This groundbreaking work draws on a vast range of research into human sexuality to demonstrate that homosexuality is not a phenomenon limited to a small minority of society, but is an aspect of a complex sexual harmony that the human race inherited from its animal ancestors. Through a survey of the patterns of sexual expression found among animals and among societies around the world, and an examination of the functional role homosexual behavior has played among animal species and human societies alike, the author arrives at some provocative conclusions: that a homosexual or bisexual phase is a normal part of sexual development, that same-sex relations play an important balancing role in regulating human reproduction, that many societies have institutionalized homosexual traditions in the past, and that the harsh condemnation of homosexuality in Western society is a relatively recent phenomenon, unique among world societies throughout history. This well researched and meticulously documented book is the first that integrates into a coherent picture the startling revelations about human sexuality coming from the recent work of sexual researchers, psychologists, anthropologists and historians. The view that emerges, of an ambisexual human species whose complex sexual harmony is being thwarted by the imposition of an artificial understanding of nature, represents a new way of thinking about sex.

In 1620, English settlers later known as Pilgrims landed in a world that was new to them and settled in a place they called Plimoth, in what is now Massachussetts. Native Americans from a group called the Wampanoag, meaning "People of the Dawn Land," had fished and hunted this land for thousands of years. Without help from their native neighbours, the English settlers would not have survived their first winter in their new home. As it was, nearly half the colony died. In the at Autumn of 1621 these two groups met for a period of three days as part of a very complicated political situation. Over this period, there was feasting to celebrate the harvest, and the English and natives may have sat down together to share food. This was not a religious occasion; nor was it entirely harmonious, but it grew to be so perceived in later American consciousness. After the Civil War, English descendants looking back on this event romanticised it and created from it the modern holiday we know today as Thanksgiving. In October 2000, Plimoth Plantation with the cooperation of the Wampanoag community reenacted the 1621 harvest festival with careful attention to historical accuracy and with deliberate intent to strip away the myths grown up over the centuries. National Geographic photographer Sisse Brimberg captured the event for 1621 in a series of elegant and artistic photographs that give as close a glimpse of 17-century life as we are likely to have in modern times. Ninety Wampanog Indian men plus additional women and children and Plimoth reenactors representing the 52 English colonists participated in this event, making it an unprecedented cooperative effort on the part of Plimoth and the native community to tell the true story of the first year the colonists lived at Plimoth. Readers will learn about 17 century clothing, food, and shelter, plus get a detailed account of the event connected with the 1621 harvest festival. This book makes us look at this historical with a fresh eye and can help readers to hear the many voices that still speak to us from the past.

Continuing problems in the Canadian economy have been the occasion of a partisan debate between nationalists and continentalists, both of whom claim the staples thesis to be the premise of their proposed solutions. As one of the principal progenitors of that premise Harold Innis contributed much to the roots of this debate and its present flowering cannot be understood apart from what he had to say. This is an account of the Canadian problem as it was elaborated in the staples thesis of H.A. Innis. But it is more than that. In order to cope with the economics of a satellite country in the age of machine and post-machine industry, Innis found it necessary to fill in the empty boxes of neoclassical value theory and, at times, to make new ones when the standard theory provided insufficient room to contain the facts of the case. He went beyond price theory to come to grips with the unsolved problems of growth and to work out answers of his own. The result was a new kind of economics based, as was the economics of J.M. Keynes, on the assertion of a new ethical foundation. Unlike Keynes, Innis was concerned with the long run, for we can survive now only by understanding the coping with the long-run consequences of past policies; and, given the right policies now, the nation as a whole will live on. Innis and Keynes are like two sides of a coin in the new issue of value theory. We can flip that coin to see which policy will come up, or we can account for both sides in some sort of rational compromise. A New Theory of Value is a plea for a rational approach to the problem.

In their place he proposes a covenant concept of state, community, and family assurances to derive from our common provision of a civic endowment that we undertake to sustain now and for future generations of Canadians.O'Neill argues that if Canada is to survive as a national community capable of responding to the global market, we must reaffirm the civic foundations of the state. If we fail to do this, we will not have a leaner society, only a meaner one. This society will be hostile to capitalism and socialism alike. If we can rededicate the Canadian commons to the well-being of the civic person, Canada will contribute a model of survival and governance among the nations of the twenty-first century.

Networks in Tropical Medicine explores how European doctors and scientists worked together across borders to establish the new field of tropical medicine in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book shows that this transnational collaboration in a context of European colonialism, scientific discovery, and internationalism shaped the character of the new medical specialty. Even in an era of intense competition among European states, practitioners of tropical medicine created a transnational scientific community through which they influenced each other and the health care that was introduced to the tropical world. One of the most important developments in the shaping of tropical medicine as a specialty was the major sleeping sickness epidemic that spread across sub-Saharan Africa at the turn of the century. The book describes how scientists and doctors collaborated across borders to control, contain, and find a treatment for the disease. It demonstrates that these medical specialists' shared notions of "Europeanness," rooted in common beliefs about scientific, technological, and racial superiority, led them to establish a colonial medical practice in Africa that sometimes oppressed the same people it was created to help.

For twenty-first-century veterans of the evolution culture wars, Primitive Minds: Evolution and Spiritual Experience in the Victorian Novel, by Anna Neill, makes unlikely bedfellows of two Victorian -discoveries- evolutionary theory and spiritualism. Victorian science did much to uncover the physical substratum of mystical or dreamy experience, tracing spiritual states to a lower, reflex, or more evolutionarily primitive stage of consciousness. Yet science's pursuit of knowledge beyond sense-based evidence uncannily evoked powers associated with this primitive mind: the capacity to link events across space and time, to anticipate the future, to uncover elements of the forgotten past, and to see into the minds of others.Neill does not ask how the Victorians explained away spiritual experience through physiological psychology, but instead explores how physical explanation interacted with dreamy content in Victorian accounts of the mind's most exotic productions. This synthesis, she argues, was particularly acute in realist fiction, where, despite novelists' willingness to trace the nervous origins of individual behavior and its social consequences, activity in hidden regions of the mind enabled levels of perception inaccessible to ordinary waking thought.
