Near the end of his life, Roger Williams, Rhode Island founder and father of American religious freedom, scrawled an encrypted essay in the margins of a colonial-era book. For more than 300 years those shorthand notes remained indecipherable......until a team of Brown University undergraduates led by Lucas Mason-Brown cracked Williams' code after the marginalia languished for over a century in the archives of the John Carter Brown Library. At the time of Williams' writing, a trans-Atlantic debate on infant versus believer's baptism had taken shape that included London Baptist minister John Norcott and the famous Puritan ""Apostle to the Indians,"" John Eliot. Amazingly, Williams' code contained a previously undiscovered essay, which was a point-by-point refutation of Eliot's book supporting infant baptism.History professors Linford D. Fisher and J. Stanley Lemons immediately recognized the importance of what turned out to be theologian Roger Williams' final treatise. Decoding Roger Williams reveals for the first time Williams' translated and annotated essay, along with a critical essay by Fisher, Lemons, and Mason-Brown and reprints of the original Norcott and Eliot tracts.

Roger Williams is best known as the founder of Rhode Island who was banished from Massachusetts in 1636 for his dangerous thoughts on religious liberty. But the city and colony Williams helped to found was deep in Native country situated between the powerful Narragansett and Wampanoag nations. The Williams that emerges from the documents in this collection is immersed in a dynamic world of Native politics, engaged in regional and trans-Atlantic debates and conversations about religious freedom and the separation of church and state, and situated at the crossroads of colonial outposts and powerful Native nations. Williams lived among and relied on the generosity of his Narragansett neighbors and yet he was a Native enslaver and part of a process that dispossessed regional Indigenous populations. He could establish a colony based on full religious freedom and yet bitterly complain and campaign against residents with whom he disagreed, such as Samuel Gorton or the Quakers. For the first time, Reading Roger Williams offers readers the opportunity to explore the many facets of Williams's life by including selections from all of his writings, starting with his life in London and ending with one of his final letters, written when he was nearly eighty years old. Each document includes an introduction and annotations to help the reader better understand the text and context.

The westernised pursuit of wealth and status, or the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism - not that you would ever be given a choice from the womb, but where would you rather be? Han Sen is from a small village in 1970's Cambodia, bought up with Buddhist monks into the desperately horrifying Khmer Rouge period. Roger is from Surrey, England, the only child of a City of London financier. He eventually finds a form of contentedness at the local sailing club. This story of diverse parallel lives goes some way to addressing the West to East, money vs principle divide as it moves gradually and inexorably towards its catastrophic conclusion. On the way, it also shows: -A world where taxi-drivers tip their passengers for the privilege of transporting them. -What it's like to share a prison cell, in a mafia-run jail, with a violent murderer, on another continent.-What it is, that makes a person dedicate their lives to making the perfect rotary salad-tosser?Introducing: -The Cambodian, whose Buddhist upbringing teaches him that being rich is not necessarily about having money, and that a strong love should be for sharing. The Englishman, a lone child abusing his doting parents and attempting to murder his relatives, discovers a love for boats which lands him in deep, deep trouble. Uncle Vern, supplies some very zany sexual knick-knacks. Notably the Genitalator, (the battery runs out before the Gentlemen does) and an even more wackily titled sex-chair with unlimited possibilities. Then, his modified Massageomatic - a fearsome device favoured by serious S&M enthusiasts and repressive governments. All made by an extremely clever Cambodian. An underestimation of the vast power unleashed prompts a massive business crisis followed by a meeting between the Buddhist and the Westerner in extreme circumstances. Perhaps one could learn from the other? There is just an outside chance.

Brother Roger Schutz (1915-2005) was the beloved founder of Taize, an ecumenical monastic community in France, dedicated to reconciliation among Christians and all peoples. In recent decades Taize became a pilgrimage site for young people from around the world. This book presents the best of his airitual writings. "Very few people in a generation manage to change the whole climate of a religious culture, but Brother Roger did just this. He changed the image of Christianity itself for countless young people; he changed the church's perception of the absolute priority of reconciliation...And he did this without any position of hierarchical authority." --Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury 2003 - 2012

This is the second volume of the personal journals of Roger Schutz-Marsauche (1915-2005), known as Brother Roger, the founder and first prior of the Taize Community in France, an ecumenical monastic community that strives to live as a "parable of community" in a divided world. Taize is known especially for its music and contemplative style of worship, and as a place where tens of thousands of young Christians flock each year to spend a time of prayer and reflection. This volume covers the years from 1969 to 1972 and is centered on the genesis and first preparations of a "Council of Youth." The project was inspired by the crisis in the Catholic Church in the wake of the Second Vatican Council, and the slowdown of ecumenism after the glowing hopes kindled in the wake of the Council. It was an attempt to take seriously the aspirations of the younger generation and orient them in a positive direction. Brother Roger also talks in these pages about the ongoing life of the community, his personal spiritual journey, and many important encounters that took place in those eventful years.

When the definitive history of Christianity in the twentieth century is written, one of the key figures will certainly be that of Roger Schutz-Marsauche (1915-2005), known as Brother Roger, the founder and first prior of the Taize Community in France. Taize is familiar to many across the world for its music and contemplative style of worship, and as a place where tens of thousands of young Christians flock each year to spend a time of prayer and reflection. What is less well-known is the underlying reality that makes all this possible: a monastic community of brothers from over twenty-five different countries and different Christian traditions striving to live as a ""parable of community,"" a sign of unity in the midst of divided Christians and a world torn apart. This first volume of Brother Roger's journals covers the years from his arrival in Taize during World War II to the turbulent 1960s, when young adults began making their way to the hill of Taize in their searching. These collected insights, reflections, and accounts of personal encounters and current events offer what is perhaps the best portrait of the founder of Taize. They bring to light key aspects of the community which continues to attempt to put into practice the vision that inspired him.
