Hereditary Bone and Joint Diseases in the Dog: Osteochondroses, Hip Dysplasia, Elbow Dysplasia
This book goes far beyond a description of bone and joint disorders, with each chapter providing information on the history, pathogenesis, diagnosis (physical and radiographic), therapy and prognosis of a particular canine skeletal disease as well as how the disease will affect the dog's life. The text covers all clinically relevant physical regions in the dog, eg, shoulder, elbow, hip, stifle and tarsus, and presents a group of actual, clinical osteochondrosis cases involving different anatomical locations. The authors address the importance of selection of dogs for breeding, including changes in breed appearance and disease propensity and the effect of high-energy diets in fast-growing animals. Discussion includes the impact of a lifetime of pain for the affected dog and the treatment expense for clients, as well as steps that help the owner curb the progressive aspects of bone or joint diseases and manage the animal's discomfort. In daily practice, client questions about skeletal disorders are routine. This instructional text provides answers, incidence figures, advice about surgery and timing, and honest analyses of treatment failures and successes. It offers a fresh look at OCD, dysplasias and other bone diseases, with realistic assessments and positive directives for pet care and client support.

Using a unique data-rich study of Newcastle’s becoming of a metropolitan city-region in the 19th century, this book explores a new understanding of how successful cities attain a metropolitan status through disruptions of incessant economic advances being ameliorated by myriad social organizations to create a new vibrant urban environment. The book defines the specific process of ‘becoming metropolitan’ by bringing together economic and social urban studies to explain an interactive development that when successful, creates a metropolitan city region. In addition, a real example of this is meticulously described through a detailed case study that traces the process across decades to a metropolitan outcome. In doing so, it combines theoretical and empirical understandings within a single text and providing accessible information to a unique and large data set. Becoming Metropolitan will appeal to graduates and researchers of Geography, Sociology, Planning and History specializing in cities and urban studies. It will also be valuable to a larger public audience with interest in cities, as ‘metropolitan’ is a commonplace idea easily understood, and in the case-study city.

Peter Giblin describes, in the context of an introduction to the theory of numbers, some of the more elementary methods for factorization and primality testing; that is, methods independent of a knowledge of other areas of mathematics. Indeed everything is developed from scratch so the mathematical prerequisites are minimal. An essential feature of the book is the large number of computer programs (written in Pascal) and a wealth of computational exercises and projects, in addition to more usual theory exercises. The theoretical development includes continued fractions and quadratic residues, directed always towards the two fundamental problems of primality testing and factorization. There is time, all the same, to include a number of topics and projects of a purely "recreational" nature.

This volume is devoted principally to the theme of behavioral develop ment. The study of ontogeny has attracted some of the most bitter and protracted controversies in the whole field of ethology and psychology. This is partly because the arguments have reflected more general and continuing ideological battles about nature and nurture. In the opening essay, Oppenheim shows how these debates have recurred in much the same form over the last century. His chapter also brings out a more worrying feature of such argument. He demonstrates that authors who are well known for their strongly held partisan views have written in much more balanced ways than is usually admitted. Although the ex cluded middle is familiar enough in academic argument, the dynamic tensions actually present in developing systems may be particularly prone to polarize debate about what is actually happening. This point is elegantly explored by Oyama in her essay on her concept of maturation.

England. The winter of 1944. And as the last grim months of the Second World War grind to a close, three members of an Irish Republican unit - two brothers and their downtrodden sister, Kathleen are on the run, wanted for passing information onto the Germans, pursued by the "rat-catcher", a British Army officer with good reason to see them hang. But securing their capture proves to be hard. For in an attempt to meld into her surroundings, Kathleen happens upon a British Military Hospital recruiting young women to train for the nursing reserve, and who would suspect one of the white robed angels? No one it seems. And certainly not the badly injured patient to whom she grows deeply attached - Flight Lieutenant David Asher, a British pilot whom Kathleen nurses back from the brink. But how long will it be before Asher discovers the truth about his "angel", the secret which would mean Kathleen losing the man she loves and the whole new world which has opened up around her? And yet, with the "rat-catcher" moving in ever closer, she knows she stands to lose a whole lot more.

Radionuclide Ventricular Function Studies

The main subject of this book is the investigation of cardiac function and in particular ventricular function with radionuclide-based techniques. Emphasis is given to the study of clinical cases which can routinely occur in the life of a busy cardiological practice, by comparing conventional techniques, such as the electrocardiogram, the echocardiogram or the catheter study, with the newer nuclear medicine imaging procedures. Four basic images are given (end systole, end diastole, amplitude and phase), obtained either with a first pass or an equilibrium methodology, and the information analyzed. The clinical material is not exhaustive but covers a broad spectrum, with examples of coronary artery disease, valvular disease, cardiomyopathy, conduction disease and congenital heart disease. The book is aimed not only at the practising specialist (cardiologist, radiologist, nuclear medicine physician) but also at the general physician and surgeon interested in finding out what modern non invasive nuclear medicine procedures have to offer in the investigation of the heart.
