The Theatre of Joseph Conrad

The Theatre of Joseph Conrad

Richard J. Hand

Palgrave Macmillan
2005
nidottu
Although the dramatic dimension to Joseph Conrad's fiction is frequently acknowledged, his own experiments in drama have traditionally been marginalized. However, in all of Conrad's plays we see a distinct effort to investigate seriously the dramatic form and some of his plays are startlingly ahead of their time. Furthermore, all of the plays are adaptations and comprise One Day More , based on Tomorrow , Laughing Anne , based on Because of the Dollars, Victory: A Drama and The Secret Agent . The creation of these reveals much about the history, theory and practice of this fascinating cultural process.
The Politics of Prayer in Early Modern Britain

The Politics of Prayer in Early Modern Britain

Richard J. Ginn

Bloomsbury Academic
2020
nidottu
Prayer was regarded as an essential arm of the State and even a method of 'thought control' in early modern England. In the seventeenth Century, the period covered by Richard Ginn's study, Common Prayer dominated people's everyday lives at a national level, in communities and congregations, as well as privately in households. Ginn demonstrates how prayer represented the search for pattern, order and purpose in and between these different layers of society in a period when England was struggling to come to terms with political and social turbulence, rocked by the violence of the Civil War, unease over the Commonwealth and the uncertainties of the Restoration. Ginn argues that the importance of Prayer as a stabilizing force during these times of instability cannot be underestimated; it fostered a sense of national identity, an integrating principle at a vulnerable time for England, putting the social order in a greater context under a sovereign God.

A hands-on resource designed to teach the mathematics of signals and systems with MATLAB In this newly revised second edition of Practical Signals Theory with MATLAB Applications, Richard Tervo delivers an articulate presentation of the mathematics underlying real world engineering applications and everyday electronic devices. The new edition provides extended coverage of communication systems—including digital and spread spectrum communications—as well as a new introductory chapter on using MATLAB as a tool to visualize the mathematics of signals and systems. The text contains numerous hands-on examples and expanded end-of-chapter exercises. It is a one-stop reference for signals and systems, explaining aspects of commonplace signal types, orthogonality and signal decomposition, transformations, and the graphical presentation of calculations and results. Readers will also find: A solid introduction to the mathematics of continuous and discrete signals represented in time and frequency domainsThorough coverage of the classic Fourier, Laplace and z-transforms, and their many applicationsNew end-of-chapter worked exercises, a variety of in-line study questions with answers and easily reproducible MATLAB code demonstrationsBonus material on related applications in different fields of study and a companion website designed to support additional learning Perfect for undergraduate and graduate students of signals and systems, signals theory, and related areas of electrical engineering,Practical Signals Theory with MATLAB Applications will also benefit researchers and professors in the field of system design and signal processing.

Altered Pasts

Altered Pasts

Richard J. Evans

Little, Brown
2014

A bullet misses its target in Sarajevo, a would-be Austrian painter gets into the Viennese academy, Lord Halifax becomes British prime minister in 1940: seemingly minor twists of fate on which world-shaking events might have hinged. Alternative history has long been the stuff of parlour games, war-gaming and science fiction, but over the past few decades it has become a popular stomping ground for serious historians. Richard J. Evans now turns a critical, slightly jaundiced eye on the subject. Altered Pasts examines the intellectual fallout from historical counterfactuals. Most importantly, Evans takes counterfactual history seriously, looking at the insights, pitfalls and intellectual implications of changing one thread in the weave of history.
Eric Hobsbawm: A Life in History

Eric Hobsbawm: A Life in History

Richard J. Evans

At the time of his death at the age of 95, Eric Hobsbawm (1917-2012) was the most famous historian in the world. His books were translated into more than fifty languages and he was as well known in Brazil and Italy as he was in Britain and the United States. His writings have had a huge and lasting effect on the practice of history. More than half a century after it appeared, his books remain a staple of university reading lists. He had an extraordinarily long life, with interests covering many countries and many cultures, ranging from poetry to jazz, literature to politics. He experienced life not only as a university teacher but also as a young Communist in the Weimar Republic, a radical student at Cambridge, a political activist, an army conscript, a Soho 'man about town', a Hampstead intellectual, a Cambridge don, an influential journalist, a world traveller, and finally a Grand Old Man of Letters. In A Life in History, Richard Evans tells the story of Hobsbawm as an academic, but also as witness to history itself, and of the twentieth century's major political and intellectual currents. Eric not only wrote and spoke about many of the great issues of his time, but participated in many of them too, from Communist resistance to Hitler to revolution in Cuba, where he acted as an interpreter for Che Guevara. He was a prominent part of the Jazz scene in Soho in the late 1950s and his writings played a pivotal role in the emergence of New Labour in the late 1980s and early 1990s.This, the first biography of Eric Hobsbawm, is far more than a study of a professional historian. It is a study of an era.
Perception of Reality

Perception of Reality

Richard J Robertson

Xlibris
2003

Many observers of the world scene in recent decades have raised questions about the future of Western Civilization, and the United States as the foremost exemplar. They see us locked in tangles of inconsistent intentions and self contradictory efforts to remedy growing political and environmental problems. This development may be an inevitable consequence of the evolution of first principles which deteriorate in a civilization as their implications are drawn out over time. The process is one in which people behaving to maximise individual and social purposes competitively reinterpret their perceptions of reality until the culture stagnates from a deficiency of common purpose.
