Some of the most talked about books of recent years, Alan Clark's diaries provide a witty and irreverant insider's account of political life in Britain. Now in one volume.'From the moment the first scabrous and brilliant volume was published, people wanted more. Now they have it and they will not be disappointed... These diaries are not wonderful simply because they show a politician unafraid to say what he thinks, and refusing to suck up to those whom he represents. They are great because they show all sides of a man who was, within his complex personality, arrogant, sensitive, loyal, unfaithful, patriotic, selfish, selfless, and - at all times - completely Technicolour' Simon Heffner, DAILY MAIL

"Alan Wake" is a psychological action thriller set in Bright Falls, an idyllic small town in the Pacific Northwest. It is the story of Alan Wake, a bestselling crime/horror novelist suffering from writers block. At the suggestion of his wife and muse, Alice, he ventures to Bright Falls to recover his creative flow. Soon after they arrive, however, Alice goes missing under mysterious circumstances. Wake begins searching, and discovers pages of a manuscript he seems to have written, though he has no memory of it. It describes the strange events that are occurring around him, and he soon believes that a dark force is at work. A dark presence has woken up in the depths of Cauldron Lake. It is growing stronger and reaching out, taking over and controlling people and animals with malevolent and aggressive intent. Whatever it possesses turns dark, blurry, and harder to see clearly, as if it was hidden in a pool of deeper darkness, or cloaked in clinging shadows, or shrouded by dark smoke, or covered by a film of inky water. Only strong light seems to push this dark possessing presence away and allows Wake to fight the enemies hurting him.

Alan Caswell Collier was one of Canada's most successful landscape painters, but during the Depression he joined the thousands of single, unemployed men who rode the rails or hitchhiked across North America in search of jobs.He eventually made his way to British Columbia's remote government-run relief camps, the birthplace of the famous Communist-led On-to-Ottawa Trek. Labouring for twenty cents a day, he detailed camp life and politics in letters to his fiancée and depicted his fellow "relief stiffs" and the BC landscape in character sketches and paintings.Incisive and candid, his letters reveal a born contrarian with a strong sense of social superiority over his fellow "twenty centers." Collier resisted the mobilization that led to the Trek, but in the 1940s he became a union activist and an ardent social democrat.Illustrated with well-known paintings and never-before-published sketches, portraits, and landscapes, Alan Caswell Collier, Relief Stiff offers a fresh perspective on an eminent Ontario artist and on the politics, hopes, and dreams of a generation who came of age at a time of economic upheaval and class conflict.

Although much has been written about the 1950s cult film The Searchers, Alan LeMay, the author of the novel upon which the movie is based, has received little attention. This welcome biography tells the engaging story of the career freelance writer who sold his first story at age 19 and never held a permanent job. LeMay gained success in the 1930s writing Westerns and in the 1940s penning scripts for "big outdoor" films but he is best remembered for Searchers (1953) and another novel adapted into a popular film, The Unforgiven (1957). Sometimes rich but frequently poor, LeMay supported a family with his writing and engaged in a variety of ventures, including cattle ranching, polo playing, flying, and road racing. This narrative of his unconventional life offers an insider's view of Hollywood and conveys the unique stresses of a career in screenwriting.
