Throwing Moses Under the Bus

Just thinking about terms like morals, law, and commandments seems dull, maybe even mean-spirited. Still, a quick look at social media, the endless news cycle, and magazines in the grocery checkout line show that we love to hear about failure, recovery, and who has crossed the latest moral boundary. At the same time, the argument over whose boundaries matter or whether they matter doesn't ever end. In fact, all these stories and concerns start somewhere in high school and keep going. Who can tell me what to do? Why do I have to do things this way? I can't wait to be free from all these rules. In Throwing Moses Under the Bus, teacher/author John Cabascango examines the ancient rules and stories that show us why these stone-tablet rules still matter in a digital age. Using examples from twenty-one years of teaching, novels, movies, and the American high school hallway, you are invited to see why boundaries matter to people who want to live freely.

The story of a tiny baby's epic journey--and the surprising help he gets along the way--in a touching, transcendent picture book. In the time of the pharaohs, a loving mother saves her son by tucking him into a basket and setting him afloat on the wide, wild Nile River. Over one long night, the creatures of the Nile--Curious Ibis, Mama Hippo, Mighty Crocodile--watch over Moses, nudge him on his way, and keep him safe through catching reeds and a raging storm. As morning breaks, the river delivers the baby safe and sound into an unexpected safe haven--the welcoming arms of the pharaoh's daughter. With a poetic text and sumptuous watercolors, Caryn Yacowitz and Julie Downing introduce the youngest readers to Moses and the Exodus story and weave a warm, reassuring tale of love and comfort. Ideal for Passover and year-round, this universal story invites little ones of any faith to experience a thrilling journey in perfect, protected safety.

The principles lay a solid foundation for this Pastor-Directed Model to equip pastors to successfully address conflict in a way that brings glory to God.Based on Moses' example, this model is founded on seven essential priorities that every pastor should practice at all times, in order to carry out four simple, yet practical steps to address conflict successfully. Moses is widely seen as one of the most significant persons of all time. The extensive correlation between Moses' work and the work of modern-day chaplains is highly instructive. Vastly different cultures and many centuries of time do not diminish the connection. Moses faced many challenges throughout his life. Chaplains today face almost all the same challenges. Many of these issues are explored in this book. Chaplains and other readers may find insights, perspective, encouragement, and guidance as well as some practical ways of dealing with issues.

Black Moses

The first biography of soul pioneer Isaac Hayes, whose groundbreaking music provided the foundation for hip-hop and a new racial paradigm.“Black men could finally stand up and be men because here's Black Moses; he's the epitome of Black masculinity. Chains that once represented bondage and slavery now can be a sign of power and strength and sexuality and virility.” —Isaac Hayes Within the stoned soul picnic of Black music icons in the ’60s and ’70s, only one could bill himself without a blush as Moses, demanding liberation for Black men with his notions of life and self—Isaac Lee Hayes Jr., the beautifully sheen, shaded, and chain-spangled acolyte of cool, whose high-toned “lounge music” and proto-rap was soul’s highest order—heard on twenty-two albums and selling millions of records. Hayes’s stunning self-portraits, his obsessive pleas about love, sex, and guilt bathed in lush orchestral flights and soul-stirring bass lines, drove other soul men like Barry White to libidinous license. But Hayes, who called himself a “renegade,” was a man of many parts. While he thrived on soulful remakes of pop standards, his biggest coup was writing and producing the epic soundtrack to Shaft, memorializing the “black private dick” as a “complicated man,” as coolly mean and amoral as any white private eye. This new musical and cultural coda delivered Hayes the first Oscar ever won by a Black musician, as well as the Grammy for Best Song. Yet, few know Hayes’s remarkable achievements. In this compelling buffet of sight and sound, acclaimed music biographer Mark Ribowsky—who has authored illuminating portraits of such luminaries as Stevie Wonder, Little Richard, and Otis Redding—gallops through the many stages of Hayes’s daring and daunting life, starting with Hayes’s difficult childhood in which his mother died young and his father abandoned him. Ribowsky then takes readers through Hayes’s rise at Memphis’s legendary soul factory, Stax Records, first as a piano player on Otis Redding sessions then as a songwriter and producer teamed with David Porter. Tuned to the context of soul music history, he created crossover smashes like Sam & Dave's “Soul Man,” “Hold on I'm Comin’,” and “I Thank You,” making soul a semi-religion of Black pride, imagination, and joyful emotion. Hayes’s subsequent career as a solo artist featured studio methods and out-of-the-box ideas that paved the way for soul to occupy the top of the album charts alongside white rock albums. But his prime years ended prematurely, both as a consequence of Stax’s red ink and his own self-destructive tendencies. In the ’90s he claimed he had finally found himself, as a minion of Scientology. But Scientology would cost him the gig that had revived him—the cartoon voice of the naively cool “Chef” on South Park—after he became embroiled in controversy when South Park’s creators parodied Scientology in an episode that caused the cult’s leaders to order him to quit the show. Although Hayes was honored by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, the brouhaha came as his seemingly perfect body finally broke down. He died in 2008 at age sixty-eight, too soon for a soul titan. But if only greatness can establish permanence in the cellular structure of music, Isaac Hayes long ago qualified. His influence will last for as long as there is music to be heard. And when we hear him in that music, we will by rote say, “We can dig it.”
Brother Moses Tells the Story of Jesus
But let me holla at you about the chillest, realist, hittiness, no quitiness Brother to ever spit rhyme. And He was the greatest of all time Today is the day to reread the story of Jesus Christ from a rather different outlook, an outlook so unique that it is sure to not only introduce a new perspective on the story to adults, but introduce this powerful story of our Lord and Savior to young adults. This is the story of Jesus told by Brother Moses in the "hip hop go go" language of today's youth. During a trip to the Rick Ball Players Showcase in Miami, Florida, Brother Moses discovered, to his dismay, that many of the high school students, though they debated about popular music and lyrics, did not talk about Jesus or even mention His name. He knew these were not the only teens who did not know His story, so after thinking back to what he listened to at their age, he decided to write out the story using words they could relate to. Brother Moses Tells the Story of Jesus introduces teen readers to a condensed retelling of how Jesus healed the people to His twelve disciples and their ultimate betrayal to His crucifixion to, finally, His resurrection. As an ordained minister, Brother Moses has preached this retelling over the years, and has received incredible reactions. He has found that the younger members in his audiences get very excited when they hear it, and even older members are appreciative of the language and are inspired by the story. Slang changes so quickly from generation to generation, yet the story of Jesus remains the same. A simple rephrasing of words, as Brother Moses has demonstrated, will ensure all generations know the story of their Lord and Savior.

Ghislaine Girabaldi slammed her classified copy of an NSA briefing paper on her desk in front of Alicia Clooney. "What's this?" demanded the speaker. "Have you been to church lately?" Alicia Clooney picked up the document. The paper was an intelligence agency brief, classified Top Secret and NOFORN, which meant No Foreign access, with the subject line: "Islamic Jihad meetings in Damascus over the Stony Island Gang." "Is there something in here that matters to me?" asked Alicia. "I don't know anyone in Syria. And why, if it's Top Secret, are you showing it to me?" The speaker pursed her lips. "Don't bullshit me. You've seen a lot more than this, Alicia. God only knows how much Intel John gave you. But this involves your estranged husband, terrorists, and a priest." "Okay, what did John do now?" "He offered a bribe to the head of Islamic Jihad." Alicia gasped. "To do what? How much? Why?" "He wants Islamic Jihad to kill that old Jew, David Green," said Girabaldi.
