An edited text of the teaching of Adam of Bockenfield, a key figure in the history of the introduction of Aristotle's natural philosophy in England. It offers an edition of three early Latin commentaries on the tract On memory and recollection, all of them produced in the nascent Faculty of Arts at the University of Oxford. The book consists of three main sections. The introduction to the critical edition enlightens the complex history of the manuscripts and the scientific method followed by the editors. The historical and doctrinal introduction tries to illustrate the difficult reception of Aristotelian theories of memory in a context where other competing theories pre-existed and where natural philosophy as a university discipline was in the process of being built at Oxford. The last section consists of the critical edition of the Latin text of three commentaries on the De memoria et reminiscentia by Aristotle, two anonymous and one by Adam of Bockenfield, as well as in the English translation of the latter.

The Clarendon edition of Adam Bede (1859) is the first critical edition of the work that established George Eliot's reputation. Its extensive textual apparatus lists manuscript and first edition variants from the copy-text, which is the corrected eighth edition of 1861 -- her last revision of the book. The introduction locates the genesis of the novel in Eliot's family history, her travels, and her reading of literature and biography, and describes the composition process, including her debate with the publisher John Blackwood about the suitability of the subject-matter for a family audience, as both author and publisher anticipated its appearing initially in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine. Using Blackwood's publication ledgers, it also establishes the details of the eleven complete or nearly complete resettings of the novel in Eliot's lifetime; and examines the author's revisions to a manuscript that is popularly, but erroneously, thought to have been little altered, giving detailed attention to the dialect in the context of more than 900 variants between manuscript and first edition.

Adam Usk, the full details of whose remarkable life are here revealed for the first time, was born in Usk around the middle of the fourteenth century. Through the patronage of the Mortimer family - the earls of March - he studied law at Oxford, eventually rising to hold a chair in civil law there, before entering the service of Archbishop Arundel and, ultimately, of King Henry IV of England. He was an eye-witness to the revolution of 1399, but soon after this, having left England for Rome, he fell out with Henry IV and spent several years in exile, accused of collaborating with the Welsh rebel leader, Owain Glyn Dwr. Eventually, having returned to Wales secretly, he managed to gain a pardon from the king in 1411, and thus spent his remaining years, until his death in 1430, in relative peace. His chronicle, which is a first-hand source for the fall of Richard II, for the turbulent politics of Rome between 1402 and 1406, and for the Glyn Dwr revolt, also provides a fascinating insight - with its mixture of autobiography, political intrigue, and the supernatural - into the mind of a highly educated medieval author.
