Many Christians believe that we are getting close to the second coming of Jesus and that that the end of the world is near. They are right to think that we are getting close to a change of season, but because they do not understand the times and seasons, they are looking for the wrong events. The problem is that popular teaching about the last days, a seven-year tribulation, a rapture and millennium has led to confusion about times and season. The timetables produced by the end-time teachers have been wrong again and again. This book takes a different approach. It begins with the ministry of Jesus and the sending of the Holy Spirit and ends with the glory of the Kingdom of God. The key seasons and the epochal events that mark the change from each season to the next are clearly described. The key themes covered in the book are: - God is not in a hurry, but will take as long as he needs to establish the glory of his Kingdom.- We are not as close to the end of the world as many Christians believe- Jesus death, resurrection and ascension completed his work on earth. He has accomplished everything necessary for the establishment of his kingdom.- Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to establish his Kingdom. The Holy Spirit is the Kingdom Builder.- During the Times of the Gentiles, the Holy Spirit has been constrained.- The Times of the Gentiles are coming to an end and a new season is close.- The transition to the next season will be a Time of Distress as human political power rises to a crescendo.- The next big event is the Fullness of Israel.- The Jewish people will come to salvation during a time of trouble when the Holy Spirit opens their eyes to understand that Jesus is their messiah.- The Fullness of Israel brings great blessing to the world.- The gospel will advance with great freedom and power- The Holy Spirit will be freed to bring in the Kingdom of God- Human governments and empires will collapse and fade away.- The Kingdom of God is established through the suffering and service of the church.- God may enjoy the fullness of his kingdom for a very long season. Billions of people will come to faith in Jesus.- Jesus appears when God's purposes on earth are complete and the full number has come in to the Kingdom.- The people who have learned to serve Jesus will work with God as he pushes out to fill the entire universe with his wonderful worlds and kingdoms.

Healing and sickness are critical issues for the church. The Bible teaches that gift of salvation includes both forgiveness and healing in the same package. Jesus confirmed this by healing wherever he went. He healed so many sick people that even his enemies had to take him seriously.Healing the sick was crucial for the success of the early church. The modern Christian practice falls far short of their experience. This book provides fifteen keys that will help God's people obtain greater victory over pain and sickness. Here are some of them.- The gift of healing confirms the gospel, so it is primarily for evangelism and not for Christians.- The modern world struggles with sickness, so the best proof of the love of Jesus is seeing sick people being healed.- The gift of healing belongs in the streets and marketplaces, not at the front of a church.- Submission and spiritual protection go together.- Pleading with God to heal a sick friend devalues Jesus work on the cross.- Asking why God allowed a Christian to die of sickness is dangerous, because questions God's character.- Elders and pastors are accountable for dealing with sickness in the church, because Jesus never gave them authority to control the church, but he did give them authority to heal the sick and cast out demons. Many Christians have prayed against sickness for a long time without gaining victory. This book is not for them. Most of the blockages to healing are problems with church leadership, so an individual cannot deal with them on their own. This book provides guidance for Christian Elders who are serious about getting victory for those whom God has entrusted to their oversight. God is looking for elders and shepherds who will press into Jesus' healing and will not give up until their people is experiencing the full promise of his glorious salvation. This book is full of principles, but on their own, principles cannot heal the sick. The presence and power of the Holy Spirit heal the sick, so he is what we need. The only value of the principles outlined in this book is that they may help Christian elders who are walking in the Spirit to understand what he is doing and know how to cooperate with him as he advances the Kingdom of God and brings glory to Jesus. On the other hand, these principles are prophetic. If the church can take hold of Jesus victory over sickness and evil spirits, it will be well on the way to seeing the glory the Kingdom of God.

Lack of vision and direction limits the modern church. Many Christians just go from fad to fad, with nothing followed through to completion. Many churches have to obtain a vision by copying other successful churches. The Bible says that without a vision the people will perish (Prov 29:18). A dearth of prophets has caused a lack of vision in the church. The church needs prophets to give a clear call to battle. It is currently losing the battle because it does not have a focused strategy. A great babble of voices all claim to have the truth and Christians are tossed around by every new wave that comes along. A clear prophetic voice is needed to prepare the church for victory. The most urgent need of the modern church is for the restoration of the prophetic ministry. In recent years, the gift of prophecy has been rediscovered, but there is still a desperate shortage of prophets. The church will not come to true maturity until prophets are being raised up among God's people. The prophetic ministry is a fundamental aspect of the eldership. Without a prophet, a church will be weak in vision and at risk of sinfulness. The reason we have so many immature and weak churches is that prophets are missing from their leadership. Likewise, without an evangelist the church will not grow. The main reason that the prophetic ministry is not functioning in the modern church is that most churches are led by a pastor-leader, so most prophets have had to become pastors to find a place of ministry. This is not a solution, because the church operates best when elders are functioning in their true ministry and not trying to be something they are not.All of the ascension ministries of leadership are needed for a church to grow to maturity. The prophetic ministry must be part of the foundation of the church. Without a prophet, a church will be prone to sin. A strong church needs the righteousness that only comes when prophets are present. The modern church has millions of pastors, but only a few prophets. This serious imbalance has severely weakened the body of Christ.

Kingdom Authority

Kingdom Authority

Big authority shifts changed history.Jesus announced the gospel of the Kingdom of God, but his message is hard for us to understand, because real kingdoms no longer exist. Modern kings are just ceremonial figureheads trotted out for special occasions and the covers of women's magazines. These rock star kings give a distorted view of the Kingdom of God, because they are worshipped, but they have no authority.Real kings had absolute authority over every person and thing within their kingdom. A king without authority was not a real king. He is a pretender. Authority is the heart of a kingdom. If there is no authority, there is no kingdom, so to understand the Kingdom of God, we must understand the nature of authority, and how it interacts between heaven and on earth. Most kings imposed their authority with military force. God has a totally different approach. He uses Free authority to accomplish his purposes on earth. This book describes the difference between Imposed Authority and Free Authority and explains why this has constrained God's ability to work on earth.Everything in this universe is shaped by authority. In the beginning God said, "Let it be" and it was. He had authority over everything. Two chapters later, God said, "Let us give authority to humans". Why on earth did he do that? When Jesus was being tempted, the devil said, "I have authority over all the kingdoms of the world". How did that happen? When Jesus preached the gospel, the people recognised his authority. Who gave him authority? By the end of the gospel Jesus was saying, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me". How did that happen? The Book of Revelation says that Jesus has authority to open the scrolls that release God's activity on earth. How does that work?Kingdom Authority describes the history of authority in both the spiritual and physical realms. It explains the big authority shifts that have had massive impacts on earth. Most theologies jump from the fall straight to the cross, without much need for the stuff in between. That is a mistake, as if we ignore the events described in the Old Testament, we will fail to understand everything God is doing, and the big authority shifts that have constrained him.If we do not know about authority, we will not understand why evil has been so active on earth. God gave authority over the earth to humans. The forces of evil have been active on earth, because humans gave them authority, while God did not have the authority he needed to deal with evil. It took a special human do that, and until he came the powers of evil had a ball.Over the last fifty years, Christians have rediscovered the power of the Holy Spirit. Power is really important, so we need the power of the Holy Spirit working in our lives. However, the Holy Spirit has not had a free hand to bring in the Kingdom of God. He is often constrained by lack of authority. If we want to experience the fullness of the Spirit and see him working to accomplish God's purposes on earth, we must understand the working of authority. That is why the New Testament speaks about authority, as much as power.Jesus has given us the keys of the kingdom. He said that what we bind or release on earth will be bound or released in the spiritual realms. Understanding the nature of authority transforms intercessory prayer. Prayer is not pleading with God to do things that he is reluctant to do, it is finding out what he wants to do and giving him authority to do it.We have a marvellous gospel and the Holy Spirit is up to the job, but the Kingdom of God has still not come in the fullness that Jesus promised. The reason is authority. Two big authority obstacles stand into its way. This book explains how they will be removed, so that God's Kingdom can come as Jesus promised.

Government of God

Government is a huge problem in the modern world. Many people are controlled by cruel and greedy despots. They are crying out for freedom, but political change just brings more of the same.In democratic nations, massive expectations have been piled on human governments, as people find more and more problems for governments to solve. Governments have gained immense political power, despite their inability to deal effectively with their existing responsibilities. Their failure to deliver what they promise has created huge disappointment and frustration. People often vote for change, but the new government is usually no better than the one that was rejected.Jesus began his ministry on earth by announcing a new kingdom (government). He claimed that this government is good news for everyone (Luke 8:1). In a world where most people are fed up with their government, an announcement of a new government is good news. The coming of a better government is extremely good news for a troubled and uncertain world. This book explains how the Government of God can transform political authority and solve the problems that modern governments have failed to resolve. Modern systems of government are based on coercion. Political leaders have access to extensive powers of control. They fund their programs with compulsory taxation. People who refuse to obey the government have their property confiscated or are put in prison.Jesus is different from other kings, so the Government of God will be radically different from every other government. God refuses to impose his authority by force. He wants people to accept his authority and do his will because they love him and want to serve him. He does not force people to take action against their will. This radically different approach to authority makes his government unique and special. This Government of God comes as people choose to submit to Jesus and obey the prompting of the Holy Spirit. His authority is not imposed by force, but won by love. The Holy Spirit will establish the Government of God by inspiring people to love and obey Jesus. There will be no coercion or force. This book explains how the Government of God can be established without hierarchy and control. The Holy Spirit He will transform the followers of Jesus into kingdom communities where God's perfect system of government can be established.Government has three main essential responsibilities.-Justice for victims of theft and violence.-Welfare for people suffering from the trials of life.-Protection from evil attack.Modern governments have enormous power, but justice has becomes expensive and uncertain. Welfare is costly and ineffective. Military power has produced destructive wars, but no peace or security. In the Government of God, Jesus will be judge, lawgiver and king (Is 33:22). His government will provide: -justice that is fair and effective.-support for people in poverty -protection from evil attacks. This book describes how a body of believers gathered in a neighbourhood can becomes a Kingdom Community. Kingdom Communities will be based on love and sharing. They will provide justice, support and protection for their community, without resorting to force and coercion or compulsory taxation. The fullness of the Government of God will be a massive challenge to the politicians and governments that dominate the modern world. No place will be left for human government. As God's plans come to fullness, existing governments will shrink away and be replaced by the Government of God.Topics covered include, the nature of authorityperfect governmentthe structure of societykingdom communitiesthe source of lawapplying lawrelieving hardship and povertydefending the communityvoluntary financing of community services
God's Economy

God's Economy

God's Economy is a radical approach to economics based on the good news of the Kingdom of God. Everything on earth belongs to God, so all our economic activity is part of his economy, whether we acknowledge him or not.God's economy is a good economy. Since we have his ethical standards, we can describe how a good economy would function. What will produce the most wealth is not relevant. What matters for a follower of Jesus is obeying him. We want an economy that is right and good in his eyes, even if it does not function as well as other systems. It is better to be good before God than to be prosperous or wealthy.Modern economics is purely pragmatic, focusing on what will work. This book sees economic issues as ethical questions: what should be done, not what will work. Our question about every economic policy should be this: Is it morally right? Does it comply with God's word? Is it good?A good economic policy is one that complies with God's ethical standards. The irony is that the right economic policies may not achieve the goals that many politician's desire: fast economic growth or equal income distribution. However, Christians should always be advocates for the right policies, not effective policies. This book describes the Instructions for Economic Life that God gave through Moses. Jesus confirmed this guidance and adapted it for people who are loving one another in a Kingdom Community. Applying the Instructions for Economic Life will completely transform our economic behaviour and business activity.Topics include: -Unrighteous wealth-Giving and sharing-True wealth-Equality-Generous buying and selling-Sharing land-Debt-Transforming business activities-Savings and investment-Money-Problems with modern banking-Better money-Better financial institutions.Three Word VersionGood economics can be expressed in three words (two in Hebrew)."Do not steal" (Ex 20:15).This is one of two universal laws that God gave through Moses. It is God's most important standard for economic behaviour. If an economic policy or practice involves stealing it is wrong. When investigating an economic problem, I ignore the symptoms and dig down to find the place where theft has occurred. This approach usually exposes the cause of economic problems, as they are mostly the result of a theft of some kind. Most of the economic teaching in the Old Testament is an application of the command prohibiting theft. Jesus' teaching about economic activity affirmed this principle. He described money that had been stolen as unrighteous wealth.Five Word VersionGod's economics can also be expressed in five words."Love your neighbour as yourself" (Lev 19:18).The command was originally given by Moses as part of his instructions to the children of Israel. Jesus used this command as the heart of his teaching about economics. He said this is the second-greatest command, after loving God."Love your neighbour as yourself" (Luke 10:27).James repeated the same command in his letter. The five-word version turns the three-word version positive. If we love people, we will not be able to steal from them. Love can guide all economic actions in the community in which we live.Jesus expanded the definition of our neighbour to include everyone whom we have contact with during everyday life. This means that our neighbour is not just those we like, or those living close by. Our neighbour is everyone we encounter while engaged in economic activity.

Turning Your Life Around: The Meditative Beauty of Woodturning
Turning Your Life Around - The Meditative Beauty of Woodturning is a heartfelt guide to two pastimes: turning wood to make bowls and other objects, and meditation - and the way the two can combine to bring satisfaction and repose to a fraught and busy life, whatever your age. Kiwi author Ron Murray takes us on a journey into the "how-to" for both activities, drawing out the hugely positive benefits for the soul of getting a lathe, chisels, and some raw wood, and having a go. At the core of his thesis is the idea that turning IS meditation, for the quiet focus and pleasure it brings, and that turning also takes you into the fascinating and immensely satisfying world of woodcraft.

Scandals and Scoundrels

Ron Robin takes an intriguing look at the shifting nature of academic and public discourse in this incisive consideration of recent academic scandals - including charges of plagiarism against Stephen Ambrose, Derek Freeman's attempt to debunk Margaret Mead's research, Michael Bellesiles' alleged fabrication of an early America without weapons, Joseph Ellis' imaginary participation in major historical events of the 1960s, Napoleon Chagnon's creation and manipulation of a 'Stone Age people', and accusations that Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchu's testimony on the Maya holocaust was in part fiction. "Scandals and Scoundrels" makes the case that, contrary to popular imagery, we're not living in particularly deviant times and there is no fundamental flaw permeating a decadent academy. Instead, Robin argues, latter-day scandals are media events, tailored for the melodramatic and sensationalist formats of mass mediation. In addition, the contentious and uninhibited nature of cyberdebates fosters acrimonious exposure. Ron convincingly demonstrates that scandals are part of a necessary process of rule making and reinvention rather than a symptom of the bankruptcy of the scientific enterprise.

Between the Age of Innocence and the Age of Experience comes The Age of Huts. This book brings together for the first time all of the poems in Ron Silliman's Age of Huts cycle, including Ketjak, Sunset Debris, The Chinese Notebook, and 2197, as well as two key satellite texts, Sitting Up, Standing, Taking Steps, and BART. Each poem offers a radically different approach toward using language to explore the world. One of the founding works of Language Poetry, The Age of Huts is about everything, more or less literally, as each sentence, even each phrase, embarks on its own narrative, linking together to form a large polyphonic investigation of contemporary life. From Ketjak, one of the first poems to employ 'the new sentence,' to 2197, a serial work that scrambles the vocabulary and grammar of its sentences, "The Age of Huts" questions everything we have known about poetry in order to see the world anew.

In this book, Ron Eyerman explores the formation of the African-American identity through the theory of cultural trauma. The trauma in question is slavery, not as an institution or as personal experience, but as collective memory: a pervasive remembrance that grounded a people’s sense of itself. Combining a broad narrative sweep with more detailed studies of important events and individuals, Eyerman reaches from Emancipation through the Harlem Renaissance, the Depression, the New Deal and the Second World War to the Civil Rights movement and beyond. He offers insights into the intellectual and generational conflicts of identity-formation which have a truly universal significance, as well as providing a new and compelling account of the birth of African-American identity. Anyone interested in questions of assimilation, multiculturalism and postcolonialism will find this book indispensable.

The Abandoned Narcotic

Ron Brunton revives a problem posed by the great anthropologist W. H. R. Rivers in History of Melanesian Society (1914): how to explain the strange geographical distribution of kava, a narcotic drink once widely consumed by south-west Pacific islanders. Rivers believed that it was abandoned by many people even before European contact in favour of another drug, betel, drawing his speculations from the ideas of the diffusionist school of anthropology. However, Dr Brunton disagrees. Taking the varying fortunes of kava on the island of Tanna, Vanauta, as his starting point, he suggests that kava's abandonment can best be explained in terms of its association with unstable religious cults, and not because of the adoption of betel. The problem of kava is therefore part of a broader problem of why many traditional Melanesian societies were characteristically highly unstable, and Dr Brunton sees this instability as both an outcome and a cause of weak institutions of authority and social coordination.

Teachers who are making the transition into management need to gain expertise in specialist areas such as finance, marketing and personnel. This book is the first to provide a comprehensive and practical introduction to these areas written specifically for those working in the field of English language teaching. The book is divided into three sections which deal with three key areas: People and organisations covers staff selection and development, managing curriculum development and innovation, and organising resources and information. It emphasises the importance of communication. Marketing begins by defining marketing and describing 'the marketing mix'. It goes on to offer detailed guidance for developing and implementing a marketing plan. Finance deals with the essential aspects of finance - financial records and statements, cashflow management, management accounting and using financial information - in terms which are accessible to non-specialists. The book gives clear explanations in each area supported by examples and case studies drawn from the author's own extensive experience. Each chapter contains a set of follow-up activities which reinforce and develop the content of the chapter by relating it to practical issues. The book also contains a bibliography for further reading. Management in English Language will be a valuable book for teachers whose career development is taking them to management positions as well as for more experienced managers.

Timur (or Tamerlane) is famous as the fourteenth-century conqueror of much of Central Eurasia and the founder of the Timurid dynasty. His reputation lived on in his native lands and reappeared some three centuries after his death in the form of fictional biographies, authored anonymously in Persian and Turkic. These biographies have become part of popular culture. Despite a direct continuity in their production from the eighteenth century to the present, they remain virtually unknown to people outside the region. This remarkable and rigorous scholarly appraisal of the legendary biographies of Tamerlane is the first of its kind in any language. The book sheds light not only on the character of Tamerlane and how he was remembered and championed by many generations after his demise, but also on the era in which the biographies were written and how they were conceived and received by the local populace during an age of crisis in their own history.

This original and engaging book investigates American television viewing habits as a distinct cultural form. Based on an empirical study of the day-to-day use of television by working people, it develops a unique theoretical approach integrating cultural sociology, post modernism and the literature of media effects to explore the way in which people give meaning to their viewing practices. While recognising the power of television, it also emphasises the importance of the social and political factors which affect the lives of individual viewers, showing how the interaction between the two can result in a disengagement with corporately produced culture at the same time as an appropriation of the images themselves into people's lives.
