Cholecystoses, as dealt with in this book by Dr J. H. J. Ruijs, radiologist, and DrS. G. Th. Hulst, internist, is an interesting clinical and pathologi- cal entity and is unique in that it was introduced into medicine by radiological examination. Soon after the discovery of a usable contrast medium for the gallbladder examination- 35 years ago - some features of cholecystoses have appeared in publications: Rokitansky-Aschoff sinuses and adeno- myomatosis. Jutras' display at the Congress in Montreal in 1962, informed the international radiological world of the common basis for the many different manifestations of cholecystoses. Every radiologist is now acquainted with cholecystoses, but as symptoms are sometimes extremely slight - radiological technique must be exact. The aim of this book is to inform the clinician and surgeon on this clinical and radiodiagnostic entity, and to correlate symptoms and signs with the possible need for surgery. Athens was a cosmopolitan city throughout antiquity but hitherto no serious attempt has been made to catalogue the foreign residents. In this important contribution the authors, who have recently catalogued the Athenian citizens, rectify this major desideratum by providing the first comprehensive lexicon of the attested foreign residents of Attica. There are more than 8000 constituents from all walks of life - free men and women, metics, freedmen and slaves - boasting origins in more than 380 cities or states. The entries are arranged by place of origin and they provide a fascinating and instructive insight into the pattern of migration to Athens over more than six centuries. The sources are extremely varied, but the bulk are funerary, indicating that the foreigners in question and their families resided in Athens on a long term basis. An index of names is included for onomastic purposes. In addition there is a brief appendix recording the names of Athenians who have come to light since the publication of the Lexicon of Greek Personal Names II: Attica (in 1994) in order to facilitate comprehensive coverage of the whole known population of Athens in antiquity. The volume will thus serve as an indispensable tool of reference for any serious study of the foreign component of the population of Athens.

The three major aims of the present study were to (a) test some of the major game-theoretic solutions for n-person games in characteristic function form with data obtained from "rational" players; (b) locate, assess, and explain differences between sophisticated and naive subjects in coalition frequencies and payoff disbursements; and (c) provide a common data base for bargaining process analyses and testing of both present and future models. To this end, five quartets of subjects each partici­ pated in 16 different coalition formation tasks presented as computer-controlled, four-person, characteristic function games with sidepayments. All 20 subjects (a) were relatively mathematically sophisticated, (b) were familiar with the major solution concepts for characteristic function games, (c) could safely assume that their co-players were equally sophisticated and knowledgeable, and (d) possessed a high motivation to maximize reward. The results showed that (a) sophisticated players are less restricted than naive players in coalition choice, (b) their payoffs are less variable and less ~galitarian, (c) these differences between the two populations of sub­ jects increase with the complexity of the game, and (d) for III the four-person, mDstly non-superadditive games played in the present experiment, the bargaining set M~i) accounts more accurately for payoff disbursements than do the competitive bargaining set H~i), the kernel K, and Selten's equal share analysis.

In March 1979, a prototype of a ‘Compact Disc (CD) digital audio system’ was publicly presented and demonstrated to an audience of about 300 journalists at Philips in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. This milestone effectively marked the beginning of the digital entertainment era. In the years to follow, the CD-audio system became an astonishing worldwide success, and was followed by successful derivatives such as CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, and recently Blu-ray Disc. Today, around the thirtieth anniversary of the milestone, it is taken for granted that media content is stored and distributed digitally, and the analog era seems long gone. This book retraces the origins of the CD system and the subsequent evolution of digital optical storage, with a focus on the contributions of Philips to this field. The book contains perspectives on the history and evolution of optical storage, along with reproductions of key technical contributions of Philips to the field.
