Two children were born to them, Louis and Philippe. The first became the world-renowned monarch, Louis XIV. In 1928, Louis 'Louie' McBride was born into a life of grinding poverty and little future. But 'Louie' knew from a very early age that there was more to life than merely a continuation of what had gone before. He married the love of this life, Sally, and through sheer determination and persistence, he joined the great migration to the newly industrialized North and made a good life for himself and his family in New York. On retirement, he returned to South Carolina, where he continues to live with his dear wife. In the last 90 years of his life, many things have changed but in spite of the seismic political and social changes which have taken place in the United States of America, there are still too many reminders of how things used to be. This is the inspirational life of a man whose story spans the most critical time in American history and who has now finally found the peace, respect, and love he so richly deserves.

Fratino’s expressive style combines painting’s rich history with a sensibility that is unique to the present moment Since his critically acclaimed 2019 solo exhibition in New York, American painter Louis Fratino (born 1993) has been at the forefront of figurative painting’s international resurgence. This is the first major monograph for the artist, gathering more than 50 of his most important works to date. Although he has spoken of his admiration for modernist painters including Picasso and Marsden Hartley, Fratino's approach to the medium is highly personal, reconstructed from memories of his own fleeting perceptions. His figures radiate desire; whether poised in a moment of tranquility or entwined in a coital knot, he depicts them with a frankness that speaks to the intimacy of the artist’s tender gaze. For this publication, Fratino’s work is presented in a generously sized folio format inspired by 1930s avant-garde publications such as Minotaure and Verve, and its dust jacket features a new artwork by the artist.

Louis Vuitton: The Illustrated World of a Fashion Icon is an extraordinary illustrated biography of Louis Vuitton’s life, recounting his life and career and the birth of the Louis Vuitton brand, from the internationally renowned illustrator and author, Megan Hess. Louis Vuitton’s name is now synonymous with luxury, but the man behind the brand came from very humble beginnings, and his story is one of perseverance and vision: - Louis left his rural village at just 13 years old and took two years to walk to Paris, where he began learning the traditional craft of trunkmaking and packing. His particular skills in packing fashion eventually led to him becoming the personal trunkmaker for the stylish French empress. - He started his eponymous house in 1854 and quickly brought in the first of many innovations – the flat-top trunk, which became the must-have accessory in the golden age of travel. - While overcoming obstacles and achieving recognition in his lifetime, Louis also set up his son and grandson to take on the business with incredible success, bringing Louis Vuitton luggage to the world and developing further innovations, such as the unpickable lock and the iconic LV Monogram pattern. The brand’s expansion into bags was sparked by Coco Chanel ordering a custom handbag, and soon they were not just making innovative trunks for royalty and explorers but also handbags, loved by stars of stage and screen. - When the maison expanded into ready-to-wear under Marc Jacobs in the 2000s, the legacy of fashion and adventure was complete.

Louis de Niverville (1933–2019) was a painter and collagist. His experimental and thought-provoking art, often mislabelled as “surrealist,” defied simple categorization. The ninth of thirteen children, young Louis was sent to a sanatorium in Ottawa for treatment of spinal tuberculosis at age six. He remained there for four and a half years. This long-term confinement would become a major influence on his art. Hired as an illustrator by the CBC in the late 1950s, de Niverville quickly immersed himself in the burgeoning Toronto art scene. His work relied heavily on his dreams and daydreams, and explored aspects of the individual, culture and nature, and often featured surreal “inside-outside” spaces. At a time when Abstract Expressionism and its offshoots were dominant in the international art world, Louis’s early exhibitions in Toronto quickly seized the attention of respected art critics, and de Niverville was flagged as an artist to watch. This reputation plus a number of private commissions, including large-scale murals for Pearson International Airport and Spadina subway station, both in Toronto, helped thrust de Niverville to the forefront of the Toronto scene in the 1960s and 1970s.Edited by Thomas Miller—de Niverville’s partner of many decades and an artist in his own right—and international art dealer Philip Ottenbrite, Louis de Niverville: Pentimenti includes texts from renowned art critics and curators Tobi Bruce, Ihor Holubizky, and E.C. Woodley, which trace de Niverville’s rise in the Toronto scene, and which also provide critical art historical context to the depth and breadth of his unique practice. Heather Bell’s biographical piece on de Niverville’s childhood illuminates a practice seemingly born of childhood trauma and whimsy. Featuring more than 140 art reproductions and archival images, this is an in-depth examination of an artist who, in his unique portrayals of the individual, encouraged the exploration of the universal.
Louis Sébastien Mercier, 'Comment fonder la morale du peuple? Traité d'éducation pour l'avènement d'une société nouvelle'
How might Republican France create the homme nouveau, or the ideal citizen, upon which the nascent republic placed its hopes? This is the question that Louis S bastien Mercier (1740-1814) asks in this 1801 treatise on moral education, which has remained unedited until the present day. In this treatise, the polymath, known for his urban chronicles as well as his political engagement during the Revolution, tackles a question that pervades revolutionary discourse beginning in 1789: how can institutions be reformed in such a way that they can sow the seeds for the values of liberty, equality, and fraternity in the heart of every citizen? His moral philosophy, such as it is presented in this text, was largely inspired by German critical philosophy and Kant's works in particular, which Mercier helped to make more widely known in France. This newly edited manuscript is thus particularly important for an understanding of both the author's intellectual trajectory and the history of ideas in the long eighteenth century. Written at the beginning of the Consulate during Napoleon's rise to power, this text offers scholars a retrospective look at the social and political upheaval that marked the last decades of the ancien r gime and the revolutionary period. Its content reflects both Mercier's personal experiences as a survivor of the Terror and the philosophical debates of his time.
Louis-René des Forêts and Inner Autobiography
Louis-Ren des For ts (1916-2000) devoted the last twenty-five years of his writing life to an innovative practice of autobiography, spanning poetry and fragmentary prose, and culminating in the key works Po mes de Samuel Wood (1987), Ostinato (1997) and the posthumously published Pas pas jusqu'au dernier (2001). Ian Maclachlan's study is the first to take this innovation in life-writing as its principal focus and to draw out the wider resonances of des For ts's distinctive project for the theory and practice of autobiography. Des For ts's unusual traversal of genres, formal experimentation, and sparseness of biographical detail give rise to a new mode of abstract, impersonal autobiographical writing. Echoing des For ts's own, earlier use of the term autobiographie int rieure in relation to his short-story collection La Chambre des enfants (1960), as well as his friend Georges Bataille's idiosyncratic notion of exp rience int rieure, this novel style of life-writing is explored here under the rubric of 'inner autobiography'.Ian Maclachlan is Professor of French Literature and Fellow of Merton College, University of Oxford.

First exhibited at the Exposition Universelle (Paris, 1900) Louis XIII has embodied sophistication for over a century. Each bottle is a unique work of art, from the decanter - each of which requires eleven craftsmen to blow the crystal, apply the ornamentation and wrap the 20-K gold collar around its slender neck - to the cognac itself. Composed of up to 1200 eaux-de-vie from the first cru of the Cognac region, Grande Champagne, Louis XIII balances notes of myrrh, honey, dried roses, plum, honeysuckle, cigar boxes, leather, figs and passion fruit in an unmatched, ambrosial blend. This book is an ode to the cognac, sung by some of its earliest and most vibrant devotees. We delve into the diaries and letters of two passionate travellers aboard the America-bound cruiser Normandie, 1935; the agenda of King George VI and his wife Queen Elizabeth on their visit to Versailles in 1938; and the first-hand account of a young millionaire who, while on a trip to Constantinople in 1928, requested that the Orient-Express stop so that the surface of his brandy might lie still. Tracing the history of the iconic decanter from the pewter flask found after the Battle of Jarnac to the inspired glass vessels that captivated the royal courts of Europe, Louis XIII Cognac - The Thesaurus promises an elegant and entertaining glimpse into this prestigious cognac and the characters who drank it.

Louis-Ferdinand Céline was one of the most innovative novelists of the twentieth century, and his influence both in his native France and beyond remains huge. This book sheds light on Céline’s groundbreaking novels, which drew extensively on his complex life: he rose from humble beginnings to worldwide literary fame, then dramatically fell from grace only to return, belatedly, to the limelight.Céline’s subversive writing remains fresh and urgent today, despite his abhorrent political views and the inflammatory pamphlets that threatened to ruin his reputation. The first English-language biography of Céline in over two decades, this book explores new material and reminds us why the author belongs in the pantheon of modern greats.

The celebrated French biologist Louis Pasteur was a scientific pioneer; his discoveries and advances led to treatments which saved countless lives. This biography takes us from Pasteur's formative years as a curious and bright child, to the first glimmers of promise he showed through school. His keen understanding of scientific principles, and a drive to enquire, experiment and innovate was soon apparent to his tutors. Pasteur was particularly interested in microbiology; his work upon germ theory and bacteriology revolutionized the idea of disease and the spread of sickness.Pasteur is also remembered for advancing the science of vaccination. The rabies virus - at the time referred to as hydrophobia for its thirst-inducing qualities - was a deadly scourge upon France and wider Europe. Through rigorous experiment, Pasteur found that vaccines administered in a timely manner prevented rabies from progressing to its fatal stage. This discovery paved the way for further advances in vaccines, increasing their significance in disease prevention.Given accolades by the government of France, and famed for retaining his diligence well into his senior years, Pasteur was granted a state funeral for his accomplishments.
