Mr Percy: Portrait Modeller in Coloured Wax: The Miniatures and Tableaux of Samuel Percy
"Erudite, while still being fun to read." — Professor Tim Neild, physiologist and medical educator "A triumph of Social History in the Georgian period." — Dr Nigel Cooke FRCP, physician and ceramic historian This is the first biography and reference book dedicated to Samuel Percy, a modeller who produced an impressive oeuvre of wax portraits and tableaux in the mid-to-late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Based in part on the author's own substantial collection of Percy waxes, this book follows Percy from his beginnings in Dublin, at the Dublin Society Drawing Schools, working with the famed statuary John Van Nost; to England, where he journeyed from town to town, putting advertisements in regional newspapers. These revealing advertisements have been gathered here for the first time, in order to track his travels. Whether taking the likeness of Princess Charlotte of Wales, or falling victim to a highway robber in Birmingham, these fragments of Percy's history paint a fascinating picture of his life as a wandering artisan. As well as a chronological narrative of Percy's life, this book commits an entire chapter to an area of his work that has never been studied before: his miniature tableaux. These portray various subjects, both religious and secular, from Christ on the Cross to playing children. They are catalogued in an appendix, and almost thirty are illustrated. Based entirely on original research, Mr. Percy: Portrait Modeller in Coloured Wax features over a hundred illustrations, celebrating both Percy's accomplishments and the works of other modellers for comparison.

Jenni Beard is dyslexic. She discovered this not as a child but after her son Peter was diagnosed with the condition and she noticed `familial' similarities. She thus writes from a unique and telling standpoint when outlining the much overlooked topic's history and the controversies which surround it. Sometimes called `word-blindness' (and also known by other names), there is even today debate about whether dyslexia exists at all, or only in specific (or even individual) forms, or as part of other physical or mental conditions. From Percy to Peter traces these arguments, both historically and, centrally, during, the years of the Word Blind Centre. Skilfully weaving the experience of the dyslexic with the opinions of top diagnostic experts and opinion formers, Jenni Beard supports her wide-ranging survey of dyslexia with a wealth of facts, anecdotes and extracts from learned writings. The book takes the reader inside the mind of those who wrestle with reading or writing in a way that leads to better understanding. Percy was the first child to be diagnosed as dyslexic and his name has become a byword for insiders. By linking the subject to her own (and her son Peter's) experiences she helps to explain matters to ordinary readers. Among topics included are: the pioneers and their work; ways of overcoming dyslexia; and the debates, papers, books and magazines around what has sometimes been wrongly dubbed a `middle-class disease', or one with links to brain damage or madness. Written from a highly informed personal standpoint the book brings a neglected topic to life.
Tales of the kings of England: stories of camps and battle-fields, wars and victories. By: Stephen Percy / the pseudonym / Joseph Cundall . ILLUSTRAT
Joseph Cundall (22 September 1818 Norwich - 10 January 1895 Wallington, London), was a Victorian English writer under the pseudonym of "Stephen Percy", a pioneer photographer and London publisher of children's books. He provided employment for many of the best artists of the day by using them as illustrators. Joseph was the son of Eliza and Benjamin Cundall, a draper. He trained as a printer in Ipswich, and aged 16 found work in London with Charles Tilt, a bookseller and publisher. He wrote two books for Tilt and succeeded N Hailes in 1841 at the Juvenile Library, 12 Old Bond Street. In 1848 he started a lending library for children called St. George's Reading Library. In 1843 Cundall became publisher of the Home Treasury children's books, a series conceived and edited by Henry Cole under the pseudonym Felix Summerly. Cole, who was later knighted, became the first director of South Kensington Museum which later changed its name to the Victoria and Albert Museum. Because of his association with Henry Cole, his early business ventures were successful, but by 1849 he had gone bankrupt. During the same year he started a partnership with H M Addey and moved his business premises to 21 Old Bond Street. This partnership dissolved in 1852 and Cundall moved to 168 New Bond Street, where his interest in photography started and where he founded
