Gerhard J rs, letzter wissenschaftlicher Assistent bei Prof. Wilhelm Flitner an der Universit t Hamburg (1962-1965), hat sich in seinem Ruhestand verst rkt der Aufarbeitung der Geschichte Wilhelm Flitners gewidmet. J rs' (08.08.1931) bewegte Zeiten begannen mit der Kindheit in Hamburg-Eimsb ttel. Er studierte Erziehungswissenschaft und Theologie (nach zwei Semestern Mathematik) an der Universit t Hamburg und schloss sein Studium am 15. Dezember 1954 mit der Ersten Lehrerpr fung bei Professor Flitner ab. Von 1955 bis 1962 arbeitete J rs zun chst als Lehrer an der Haupt- und Realschule Steinadlerweg in Hamburg-Billstedt, absolvierte im Februar 1959 sein zweites Staatsexamen und wurde 1962 Assistent und Doktorand bei Prof. Flitner. Es folgte von 1967 bis 1993 die Lehrt tigkeit als Seminarleiter am "Staatlichen Studienseminar Hamburg" mit Abordnungen an das Institut f r Lehrerfortbildung (1979-1987), an das "Gymnasium St. Georg" (1979-1987) und an die "Erich K stner-Gesamtschule" (1987-1991). Seine Arbeitsschwerpunkte waren Versuche zur Unterrichtsreform bei den Themen Offener Unterricht und Projektunterricht. Diese Versuche f hrten 1979 zur Einrichtung des "Beratungsdienstes f r den Projektunterricht" am "Institut f r Lehrerfortbildung" in Hamburg. Seit 2008 arbeitete Gerhard J rs mit Unterst tzung der Hamburger Bibliothek f r Universit tsgeschichte und ihres damaligen Leiters Eckart Krause an der Biografie Wilhelm Flitners.

In dem hier vorgelegten Buch geht es um die erfolgreichen Selbsterfindungen des preu ischen Juristen Wilhelm Stieber (1818-1882). Sein Kabinettst ck war ein im Jahre 1866 begangener Identit tsdiebstahl, der ohne die tatkr ftige Mitwirkung des Regierungschefs Otto von Bismarck unm glich gewesen w re. Stieber machte zeitlebens den Eindruck, dass er lieber jemand anderer w re als er selbst. Nicht dass er das n tig gehabt h tte. Er begann als erfolgreicher Schriftsteller, Journalist und Herausgeber, wurde dann ein erfolgreicher Strafverteidiger, nach seinem Eintritt in die Berliner Polizei ein erfolgreicher Ermittler, aber auch ein u erst umstrittener Chef der Berliner Kriminalpolizei mit zweifelhaften Erfolgen, und nach seinem Wechsel in den Dienst Bismarcks erneut ein erfolgreicher Ermittler, aber auch der selbsterfundene Chef der preu ischen Feldpolizei der Kriege von 1866 und 1870/71. Da Stiebers Selbsterfindungen ihren Weg in die von ihm hinterlassenen Papiere fanden, gab ihre Ver ffentlichung Generationen von Schriftstellern die M glichkeit, ihn der Nachwelt nicht weniger einfallsreich als den Mann zu pr sentieren, der den preu ischen Geheimdienst in eine kriegsentscheidende Wunderwaffe verwandelte, weil die von ihm gef hrten Agentenarmee die Voraussetzung f r die schnellen Erfolge der preu ischen Armee in sterreich und Frankreich geschaffen hat. Daher verdanken die modernen Geheimdienste auch Stieber das allgemeine Ansehen, das sie heute weltweit genie en. Regierungsdirektor im BND a. D. Hilmar-Detlef Br ckner ist bei seinen Recherchen zur Geschichte des deutschen Geheimdienstes auf Wilhelm Stieber gesto en.

Wilhelm Canaris lebte von 1936 bis 1944 mit seiner Ehefrau Erika und den beiden T chtern Eva und Brigitte in Berlin im heutigen Walds ngerpfad und war Mitglied der evangelischen Kirchengemeinde Schlachtensee. Diese Brosch re entstand im Rahmen eines Gemeindeabends am 14. Juni 2019 in der Johanneskirche Schlachtensee, Berlin. Drei Referenten gelang zusammen ein neuer Blick auf den Nachrichtendienstchef und Widerst ndler Wilhelm Canaris. Die Veranstaltung war aber auch ein Akt der deutsch-amerikanischen Wiedergutmachung.
