The Herero Genocide

The Herero Genocide

Matthias Häussler

Berghahn Books
2021
sidottu
Drawing on previously inaccessible and overlooked archival sources, The Herero Genocide undertakes a groundbreaking investigation into the war between colonizer and colonized in what was formerly German South-West Africa and is today the nation of Namibia. In addition to its eye-opening depictions of the starvation, disease, mass captivity, and other atrocities suffered by the Herero, it reaches surprising conclusions about the nature of imperial dominion, showing how the colonial state’s genocidal posture arose from its own inherent weakness and military failures. The result is an indispensable account of a genocide that has been neglected for too long.

"So I made up my mind to open my heart for at least five minutes to this man who just looks at people in silence. During the encounter I felt more love than I could have ever imagined -- pure love. I felt that I was loved. On precisely that day, all pain fell away from me." ... “It’s a very intense light he awakens in people.” ... "When he looked at me, I felt like someone was wiping away all my worries," said visitors from Germany, Austria and the USA after an event with Braco. It is impressive to stand in front of a person who gazes at the visitors of his events in silence. No gripping speech, no new teachings or wisdom -- especially no new religion -- just silence. Braco has the courage to stand in front of thousands of people at events and congresses. He has a gift some scientists say the world has not yet seen in this form. In 2012, Braco received a peace prize at the UN in New York. A German doctor wrote this book after his own intense experiences with Braco and his gaze. More than 70 visitors to the events with Braco have their say, including doctors, psychologists, scientists of physics, biochemistry and health sciences, as well as consciousness researchers and a theologian. The visitors' direct experiences and the scientists' expertises bring the reader closer to the unknown, which has no name but, through Braco's gaze, brings happiness and health back to people.

Based on new archival sources, Freedom for Capital, Not People tells the story of how the Mont Pèlerin Society transformed the world economy. Founded in 1947 by economist Friedrich von Hayek, by the turn of the 1970s the society commanded influence at the highest levels of international monetary policy - with debates sparked by Hayek, Milton Friedman and Ludwig von Mises emigrating from the seminar room to the halls of power. The group's collective agenda, the result of years of fierce argument and shrewd political strategising, would dominate the next half century of global capitalism.

The normalisation of hate speech, including antisemitic rhetoric, poses a significant threat to social cohesion and democracy. While global efforts have been made to counter contemporary antisemitism, there is an urgent need to understand its online manifestations. Hate speech spreads easily across the internet, facilitated by anonymity and reinforced by algorithms that favour engaging--even if offensive--content. It often takes coded forms, making detection challenging.Antisemitism in Online Communication addresses these issues by analysing explicit and implicit antisemitic statements in mainstream online discourse. Drawing from disciplines such as corpus linguistics, computational linguistics, semiotics, history, and philosophy, this edited collection examines over 100,000 user comments from three language communities. Contributors explore various facets of online antisemitism, including its intersectionality with misogyny and its dissemination through memes and social networks. Through case studies, they examine the reproduction, support, and rejection of antisemitic tropes, alongside quantitative assessments of comment structures in online discussions. Additionally, the volume delves into the capabilities of content moderation tools and deep-learning models for automated hate speech detection. This multidisciplinary approach provides a comprehensive understanding of contemporary antisemitism in digital spaces, recognising the importance of addressing its insidious spread from multiple angles.

The International Law of Biotechnology

The International Law of Biotechnology

Matthias Herdegen

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd

Biotechnology is a field that inspires complex legal and ethical debates on an international scale. Taking a fresh approach to the subject, Matthias Herdegen provides a comprehensive assessment of the regulation of biotechnology processes and products from an international and comparative perspective. Herdegen explores how regulatory approaches to controversial issues such as: stem cell research and cloning and gene therapy differ across jurisdictions due to conflicting values and risk perceptions. The book goes on to examine how international regulatory instruments aim to address these conflicting perspectives and provide judgments based on broad international consensus. Chapters explore the interaction between biotechnology and different fields of law including: human rights, intellectual property, trade law and environmental law. In doing so, a number of complex issues are raised such as the need to balance commercial interests with socio-cultural considerations and the need to ensure respect for human dignity in the pursuit of biomedical research. Providing a concise and accessible guide to a complex field of international law, this book will be of great value to those researching the law and regulation of biotechnology, biomedicine and biodiversity both within the EU and on an international scale. The book will also be a useful resource for practicing lawyers as it includes sources from a diverse range of legal systems and analyses relevant decisions by international adjudicatory bodies.

Economic growth isn't working, and it cannot be made to work. Offering a counter-history of how economic growth emerged in the context of colonialism, fossil-fueled industrialization, and capitalist modernity, The Future Is Degrowth argues that the ideology of growth conceals the rising inequalities and ecological destructions associated with capitalism, and points to desirable alternatives to it. Not only in society at large, but also on the left, we are held captive by the hegemony of growth. Even proposals for emancipatory Green New Deals or postcapitalism base their utopian hopes on the development of productive forces, on redistributing the fruits of economic growth and technological progress. Yet growing evidence shows that continued economic growth cannot be made compatible with sustaining life and is not necessary for a good life for all. This book provides a vision for postcapitalism beyond growth. Building on a vibrant field of research, it discusses the political economy and the politics of a non-growing economy. It charts a path forward through policies that democratise the economy, "now-topias" that create free spaces for experimentation, and counter-hegemonic movements that make it possible to break with the logic of growth. Degrowth perspectives offer a way to step off the treadmill of an alienating, expansionist, and hierarchical system. A handbook and a manifesto, The Future Is Degrowth is a must-read for all interested in charting a way beyond the current crises.
Making the Law Explicit

Making the Law Explicit

Matthias Klatt

Hart Publishing
2008
sidottu
Legal argumentation consists in the interpretation of texts. Therefore, it has a natural connection to the philosophy of language. Central issues of this connection, however, lack a clear answer. For instance, how much freedom do judges have in applying the law? How are the literal and the purposive approaches related to one another? How can we distinguish between applying the law and making the law? This book provides answers by means of a complex and detailed theory of literal meaning. A new legal method is introduced, namely the further development of the law. It is so far unknown in Anglo-American jurisprudence, but it is shown that this new method helps in solving some of the most crucial puzzles in jurisprudence. At its centre the book addresses legal indeterminism and refutes linguistic-philosophical reasons for indeterminacy. It spells out the normative character of interpretation as emphasized by Raz and, with the help of Robert Brandom's normative pragmatics, it is shown that the relativism of interpretation from a normative perspective does not at all justify scepticism. On the contrary, it supports the claim that legal argumentation can be objective, and maintains that statements on the meaning of a statute can be right or wrong, and take on inter-subjective validity accordingly. This book breaks new ground in transferring Brandom's philosophy to legal theoretical problems and presents an original and exciting analysis of the semantic argument in legal argumentation. It was the recipient of the European Award for Legal Theory in 2002. 'This book represents, on the one hand, a reception of Robert Brandom's important theory including applications of this theory in the field of legal philosophy and, on the other, an exploration of the limits of an appeal in legal interpretation to the text. The enquiry thereby impinges upon the central juridico-philosophical themes of meaning, objectivity, and normativity. The author's work counts as a significant contribution to analytical jurisprudence and is deserving of a wide readership.' Robert Alexy, Professor for Public Law and Legal Philosophy, Kiel. 'Klatt focuses on a very profound theory of concept formation and uses this theory in a creative way to solve classical problems of legal argumentation.' Aleksander Peczenik

National Medievalism in the Twenty-First Century

National Medievalism in the Twenty-First Century

How ideas and ideals of an imagined, protean, national Middle Ages have once again become a convergence point for anxieties about politics, history and cultural identity in our time - and why. After a period of abeyance, the link forged in the nineteenth century between the Middle Ages and national identity is increasingly being reclaimed, with numerous groups and individuals mining an imagined medieval past to present ideas and ideals of modern nationhood. Today's national medievalism asserts itself at the interface of culture and politics: in literature and television programming, in journalism and heritage tourism, and in the way political actors of various stripes use a deep past that supposedly proves the nation's steady exceptionalism in a hectic globalised world. This book traces these ongoing developments in Switzerland and Britain, two countries where the medieval past has recently been much invoked in negotiations of national identity, independence and Euroscepticism. Through comparative analysis, it explores examples of reemerging stories of national exceptionalism - stories that, ironically, echo those of other nations. The author analyses depictions of Robert the Bruce and Wilhelm Tell; medievalism in the discourse surrounding Brexit as well as at the Welsh Senedd; novels like Paul Kingsnorth's The Wake; community-based art such as the Great Tapestry of Scotland; and elaborate public commemorations of Swiss victories (and defeats) in battle. Basing his critical readings in current theories of cultural memory, heritage and nationalism, the author explores how the protean national Middle Ages have once again become a convergence point for anxieties about politics, history and cultural identity in our time - and why.

Surgical Scene Generation for Virtual Reality-Based Training in Medicine
One of the most important elements needed for effective training in Virtual Reality (VR) is the generation of variable scenarios. Without this, trainees quickly become familiar with a scene and the natural variations encountered in real-life situations cannot be reproduced. Generating such models in VR-based applications is difficult, but with the increase in computational power (allowing for larger and more finely-detailed virtual environments) there is an increasing demand for improved methods for model acquisition, enhancement, optimization and adaptation. The field of medicine lends itself very well to VR-based training particularly in the area of surgery. In this book Matthias Harders examines the main components needed when defining effective scenarios: • scene geometry • organ appearance • biomechanical parameters providing an extensive overview of related work and introducing specific solutions in detail. With plenty of examples to show the outcome and performance of the methods presented in the book, this will be an essential resource for all those involved in generating training scenarios in medical education, as well as in VR-based training in general.

The first publication to consider the relationship between these two major artists of the High Renaissance Through most of Michelangelo’s working life, one of his closest colleagues was the great Venetian painter Sebastiano del Piombo (1485–1541). The two men met in Rome in 1511, shortly after Sebastiano’s arrival from his native city, and while Michelangelo was based in Florence from 1516 to 1534 Sebastiano remained one of his Roman confidants, painting several works after partial designs by him. This landmark publication is about the artists’ extraordinary professional alliance and the friendship that underpinned it. It situates them in the dramatic context of their time, tracing their evolving artistic relationship through more than three decades of creative dialogue. Matthias Wivel and other leading scholars investigate Michelangelo’s profound influence on Sebastiano and the Venetian artist’s highly original interpretation of his friend’s formal and thematic concerns. The lavishly illustrated text examines their shared preoccupation with the depiction of death and resurrection, primarily in the life of Christ, through a close analysis of drawings, paintings, and sculpture. The book also brings the austerely beautiful work of Sebastiano to a new audience, offering a reappraisal of this less famous but most accomplished artist. A New York Times best art book of 2021 Titian (active 1506–1576) produced a masterful group of paintings for Philip II of Spain, celebrating the loves of gods, goddesses, and mortals. Depicting scenes from Ovid’s narrative poem Metamorphoses, Titian named them “poesie” and considered the works as visual equivalents of poetry. This volume presents a detailed study of the complete series—Danaë, Venus and Adonis, Perseus and Andromeda, Diana and Actaeon, Diana and Callisto, and The Rape of Europa, as well as The Death of Actaeon—lavishly illustrated with details of these emotionally charged paintings. The book explores Titian’s creative process and technique, in addition to his use of literary and visual sources and his correspondence with Philip II. The artistic legacy of the series for later European painting is also examined in the works of artists such as Rubens, Velázquez, and Rembrandt. Offering the most comprehensive overview of these remarkable works, Titian: Love, Desire, Death is an indispensable resource for scholars and admirers of Renaissance painting.Published by National Gallery Company/Distributed by Yale University PressExhibition Schedule:National Gallery, London (March 16–June 14, 2020)National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh (July 11–September 27, 2020)Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston (February 11–May 9, 2021)

The Emissary of the Christ of God

WORD The Universal Spirit,U.S.

"I never wanted to be a prophet..." Read the biography of a woman of the people, who was called by God to serve Him by being the interpreter of His word as a prophet. The author, Matthias Holzbauer, passes on stories from Gabriele, in which she describes her childhood and youth. She tells what it meant for her to accept the call of God and to serve Him, the Eternal, as the interpreter of His word of light. And she accepted this call. One hundred percent — until today. "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” So spoke Jesus of Nazareth 2000 years ago. Gabriele is the living proof that also today, in our time, God does not let Himself be silenced — for the Free Spirit blows where it will. Gabriele is the proof that God, the Father of us all, loves His children. For He never forsakes us — not even in times of upheavals and disasters, into which we human beings have maneuvered ourselves. An excerpt from the biography, a quote from Gabriele: "'Life is revelation,' this is how He spoke to me. 'If you are for the life, then you are linked in unity and love with the innermost part of your neighbor, and also with the love in the animals, in the plants and in the minerals.' He taught me the fine and subtle langue of light of the animals, of the plants and the stones. ...And so, the prophetic Spirit does not simply speak through the prophet without further ado — first, the prophet has to do what God wants. Whatever the prophet passes on to his fellow people from the law of life, he has to first have learned on himself. Then he becomes clean and is constantly connected to the prophetic stream... This book contains 2 CDs: CD1: "Deep Breathing" and "Abide in You" – 2 meditations and CD2: “You Spurn the One God and Believe in Eternal Damnation. I Am the God of Love!” – A God-Father Revelation from 1996"
