Classic Books Library presents this brand new edition of Jonathan Swift's satirical essay, "A Modest Proposal" (1729). Referring to the worsening state of poverty amongst families and children in Ireland at the time, Swift's proposal is to solve the problem by feeding the children of the poor to the rich. Throughout the text he uses statistics, data, and various methods - including recipes - to evidence the economic viability of his suggestion. The essay was received with humour, yet Swift's powerful critique of social welfare and political injustice is clear. Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) was a prolific writer, poet and political pamphleteer, born into the Anglo-Irish ruling class. He is most remembered for his scathing satirical style and other famous works: "A Tale of a Tub" (1704) and "Gulliver's Travels" (1726).
Gulliver's Travels Into Several Remote Nations of the World
First published in 1726, "Gulliver's Travels - Into Several Remote Nations of the World" is a prose satire by Jonathan Swift that satirises human nature and the "travellers' tales" genre of literature popular at the time. Swift's best known work, it was incredibly successful when first published and remains a much-loved classic of English literature. Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) was an Anglo-Irish essayist, satirist, poet, political pamphleteer, and Anglican cleric. One of the most prominent prose satirists in the English language, he was a master of both Horatian and Juvenalian satire whose ironic writing style led to similar works being referred to as "Swiftian". Contents include: "A Voyage to Lilliput", "A Voyage to Brobdingnag", "A Voyage to Laputa, Balnibarbi, Glubbdubdrib, Luggnagg and Japan", and "A Voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms". Other notable works by this author include: "A Tale of a Tub" (1704), "An Argument Against Abolishing Christianity" (1712), and "A Modest Proposal" (1729). Read & Co. Classics is republishing this novel now in a new edition complete with an introductory chapter by George Edward Woodberry.

Regarded as Swift's literary masterpiece, the novel was first published in 1726 for readers of all ages and is presently considered one of the world's best satires of human nature and society.Especially written in simple, easy Spanish for experienced beginning and low-intermediate students, each chapter is followed by a glossary of Spanish words and expressions and their respective English translations, as well as by fun and simple exercises especially designed to increase the student s reading skills, comprehension and vocabulary based on the understanding that reading is "a complex, active process of constructing meaning" instead of "mere skill application."INCREASE YOUR VOCABULARY AND READING COMPREHENSIONThe main purpose of the present series of workbooks is to provide simple reading practice and guarantee the development of reading comprehension by offering adequate texts and exercises especially designed to increase the understanding of Spanish as a second language. After all, as both research and personal experience shows, reading without comprehension is both frustrating as well as useless. *BEFORE READING, good readers tend to set goals for their reading. They note the structure, or organization of the text, and often create a mental overview or outline of the text to help them decide whether it is relevant to their goals.*DURING READING, good readers read words accurately and quickly, and simultaneously deal with the meanings of those words - as well as the meanings of the phrases and sentences into which the words are grouped. Good readers connect the meaning of one sentence to the meaning of another. If something is confusing to them, they use their background knowledge to try to clarify the meanings of words and phrases. Sometimes good readers interact with the text by asking themselves questions about its content and reflecting on its ideas. They are adept at using their background knowledge to make predictions about what might happen next and to understand ideas as they encounter them. Good readers continuously evaluate their predictions and revise them as needed.*AFTER READING, good readers often think about, or reflect on what they read. They may mentally summarize major points or events in the text, or even go to other sources to find additional information about the topic of the reading. In short, good readers are most often strategic readers. That is, they use a number of comprehension strategies to get meaning from text. Comprehension strategies are conscious plans or procedures that are under the control of a reader, who makes decisions about which strategies to use and when to use them.Read it now And don t forget to check out the rest of the EASY SPANISH LANGUAGE CENTER READING WORKBOOK SERIES Read it now And don t forget to check out the rest of the ESLC READING WORKBOOK SERIES .VOLUME 1: THE LIGHT AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD by Jules VerneVOLUME 2: THE LITTLE PRINCE by Antoine de Saint-ExuperyVOLUME 3: DON QUIXOTE by Miguel de CervantesVOLUME 4: GULLIVER by Jonathan SwiftVOLUME 5: SHERLOCK HOLMES by Sir Arthur Conan DoyleVOLUME 6: 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA by Jules VerneVOLUME 7: THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY by Oscar WildeVOLUME 8: SHERLOCK HOLMES 2 by Sir Arthur Conan DoyleVOLUME 9: JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH by Jules VerneVOLUME 10: THE CANTERVILLE GHOST by Oscar Wilde.GET THIS SERIES AND LEARN SPANISH THE FUN AND EASY WAY
