The Burden of the Past

The Burden of the Past

English translation, analysis, and contextualization of Walser's notorious but little-examined Peace-Prize speech and related writings. The German novelist Martin Walser's 1998 speech upon accepting the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade remains a milestone in recent German efforts to come to terms with the Nazi past. The day after the speech, Ignatz Bubis, leader of Germany's Jewish community, attacked Walser for inciting dangerous right-wing sentiment with controversial passages including the notorious statement "Auschwitz is not suited to be a moral bludgeon," thus igniting the protracted public battle of opinions known as the "Walser-Bubis Debate." The speech continues to loom large in Germany's struggle to acknowledge responsibility for Nazi crimes yet escape a suffocating burden of remembrance. But in spiteof its notoriety, little attention has been paid to what the speech actually says, as opposed to the public outcry and debate that followed it. This book presents the text of the speech, along with several of Walser's other essays and speeches about the Holocaust and its impact on German identity, in English translation. It examines them as texts, a process that involves a discussion of literary complexities and an attempt to distinguish valid criticism of German intellectual life from what is justifiably problematic. And it places this textual examination in the context of Walser's and other postwar German intellectuals' attempts to deal with the Nazi past, of German-Jewish relations in the postwar era, and of the once hidden and now -- due in part to Walser's speech -- increasingly open discourse about Germans as victims during and immediately after the Nazi era. Thomas A. Kovach is Professorof German Studies at the University of Arizona.

Inclusion is a buzzword of the 1990s. Politicians now stress their commitment to inclusion and social justice - not competition. For schools, inclusion means accepting and educating all children, irrespective of their difficulties. The new inclusive mood is about including everyone in society's institutions. It has created a growing demand for schools to find effective ways of including and teaching all children - even those who at one time would have been sent to special schools. The book combines a theoretical examination of inclusion and its rationale with the story of a group of schools in which teachers, assistants and children have striven to make inclusion happen. This new book* explores the arguments for inclusive schools* examines the international evidence about children's well-being and academic progress in inclusive schools* describes how the pioneers have developed their practice for inclusion* presents the findings of an in-depth 18 month study of a group of schools which have striven to make inclusion happen

In a society where men-fathers-are little celebrated, Shiloh offers a solution.Men are often categorized as breadwinners, providers, superheroes, and our protectors. In a world that typically only celebrates the surface qualities of a man, I would like to challenge you to dive deeper with me. Close your eyes and take a deep breath as you reflect on what your good father or positive father figure meant to you. How does this man show up in your memories? Can you smell his cologne on a Sunday morning on the way to church? Do you hear his voice in a crowd cheering you on? Can you remember the first time he shared raw emotions with you? These are the experiences we tend to gloss over when reflecting on a man's positive imprint on our lives.Shiloh presents the heartfelt expressions of women who have gained much from the father figures in their lives. Readers will be engrossed by the depth of connection afforded by the love shared on these pages. Your heart will be full of memories of your own as you journey through the recollections of these women. And as you read, perhaps you will be inspired to write out some truths of your own for the men who deserve to experience your appreciation for their value in your life. And if you cry... just cry Their good love deserves our raw tears, so get lost in your emotion as you feel your heart expand with the fullness that the peace of Shiloh provides. Use this collection as a prompting to write and share letters of love to the men in your life who have been models of peace, presence, patience, safety, dedication, love, joy, and fatherhood. Overall, we are grateful that God saw fit to bring the gift of good fathers into our lives. If we did not have their positive examples of fatherhood, we can't begin to imagine the women we would have become or how our family lives would have been. We would be lost The presence of a good father is essential to the growth of women, so we appreciate being able to respect these fathers as men and as fathers. Because of them, we have much to look forward to.As you read this book and share it with your fathers and role models, we certainly pray you take the opportunity to share writings of your own with the men who deserve to know they are loved and appreciated. They NEED to know For all they have given us, this small token of thanks is just a wee blip in comparison. Take time to share your love with your Shiloh. Give them a gift they will never forget. Our fathers aren't the immortal superheroes we like to characterize them as. They are men who were once boys. They have experienced many of life's trials and tribulations. These experiences are often the only reference they have before they are placed in the parental role. This is especially true for men who had no positive father figures participating in their own lives with love and consistency.Although we lean on the strength of men quite frequently, in this book, you'll find stories, recollections, and memories that highlight the soft and gentle side of men. These encounters have made such an impact that they must be immortalized by pen and paper. No matter the relation or the title given to him, there is a soul string attached to us in some way that comes from a good man. Allow yourself to get wrapped up in every single word. Feel the emotions that we all can relate to as children who grew up with a male figure in their lives. Whether the male model is an uncle, a grandfather, a daddy, a father, a stepfather, or a male figure with close ties to your family, these men impact our lives with their presence. Equally, they affect us in times of their absence.

Simulation Of Beef Cattle Production Systems And Its Use In Economic Analysis

Economic analysis of beef cattle production has been limited by the inability to fully describe the underlying production process. Except for confined feeding of cattle, beef cattle production is the process of growing cattle who consume forages. The animal and the forage possess attributes of both factors and products of production. The production of forage constitutes one production process, animal growth is another production process, and reproduction by female animals is a third production process. Cattle production involves all three processes in such a manner that each influences the outcome of the other. Each process is itself complex and analysis is further complicated when all three are considered simultaneously.

Integrated Assessment of Health and Sustainability of Agroecosystems

Integrated Assessment of Health and Sustainability of Agroecosystems

CRC Press Inc
2008
sidottu
Exploring the implementation of participatory, multistakeholder, and transdisciplinary ecosystem health research, Integrated Assessment of Health and Sustainability of Agroecosystems combines the latest theories in complexity and management with practical tools and approaches for sustainable rural development research. Although the text focuses on smallholder farming communities in the central highlands of Kenya, the material discussed can be—and has been—effectively applied to agroecosystems in many other parts of the world. After showing how the agroecosystem health framework was successfully adapted in a smallholder-dominated agroecosystem, the book integrates participatory methods, systems analyses, pulse process models, and soft systems methods in an open-ended, adaptive R&D process. It then looks at how to use correspondence analysis to refine a research-based suite of indicators and analyze data obtained using indicators. Incorporating the authors’ pioneering work in the ecosystem health field, this book demonstrates the potential of the agroecosystem health paradigm as a framework in the decision-making processes of agricultural communities in a tropical highlands area.
