The Barber; or, Timothy Priestley Shaved, as Reflected From his own Looking Glass. The Operator William Huntington, S.S.
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Paul's letters to Timothy and Titus are well-known for their encouragement to these two young leaders. Many people are familiar with passages such as "...a workman that needs not to be ashamed..." "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God..." "For the love of money is the root of all evil..."For many years these letters have been the source for instructions to churches and church leaders. Paul's writings, however, go beyond elders and deacons. There are specific directions for husbands, wives, old men, and young women. Through these letters we read about working together in our homes, at church, and in the workplace. "Ready to Receive, Ready to Share" presents a unique "3-D" approach to studying Paul's letters known as I Timothy, II Timothy, and Titus. Four main themes that are found in each letter are studied in parallel. Rather than starting with the first verse of I Timothy and working to the last verse in Titus, this study identifies these common themes and examines all three letters at the same time. This Bible study guide includes 13 lessons for individuals or small groups. The questions and study material are intended for participants who are high school age through adults.

First Published in 2000. THE ANCIENT CHRISTIAN COMMENTARY ON SCRIPTURE is a unique twenty-seven-volume series encompassing all of Scripture and offering contemporary readers the opportunity to study for themselves the key writings of the early church fathers. Arranged by the books of the Bible, each portion of commentary allows the living voices of the church in its formative centuries to speak as they engage the sacred page of Scripture. While Patristic commentary on St. Paul's shorter letters-Colossians, 1-2 Thessalonians, the Pastorals and Philemon-was not so extensive as that on his longer letters, certain passages in these letters proved particularly important in doctrinal disputes and practical church matters. Pivotal in controversies with the Arians and the Gnostics, the most commented-upon christological text amid these letters was Colossians 1:15-20, where Jesus is declared the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation. In other texts scattered throughout the Pastorals, the fathers found ample support for the divinity of the Son and the Spirit and for the full union of humanity and divinity in the one redeemer, the one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5). These early Christian commentators also looked to the Pastorals, where Pauline authorship was assumed, for important ethical and moral teaching, as well as explicit qualifications for choosing church leaders and guidelines for overseeing the work and behavior of widows. Chief among the Eastern commentators and widely excerpted throughout this volume is John Chrysostom, praised for his pastoral insight and shrewd, generous empathy with the apostle Paul. Other Greek commentators whose work is cited include Theodoret of Cyr, Theodore of Mopsuestia, Severian of Gabala, Ignatius of Antioch, Justin Martyr, lrenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, Athanasius, Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus and Gregory of Nyssa. Among Western commentators Augustine dominates. His work is joined by that of Ambrosiaster, Pelagius, Jerome, Hippolytus, Tertullian, Novatian, Cyprian of Carthage, Hilary of Poitiers and Ambrose among others. Of particular interest for their ascetical and devotional insight are works from Syrian and Egyptian churches, including Aphrahat, Ephrem the Syrian, Isaac of Nineveh and Philoxenus of Mabbug. This volume opens up a treasure house of ancient wisdom that allows these faithful witnesses, some appearing here in English translation for the first time, to speak with eloquence and intellectual acumen to the church today.
Hide and Go Seek / Going to St. Ives: (Inspector Timothy Fowler, Golden-Age Detective Mysteries)
Hide and Go Seek: Joan Pell checks into the Almeda, a quiet New York residential hotel, for a weekend trip, happy to be away from her government job in Washington, "typing and filing stupid routine reports." A gunshot from an apartment above soon sets her weekend on a very different path, as she becomes embroiled in the murder investigation of Lina Castle. Castle had registered under an assumed name, but Inspector Timothy Fowler clearly suspects others aren't telling the truth, either. Fowler takes Joan under his wing, but seems to be keeping a very professional eye on her. . . . One 1933 reviewer noted: "The plot is cleverly constructed, the book is neatly written and the end is a nice surprise. Could you ask for more?"Going to St. Ives: Miss Belinda Stebbins teaches English at a very proper girls' college near Philadelphia. Arriving in Baltimore to accept an honorary degree (accompanied by her cat, Emma), Miss Stebbins is just in time to see a man run out of St. Ives' Cathedral into the street, where he is hit by a car. Taking refuge in the cathedral, she faints, reviving only to find herself in the presence of a corpse. What follows is a whirlwind of action and investigation. Miss Stebbins finds herself under suspicion, but with a certain New York police inspector in her corner, she might just find her way out. . . . From a 1936 review: "Colver Harris displays an ingenuity and a humor that will find her] a welcome addition to the mystery story writers."For more golden-age detective fiction, visit CoachwhipBooks.com.
