Dover, New Hampshire Through Time

Thom Hindle

America Through Time

nidottu
Offers a pictorial journey through Dover's past and present, featuring rare images from the Thom Hindle Collection of historical negatives. The purpose of this book is not to create another history of Dover, but to provide a pictorial journey of what Dover looked like in the past, compared to the present day. The Thom Hindle Collection is made up of original photographer's negatives; many are glass plates, acquired over a period of fifty years from the families of local photographers, who captured these early scenes on large cumbersome wooden cameras mounted on tripods. At great expense, the plates have been purchased, wrapped in archival sleeves and envelopes and stored with great care. Some were found in attics, or in lofts in barns slowly deteriorating from the elements. Others were destined for a landfill. Many of these images, seen here for the first time, would not have survived had they not been rescued in time by the author.

One of the few truly visionary architects of large-scale commissions working today, Thom Mayne’s influential firm Morphosis, founded in the early 1970s, has maintained an avant-garde presence among contemporary architecture firms, even as it has garnered high-profile, big-budget commissions from around the world. Since Rizzoli published Volume I of the Morphosis series in 1989, the Los Angeles–based firm has continued to push its intricate modernism into new territories. In the tradition of its four visually groundbreaking predecessors, this fifth volume packs 500 illustrations into a comprehensive tour of Morphosis’s activity. New works covered in Volume V include Cal Trans Headquarters in Los Angeles (2004); the San Francisco Federal Office building (2006); the Wayne L. Morse United States Courthouse in Eugene, Oregon (2006); and the University of Cincinnati Student Recreation Center (2006). Projects in progress, such as the New Academic Building for the Cooper Union in New York (expected completion 2008) and the Phare Tower for La Defense, France (2012), will also be featured.

Cutting-edge urban proposals from Thom Mayne, one of architecture's most celebrated and controversial practitioners. For the past five decades Thom Mayne and his firm, Morphosis, have been engaged with projects that exist in the hybrid space between architecture and urban planning. This volume, the long-awaited follow-up to Mayne's seminal book Combinatory Urbanism from 2011, presents fourteen urban projects--from Paris and Vienna to Chengdu, China--that show in detail why Mayne and Morphosis stay on the cutting edge of architecture and urban planning. Spectacular models and compelling graphics accompany innovative diagrams and descriptions of projects ranging from public housing in Madrid to regional planning for a high-speed rail system for Cangzhou. Both a manifesto on urbanism and a comprehensive presentation of Morphosis urban design projects, this book fills a void in the world of architectural and urban design publications.
The Revival of the Analog Church: Why Your Church Should Be Personal and In-Person
In a culture that is starving for presence and becoming weary of screens, the analog church offers something beautifully countercultural. The analog church is rooted in sacred slowness. It offers people what they can't get from a device. It offers them us. Not our livestream, not our highlights, but our actual lives. Scripture never rushed. The story of God unfolds with meals and journeys, gardens and wildernesses, decades and generations. Jesus did not post the Sermon on the Mount. He sat down and taught it face to face. When the disciples misunderstood him, he didn't send them a correction via group chat. He walked with them and talked with them along the road. The analog church is not lazy; it is intentional. It is not old-fashioned; it is timeless. It is the antidote to this anxious age. Discover what it means to be the church in an overwhelmingly digital world. Not the content producer. Not the weekly broadcaster. The church. The people of God, in the presence of God, for the sake of the world. In Revival of the Analog Church, pastors, church leaders, and church members will: recapture the vision for faithful in-person gatherings rediscover the sacred slowness of intentional presence reclaim the power of discipleship lived out within a community of faith resist the allure of smart phones, social media, and other fast-paced technology reestablish the priority of people and their relationship to God in your ministry Your church can be the gathering place where the pace slows, hearts open, and lives are changed.

Between Two Breaths

Between Two Breaths tells the story of what happens when Central California resident Thom Miller takes a whitewater rafting trip with five of his sons and his younger brother, and discovers that being fit and strong can't always save you from the unexpected. Not long after the Miller gang meets up with a rafting excursion company in the mountains northeast of Fresno, Thom, a Christian husband and father, is excited to get about their first day of rafting on the Kings River. It is exhilarating and beautiful. But the following day, the rapids are different. And what starts as a fun family vacation turns into a harrowing and dangerous adventure that takes more twists and turns than the river itself. The water level is down due to lower temperatures, resulting in significantly less snowmelt. Thom doesn't notice much of a difference until they reach a spot called "Bonzai Canyon," where there is a rooster tail-like rock in the middle. Their raft hangs up on the rock and flips over from front to back. The men who land on the left side of the river get to shore. Thom lands on the right, where there is a "keeper," an area where the water moves up and down, like a plunger, pulling Thom down and then pushing him up. He fights it, but ultimately sucks water deep into his lungs and drowns. For twenty-two minutes, he is dead. Later, Thom remembers where he was during those long minutes-in heaven, where he sees his deceased niece who hugs him and tells him it's not his time and he must go back. Immediately, he's in his body, then taken to the hospital, where it's up and down until he finally recovers. In this true story, the author creatively weaves in flashbacks to other times when the daring risk-taker could have easily lost his life. However, the fact that he lives today suggests there is something more. In the final few chapters, Thom reveals the source of his extraordinary life and how uniquely he discovered it. Buckle in for the heart-pounding, heart-warming ride.

Ingmar Bergman.

This unique text discusses the mathematical principles behind Megalithic stone circles, and how these were used for observing lunar cycles in prehistoric times. The author, A. Thom, shows that stone circles were precisely planned and laid out in accordance with certain geometric figures in the classic Pythagorean tradition. Containing some mathematical and astronomical details, along with notes on site survey and location, this book is ideal for amateur enthusiasts and academicians of archaeology, astronomy, and mathematics.
The Musician as Interpreter

The Musician as Interpreter

Paul Thom

Pennsylvania State University Press
2007
sidottu
Among the many practices in which musicians engage are several that may be viewed as modes of interpretation, a kind of interpretation that Paul Thom calls "performative" to contrast it with another kind he calls "critical." The difference is that the latter discusses a musical work; the former presents or enacts it. This book aims at making the case for understanding these activities of transcribing, varying, and realizing music as all forms of interpretation and, indeed, for seeing performative interpretation overall as a paradigm of what interpretation is. Thom devotes a chapter to each of the three types and, to make his philosophical points musically concrete, provides a wealth of illustrations ranging from classical music to jazz and involving performers as diverse as Toscanini and Billie Holiday.
