▓ ▓ ▓ Dott. The ECOMAC project (Eco-management Accounting as a Tool of Environmental Man agement) has provided a framework for linking environmental management with man agement accounting. It was funded in Theme 4, 'Human Dimensions of Environmental Change' in the EU Environment and Climate Research Programme. The project is of high policy relevance by contributing to the on-going debate on eco management accounting, reporting and indicators. It is also an area needing further re search. I would like to thank the research team, companies that participated as associated con tractors, and the advisory panel. Jonathan Parker DG XII/D-5, European Commission Theme on Human Dimensions of Environmental Change 7 Preface The ECOMAC project This document is the final report on the project 'Eco-management accounting as a tool of environmental managemenf (ECOMAC). This research project was conducted under the Environment and Climate Programme (Human Dimension of Environmental Change) of the European Commission (DG XII). The ECOMAC project investigated how companies are using or intend to use environ mental costs and benefits figures in support of their decisions, and what they have been doing to remedy the limitations of conventional management accounting in this area. The research was largely explorative in nature, but the project also produced a structured overview of the subject and made suggestions and recommendations as to how compa nies could improve their own environmental accounting.

A long time has passed since the war act on Cancer declared by former USA president Nixon, almost half a century ago. Today, after so many years of feverish research and uncountable efforts worldwide, the end of the war appears far as ever, whereas the fight is leading researchers to newer and newer battlefronts while frontiers in bioscience are continuously being surpassed. In this scenario, “The Selfish Cell” is a script record of the most important strategic points gathered during these years of war, with the goal to provide solid ground onto which to step ahead for future assaults against this terrible disease. At the same time, it is an attempt to shift the debate on cancer toward a more peaceful and possibly productive semantic terrain, where to reflect with the aid of superior wisdom to finally get out of that terrible chaos of fight and death dominating our days. In this perspective, “The selfish cell” becomes an occasion for reflecting the limits of our human selfishness and their consequences on both our social and natural environment.

Galileo Galilei (1564–1642), his life and his work have been and continue to be the subject of an enormous number of scholarly works. One of the con- quences of this is the proliferation of identities bestowed on this gure of the Italian Renaissance: Galileo the great theoretician, Galileo the keen astronomer, Galileo the genius, Galileo the physicist, Galileo the mathematician, Galileo the solitary thinker, Galileo the founder of modern science, Galileo the heretic, Galileo the courtier, Galileo the early modern Archimedes, Galileo the Aristotelian, Galileo the founder of the Italian scienti c language, Galileo the cosmologist, Galileo the Platonist, Galileo the artist and Galileo the democratic scientist. These may be only a few of the identities that historians of science have associated with Galileo. And now: Galileo the engineer! That Galileo had so many faces, or even identities, seems hardly plausible. But by focusing on his activities as an engineer, historians are able to reassemble Galileo in a single persona, at least as far as his scienti c work is concerned. The impression that Galileo was an ingenious and isolated theoretician derives from his scienti c work being regarded outside the context in which it originated.

Here the potential of w/o/a/ndering, anarchism, and storytelling in EarlyChildhood Education is explored. Autoethnography is employed to blend personalexperiences with theoretical insights, dissecting contemporary educationallandscapes through philosophical traditions like anarchism andexistentialism. Central to this exploration is the concept of w/o/a/ndering, symbolizing an interplay between wonder and wandering encouraging anopen-ended quest for knowledge, imagination, belonging and meaning.Drawing from scholars like Luigina Mortari and Maria Zambrano, this thesisreimagines educational encounters beyond traditional pedagogy, highlightingstorytelling as a possibility for encounter, play and philosophicalinquiry. Positioned within anarchic educational practices, storytelling fostersgenuine connections between educators and children. Anarchism is examinedas a lived experience, challenging power dynamics in education, influencedby theorists like Colin Ward. Additionally, it delves into the contributionsof educators such as Paulo Freire and Walter Kohan, advocating for criticalpedagogy to shape inclusive educational environments.Ultimately, the dissertation prompts reflection on educators' roles in EarlyChildhood Education, blending theory with practical examples to encourageagency and meaningful relationships in educational practice.

Posting of Workers in EU Law

Posting of Workers in EU Law

Matteo Bottero

Bulletin of Comparative Labour Relations Volume 108 The progressive expansion of the phenomenon of posting of workers - the practice whereby a worker is sent for a limited period of time to another Member State in order to provide a service - is a formidable bone of contention in the conflict between a fully integrated internal market economy and Member States' aims to protect domestic social standards. This book challenges the recently adopted Directive (EU) 957/2018, which came into effect in July 2020, by examining the relevant EU regulatory framework and investigating the actual quantitative dimension of the posting phenomenon and its real impact on the EU labour market. In the process, the author exposes a serious misalignment of the legal framework provided for by the new Directive with the EU values and principles of equality, solidarity and fair competition. Drawing on a wide variety of sources - including Court of Justice case law, Advocate Generals' opinions, Eurostat data, Commission documents and reports, and academic literature - the author provides in-depth analyses of such elements of the problem as the following: proper definition of the concepts of 'posting' and 'posted worker' in EU law; host country's discretion in relation to the part of domestic regulation it can impose on posted employees; misconceived clash between social rights and economic freedoms; coordination of national social security systems; proliferation of unlawful and fraudulent practices; 'regime shopping' and exploitation of existing regulatory loopholes; misleading association of posting with issues of 'social dumping' and 'unfair competition'; orientation of political influence during the drafting process of relevant EU legislation; expected controversial economic impact of Directive (EU) 957/2018; concrete realisation of the EU values and principles of equality, solidarity and fair competition; and definition and pursuit of a 'European social model'. Normative arguments developed in the course of the analysis put forward viable recommendations for future improvements in the field. The Union's commitment to the development of a 'European social model' cannot avoid taking into account the matters of equality, solidarity and fair competition. In this sense, given the increasing prominence of the free movement of services in shaping a European labour market characterised by an ever-growing degree of mobility, this book's analysis of the phenomenon of posting of workers may serve as a litmus test of political and legislative action at EU level. In its dual analytic and normative aspect, the book takes a giant step towards future discussions and developments in the area of intra-EU labour mobility. It will be welcomed by legal practitioners in labour and social security law and industrial relations, legal scholars, EU institutions and agencies, businesses and trade unions.
Social Media Activism

Social Media Activism

This book focuses on the referendums against water privatization in Italy and explores how activists took to social media, ultimately convincing twenty-seven million citizens to vote. Investigating the relationship between social movements and internet-related activism during complex campaigns, this book examines how a technological evolution — the increased relevance of social media platforms — affected in very different ways organizations with divergent characteristics, promoting at the same time decentralized communication practices, and new ways of coordinating dispersed communities of people. Matteo Cernison combines and adapts a wide set of methods, from social network analysis to digital ethnography, in order to explore in detail how digital activism and face-to-face initiatives interact and overlap. He argues that the geographical scale of actions, the role played by external media professionals, and the activists’ perceptions of digital technologies are key elements that contribute in a significant way to shape the very different communication practices often described as online activism.

This book examines how the perception of terrorism threat erodes civil liberties, sows doubt about the loyalties of immigrants, and heightens the left-right ideological divide. The book presents original analysis of survey data and experiments conducted in Australia, Europe and the United States.Research in the book posits questions that others have largely avoided: How does the threat of terrorist violence undermine multicultural democracies? What are the psychological and social mechanisms that explain how the threat of terrorism can change political attitudes? What is the relationship between terrorism and death threats? What is the role of media in shaping the perception of terrorism threat? And what are the ethical responsibilities of journalists? This book will help readers distinguish between groundless speculation and solid scientific knowledge of the topic. Moreover, it provides concrete recommendations on how to prevent the most negative consequences of the polarization of political attitudes, such as social divisions, exclusivism and conflict. Given the broad geographical scope of the research presented in the book, specifically North America, Europe and Australia, this book will appeal to broad scope of readers.

The objective of this book is to provide the reader with a comprehensive survey of the topic compressed sensing in information retrieval and signal detection with privacy preserving functionality without compromising the performance of the embedding in terms of accuracy or computational efficiency. The reader is guided in exploring the topic by first establishing a shared knowledge about compressed sensing and how it is used nowadays. Then, clear models and definitions for its use as a cryptosystem and a privacy-preserving embedding are laid down, before tackling state-of-the-art results for both applications. The reader will conclude the book having learned that the current results in terms of security of compressed techniques allow it to be a very promising solution to many practical problems of interest. The book caters to a broad audience among researchers, scientists, or engineers with very diverse backgrounds, having interests in security, cryptography and privacy in informationretrieval systems. Accompanying software is made available on the authors’ website to reproduce the experiments and techniques presented in the book. The only background required to the reader is a good knowledge of linear algebra, probability and information theory.

Recovering Civility during COVID-19

Recovering Civility during COVID-19

Springer Verlag, Singapore

This Open Access book examines many of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic through the distinctive lens of civility. The idea of civility appears often in both public and academic debates, and a polarized political climate frequently leads to allegations of uncivil speech and behaviour. Norms of civility are always contested, even more so in moments of crisis such as a global pandemic. A focus on civility provides crucial insight and guidance on how to navigate the social and political challenges resulting from COVID-19. Furthermore, it offers a framework through which citizens and policymakers can better understand the causes and consequences of incivility, and devise ways to recover civility in our social and political lives.
