In the harsh semi-desert called the Karoo, large hairy spiders run swiftly over the sun-baked ground, seeking out shady spots. They rush towards anyone walking close to them in what appears to be a terrifying attack, but they are only chasing the shadows people cast on the ground. They are called shadechasers. In 1965, Sylvia is twelve years old and living with her family in the Karoo town of Mooiboom. The town is on the fertile banks of a river, and, despite the heat and dust, it is something of an oasis. On the surface, life in Mooiboom appears normal and wholesome. There is a thriving sheep farming community, a good school, and a university has been opened in the town, bringing with it an influx of academic staff and students. But for many inhabitants of Mooiboom, life is far from normal. At school, Sylvia and her friend Lyall suffer a the hands of teachers and bullies. Jim, the only undertaker in the district, has been living with his own terrible secret for over ten years. The Bushmen, the first human inhabitants of the Karoo, said that "a story is like the wind - it comes from a far-off quarter...". This story blows into Mooiboom with a young on a motorbike. He brings with him an unhealthy obsession that becomes a catalyst for the extraordinary events that follow, some of which, like the plants of the Karoo, turn out to have very deep roots. The ever-vigilant shadechasers are never far away and play an unnerving role as the story unfolds...

The Tragedy of the Assyrian Minority in Iraq
First published in 2005. This fascinating account, written by a British Army officer serving in Iraq, describes a little-known ethnic minority in that country. The Assyrians, like other minorities in the area, lived across many modern national boundaries. Unlike other ethnic groups, they were distinct and usually well-off. Their land became Christianized, and after the end of the British mandate in Iraq in 1932, it was revealed that the Assyrians were being persecuted by the Moslems. The survivors of the Assyrians, a once-great people and a once-great Christian Church, lived in the Hakkari mountains in the north-eastern part of Iraq.

First Published in 1974. Throughout this title two interweaving and interacting themes are apparent. One is the changes resulting from the increasingly important role of politics and politicians in states which until 1963 had been colonies. Politics is, as it were, superimposed on administration. The other is the impact of the Federal Government. From 1963 onwards Sarawak and Sabah were changing because they were “new states”. A short bibliography includes a section on Malaya/Malaysia, which is necessary because this book studies a rather unusual form of the problem of political development as Sarawak and Sabah are not independent countries.

Armies of Pestilence

The global outbreak of Covid-19 appears to be unprecedented in a world which has not suffered a serious pandemic for a century, while society had almost forgotten the enormous impact of highly infectious diseases throughout history. Pestilence, however, has played a major role in ending the Golden Age of Athens, wrecking Justinian's plans to restore the Roman Empire to its former glory, and killing untold millions in Latin America after the Spanish invasion. Despite its importance, historians have tended to minimise the role of infectious disease, partly because of a lack of scientific knowledge. This has resulted in a distorted view both of the past and of the danger of disease to modern society. In Armies of Pestilence, R.S. Bray, a distinguished biologist and an able historian, corrects this view with an exploration of the influence of disease on history. The book surveys the principal epidemics around the world and across the centuries, including scholarly discussion around those which cannot be certainly identified. In each case, Bray examines the origins of the outbreaks, as well as the symptoms, the mortality rate and the social and economic turmoil left in their wake. Bray pays special attention to the infamous organism that caused the Black Death, Yersina pestis, as well as other grimly familiar bogey-men of pestilential history including malaria, smallpox, typhus, cholera and influenza, and AIDS. Government responses to outbreaks are assessed, and the inability of governments to deal effectively with disease is a recurring theme. The relationship between disease and war, with the former often responsible for more deaths than the latter, is also considered in detail, as was the case during the last great influenza pandemic of 1918-19, at the end of the First World War

This is the second edition of a very popular 1991 book describing the physics and technology of semiconductor electronic devices exploiting the Hall effect. These are magnetic field sensitive devices such as Hall elements, magnetoresistors, and magnetotransistors. Hall effect devices are commonly used as magnetic field sensors and as means for characterizing semiconductors. The book provides a clear analysis of the relationship between the basic physical phenomena in solids, the appropriate materials characteristics, and the characteristics of Hall effect devices. Particular emphasis is placed on important developments inspired and made possible by recent advances in microelectronics. A special feature of the book is its broad scope. The book provides physical basics of Hall effect devices, clear guidelines for the design of practical Hall elements, detailed descriptions of the best interface electronic circuits, examples of the most successful industrial products in the field, and interesting examples of their applications.
Taste Chemistry

Taste Chemistry

R.S. Shallenberger

Chapman and Hall

sidottu
The object ofthis text is to examine, and elaborate on the meaning of the established premise that 'taste is a chemical sense.' In particular, the major effort is directed toward the degree to which chemical principles apply to phenomena associated with the inductive (recognition) phase of taste. A second objective is to describe the structure and properties of compounds with varying taste that allow decisions to be made with respect to the probable nature of the recognition chemistry for the different tastes, and the probable nature of the receptor(s) for those tastes. A final objective is to include appropriate interdisciplinary observations that have application to solving problems related to the chemical nature of taste. Taste is the most easily accessible chemical structure-biological activity relationship, and taste chemistry studies, i.e. the chemistry of sweetness, saltiness, sourness, and bitterness, have application to general biology, physiology, and pharmacology. Because it involves sensory perception, taste is also of interest to psychologists, and has application to the food and agricultural industries. The largest portion of the text is directed toward sweetness as, due to economic and other factors, the majority of the scientific studies are concerned with sweetness. The text begins with a prologue to describe the problems associated with the study of taste chemistry. Then, there is an introductory chapter to serve as an overview of the general interdisciplinary knowledge of the subject. It is followed by a chapter on the fundamental chemical principles that apply to taste induction chemistry.

Augustine of Hippo is a giant in the history of Christian thinking. Commended by St. Jerome for having virtually "refounded the old faith", he was a philosopher, theologian, preacher, interpreter of scripture, monk and bishop. Augustine dominated the minds of medieval theologians, had an enormous effect on the leaders of the Reformation, and continues to influence Christian thought today.Mary Clark provides a clear and rounded account of what Augustine taught and argued, from his rejection of Manicheism through his ideas on grace, salvation and the Trinity.
Single Particle Detection And Measurement

Single Particle Detection And Measurement

R S Gilmore

sidottu
This book provides a summary of the state of science in teh field of single particle detection and measurement. The text delineates between those low performance detectors, capable of registering only a large number of particles and those complex, highly designed systems capable of detecting and measuring single interactions or events. The author describes the problems associated with detection, measurement and subsequent interpretation of such quantum processes. He also evolves the subject from its roots in nuclear and particle physics into latter day applications such as probes for investigation of materials and objects. The different nature and use of high-energy particles compared with photons is highlighted.
