirely new theory. Other aspects of his life which are discussed, include his relationship with his parents, notably his problematical relationship with his mother Sarah; his role in the Arab Revolt and subsequent disillusionment; his friendship with some of the literati of the day including E. M.Forster, George Bernard Shaw, and Robert Graves; his love for and veneration of Thomas Hardy; how Shaw's wife Charlotte, became his confidante; and how he took Lady Astor pillion riding on his motorcycle.

This collection of short pieces (mostly unpublished, mostly lectures) represents work done between 1994 and 2008 by John Worthen, now Emeritus Professor at the University of Nottingham and its Professor of D. H. Lawrence Studies, 1994-2003. They range between his research into the manuscript of D. H. Lawrence's story "New Eve and Old Adam" in Tulsa, to his farewell lecture ("Ways of Saying Goodbye") at the University of Nottingham. Brief introductions recall the original occasions when the pieces were written or given as lectures; they recall John Worthen's underlying interest in the biographical and the tangible.

As Chief of Staff to Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig in 1918, General Sir Herbert Lawrence played a key role in the defeat of Germany in the First World War. This biography traces his remarkable career and argues that he has a strong claim to be recognised as one of the principal architects of Allied victory. Described as ‘a man of outstanding ability both as a soldier and in business’, it is surprising that this towering individual has received such little attention. He remains one of the forgotten figures of the war. Lawrence had the distinction of being highly successful in two different fields. As a businessman he was an influential financier and chairman of Vickers, one of the world’s foremost armaments companies between the wars. In the military sphere, he was one of the very few men to rise to the top echelon of the British army without being a regular career soldier. He gave up his lucrative job as a City banker to re-join the army at the outbreak of hostilities in 1914. After the war he resumed his successful financial career, eventually becoming known as the ‘Father of the City’. Despite his significant contribution to the war effort and his accomplishments in the commercial world, historians have largely neglected Lawrence. This account uses new material to reveal the achievements of this outstanding soldier and banker. Overcoming the personal tragedy of losing his two sons during the war, he became the most senior staff officer at General Headquarters [GHQ]. He was chief advisor to Haig and acted as his right-hand man throughout the final year of the conflict.

"Tickets Please" is a short story written by D.H. Lawrence. It is set during the First World War, when men in Britain were deployed in large numbers as soldiers, and women were engaged in employment roles that they had not previously undertaken. The main characters in the story are Cissy Meakin, Annie Stone, Nora Purdey and Laura Sharp employed as conductresses, and John Thomas Raynor employed as an inspector, for the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Tramways Company. This adaptation of the story for the stage, highlights the models of working practice adopted by the women, alongside the conflicted nature of gender in that socio-cultural context. The play reveals the consequences for Cissy and Annie of their respective romantic relationships with John Thomas, together with the range of reactions of all of the women in the story, as they seek to address his behaviour.
