Iraq and the Second Gulf War

Iraq and the Second Gulf War

Mohammad-Mahmoud Mohamedou

Austin Winfield,U.S.
1997
nidottu
This important study seeks to address the issues of state building and regime security as key variables affecting and determining a foreign policy-making process during a crisis and confrontation. Mohamedou proceeds from the notion that decision makers' dispositions matter their worldview, ideology, beliefs, and axioms play a role in state building as well as the historical operational environment (societal, regional, and international). The case this study is concerned with is the Second Gulf War, initiated on August 2, 1990, with the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, and which came to an end on February 28, 1991, after a military confrontation between Iraq and an international coalition of twenty-eight countries led by the United States of America.
Micellar Catalysis

Micellar Catalysis

Mohammad Niyaz Khan

CRC Press Inc
2006
sidottu
Micelles are prevalent in naturally occurring and biological catalytic reactions. However, it is only in recent decades that scientists have developed kinetic models clarifying how micelle-mediated catalysis works at a molecular level. Written by a leading expert in the field, Micellar Catalysis is an in-depth examination of how micelles affect reaction mechanisms and reaction rates in organic and inorganic reactions. The book first discusses the structural and chemical properties of micelles and the role of thermodynamics, concentration, and additives in forming micelles. Demonstrating how intermolecular forces influence the reaction mechanisms, the author presents kinetic models for reactions catalyzed by normal micelles, as well as mixed micelles and metallomicelles. The book also compares various types of catalytic reactions with and without micelles to quantify their effect on reaction rates and rate constants. Using this information, it illustrates how micelles can modify reaction rates and improve catalytic efficiency, particularly for industrial processes. The final chapter explains the principles of kinetics used for data analysis. Focused on kinetic, chemical, and physical aspects of micelle-mediated reactions, this book offers clear insight into the complex mechanisms that occur in biological reactions. Micellar Catalysis is an essential source of reference for scientists involved in the research and development of micelles for industrial and biochemical applications.
Risk Analysis in Engineering

Risk Analysis in Engineering

Mohammad Modarres

CRC Press Inc
2006
sidottu
Based on the author’s 20 years of teaching, Risk Analysis in Engineering: Techniques, Tools, and Trends presents an engineering approach to probabilistic risk analysis (PRA). It emphasizes methods for comprehensive PRA studies, including techniques for risk management. The author assumes little or no prior knowledge of risk analysis on the part of the student and provides the necessary mathematical and engineering foundations. The text relies heavily on, but is not limited to, examples from the nuclear industry, because that is where PRA techniques were first developed. Since PRA provides a best-estimate approach, the author pays special attention to explaining uncertainty characterization. The book begins with a description of the basic definitions and principles of risk, safety, and performance and presents the elements of risk analysis and their applications in engineering. After highlighting the methods for performing PRAs, the author describes how to assess and measure performance of the building blocks of PRAs, such as reliability of hardware subsystems, structures, components, human actions, and software. He covers methods of characterizing uncertainties and methods for propagating them through the PRA model to estimate uncertainties of the results. The book explores how to identify and rank important and sensitive contributors to the estimated risk using the PRA and performance assessment models. It also includes a description of risk acceptance criteria and the formal methods for making decisions related to risk management options and strategies. The book concludes with a brief review of the main aspects, issues, and methods of risk communication. Drawing on notes, homework problems, and exams from courses he has taught as well as feedback from his students, Professor Modarres provides a from-the-trenches method for teaching risk assessment for engineers. This is a textbook that is easy to use for students and professors alike.

Empires And Walls: Globalization, Migration, And Colonial Domination
Why do empires build walls and fences? Are they for defensive purposes only, to keep the 'barbarians' at the gate; or do they also function as complex offensive military structures to subjugate and control the colonised? In Empires and Walls, Mohammad A. Chaichian meticulously examines the rise and fall of the walls that are no longer around; as well as the impending fate of 'neo-liberal' barriers that imperial and colonial powers have erected in the new Millennium. Chaichian provides evidence that walls always signal the fading power of an empire.

30 Seconds from Gaza

30 Seconds from Gaza

Mohammad Sabaaneh; Ilan Pappe

Devastating cartoons from acclaimed Palestinian political cartoonist that convey the outrage and scope of the genocide in Gaza. Mohammad Sabaaneh is an acclaimed Palestinian political cartoonist who has gained worldwide attention for his insightful and provocative linocut artwork, which sheds light on the reality of Palestinian life under occupation. His striking black-white-and-gray cartoons bring attention to the horrors of the Israeli assaults and atrocities in Gaza and open people's eyes to the suffering Palestinians endure under Israel's brutal settler colonialism and its system of apartheid. After his social media accounts were shadow banned and taken down, resulting in the loss of 15 years worth of content, Sabaaneh started questioning the fate of the thousands of videos and pictures of Gaza that can be erased in a second--the commemoration of its historical importance and the importance of documenting what is happening on the ground. The fate of Gaza's story and history is in the hands of a few corporations intent on hiding the crimes committed against the people of Gaza. Capturing and drawing scenes from videos posted on social media was a decision Sabaaneh made as a way to archive moments and information that are expected to be banned and erased later. From the genocide in Gaza to the atrocities in the West Bank, Sabaaneh's political cartoons portray a world in which injustice is unending, but so is the resilience of the Palestinian people. 30 Seconds from Gaza: Diary of Genocide is an artistic triumph and a powerful testament to Palestinian sumud (steadfastness). It is proof of art's capacity to make visible what oppressors want the world to forget. In the words of Mohammad Sabaaneh "30 seconds. 30-second peek through videos from the heart of Gaza to social media platforms. 30 seconds of people's lives in Gaza; a small window showcasing the atrocities and hell Palestinians in Gaza are living in. 30 seconds of people's lives, of people like us. Humans, nothing less... Watching the full scene unfold is gut wrenching, scenes that not many people can watch. Sometimes, we get the 'sensitive content' warning before the video begins... Can you imagine how the ones living those 30 seconds feel? Capturing and drawing scenes from these videos was a decision I made as a way to archive moments and information that are expected to be banned later. It allows me to showcase what is happening on the ground, showcasing the crimes committed against the people of Gaza ... The reasoning behind using Indian drawing ink is its permanence; water cannot erase it. No substance at all can erase it, resembling the dried-up blood splattered across the roads of Gaza, its hospitals, its children's faces... never erased, never forgotten." Notes from the author My story begins in prison. The occupation has held Palestinians in various prisons, some of them small and called jails; others larger and called towns and villages, which are surrounded by military checkpoints, walls, and settlements. The political reporting seen on the news every day can sometimes feel removed and distant, and I am saddened to see our stories are being reduced to numbers and statistics. The life of the Palestinian has become a hemorrhage between military checkpoints, and between one prison and another. This is the reality of settler colonialism. And this is how it impacts us as individuals. This book is an attempt to translate headlines into stories and illustrations, so that you, the reader, can see and feel the reality of Palestinian life.
Arabic Second Language Learning and Effects of Input, Transfer, and Typology
Despite the status of Arabic as a global language and the high demand to learn it, the field of Arabic second language acquisition remains underinvestigated. Second language acquisition findings are crucial for informing and advancing the field of Arabic foreign language pedagogy including Arabic language teaching, testing, and syllabus design. Arabic Second Language Learning and Effects of Input, Transfer, and Typology provides data-driven empirical findings for a number of basic and high-frequency morphosyntactic structures with two novel typological language pairings, examining Arabic second language acquisition data from adult L1 Chinese- and Russian-speaking learners of Arabic as a foreign language. Alhawary’s study examines the different processes, hypotheses, and acquisition tendencies from the two learner groups, and documents the extent of the successes and challenges faced by such learners in their L2 Arabic grammatical development during the first three years of learning the language. In addition, the book offers both theoretical and practical implications related to input exposure, L1 and L2 transfer, and typological and structural proximity effects. This book serves as a valuable resource for both second language acquisition experts and foreign language teaching practitioners.

The field of nanotechnology is one of the most popular areas for current research and development in basically all technical disciplines. This obviously includes polymer science and technology and even in this field the investigations cover a broad range of topics. This would include microelectronics (which could now be referred to as nanoelectronics) as the critical dimension scale for modern devices now below 100 nm. Other areas include polymer-based biomaterials, nanoparticle drug delivery, miniemulsion particles, fuel cell electrode polymer bound catalysts, layer-by-layer self-assembled polymer films, electrospun nanofibers, imprint lithography, polymer blends and nanocomposites. Even in the field of nanocomposites, many diverse topics exist including composite reinforcement, barrier properties, flame resistance, electro-optical properties, cosmetic applications, and bactericidal properties. Nanotechnology offers unique approaches to probe and control a variety of biological and medical processes that occur at nanometer length scales, and is expected to have a revolutionary impact on biology and medicine. Among the approaches for exploiting nanotechnology in medicine, nanoparticles offer some unique advantages as sensing, image enhancement, and delivery agents. Several varieties of nanoparticles with biomedical relevance are available including, polymeric nanoparticles, metal nanoparticles, liposomes, micelles, quantum dots, dendrimers, and nanoassemblies. To further the application of nanoparticles in disease diagnosis and therapy, it is important that the systems are biocompatible and capable of being functionalised for recognition of specific target sites in the body after systemic administration. We have discussed the novel nanocomposites and nanoparticles from various applications and drug delivery systems for cancer therapy.

This book gives you a comprehensive overview of key optimization tools that can be used to design radar waveforms and adaptive signal processing strategies under practical constraints -- strategies such as power method-like iterations, coordinate descent, and majorization-minimization – that help you to meet the more and more stressing sensing system requirements. The book walks you through how radar waveform synthesis is obtained as the solution to a constrained optimization problem such as finite energy, unimodularity (or being constant-modulus), and finite or discrete-phase (potentially binary) alphabet, which are dictated by the practical limitations of the real systems. Several approaches in each of these broad frameworks are detailed and various applications of these optimization techniques are described. Focusing on a holistic approach rather than a problem-specific approach, the book shows you what you need to effectively formulate waveform design and understand the flexibility of the framework for adapting to your own specific needs. You’ll have full access to the tools and knowledge you need to design waveform with optimized correlation/cross-correlation properties for SISO/SIMO and MIMO radars, taking into account spectral constraints for cognitive rads, as well as coexistence with communications and mitigate possible Doppler and quantization errors, and more. The book also includes representative software codes that further help you generate the described solutions. With its unique style of covering mathematical results along with their applications from diverse areas, this is a much-needed, detailed handbook for industry researchers, scientists and designers including medical, marine, defense, and automotive companies. It is also an excellent resource for advanced courses on radar signal processing.
