There is a storm brewing over the citizens of The Nation. For decades the Tembora people have ruled with an iron fist, forcing the minority faction, the Delgati, to live as second class citizens within allocated districts, denying them the most basic rights. Over the recent past, there has been a growing dissent among the Delgati people and public violence and riots have become a daily occurrence. Lead by an extremist group which calls themselves The Blackbirds, more and more of the Delgati are determined to break through the fences and start a bloody revolution Andrew Sherwood is a member of the Tembora faction and the leader of the opposition party. He is determined to bring restrictive regulations to an end in a desperate effort to avoid civil war and bloodshed. Although he is a skilled politician, the opposition he faces from both factions is overwhelming. He will need help from somebody on the inside. This help arrives in the form of Janus Walker, a charismatic Delgati man and the leader of the peaceful freedom activists known as The Shepherds. This group is working tirelessly to gain support for a peaceful solution to The Nation's problems. Together Andrew and Janus begin a journey for deliverance which will be littered with obstacles. Violence, betrayal and lies seem to be lurking behind every corner and Andrew realises that there are shadowy figures adamant to see him fail in his efforts for peace. As the tension mounts, Andrew soon realises that his task is even more difficult than he had imagined. The leader of The Nation, Karl Engels, wants to see him tried for treason and another member of The Shepherds, the enigmatic Caliban Jacobs, continues to unsettle him with ominous predictions and subtle warnings. As he struggles to fight for the freedom of the Delgati while remaining true to his beliefs, Andrew is forced to learn the harsh reality of politics and the bloody price to pay for power. 'The Shepherds' is the first book in the series 'A descent to Power'. It was inspired by George Orwell's 'Animal Farm' and real life occurrences in modern day politics around the world.

Britain in Iraq

Britain in Iraq

Peter Sluglett; Albert Hourani

Columbia University Press

After the end of World War I, international pressures prevented the Allies from implementing direct colonial rule over the former Arab provinces of the Ottoman Empire. Instead, the Allies created a system of mandates for the governance of the Middle East. France was assigned Lebanon and Syria, and Britain was assigned Iraq, Palestine, and Transjordan. First published in 1976, Britain in Iraq has long been recognized as the definitive history of the mandate period, providing a meticulous and engaging account of Britain's political involvement in Iraq as well as rare insights into the motives behind the founding of the Iraqi state. Peter Sluglett presents a historical narrative of the development and implementation of the mandate in the face of considerable opposition in both Iraq and Britain and shows how the British maintained a "reliable" group of Iraqi clients in power to protect imperial interests. Sluglett explores the changing relationship between Britain and Iraq over the eighteen years of occupation and mandate, the interactions between Shi'ite and Sunni populations, the position of the Kurds, the boundary between Turkey and northern Iraq, and policies relating to defense, land tenure and the tribes, and education. A new conclusion attempts to analyze the legacy of the mandate and to offer some explanation for Iraq's continuing weakness as a state and the structural obstacles preventing the emergence of a plural political system.

Fifty Years After Kitty Genovese

Fifty Years After Kitty Genovese

Fifty years after she was viciously attacked in full view of several neighbors and within earshot of still more, the name of murder victim Kitty Genovese still conjures the ugly spectre of American apathy. “37 Saw Murder but Didn’t Call Police” ran the Times headline that created a legend. A thirty-eighth witness did call—“after much deliberation”—half an hour after the first attack left Kitty wounded on the street. By then, her killer had returned and finished the job: Kitty Genovese lay dying in a stairwell, just steps from the safety of her own apartment. The apparent indifference of Kitty’s neighbors to her screams—and the cold-blooded calm of the killer who came back—fixed this case in the memory of detective chief Albert Seedman. Ten years later, he gave coauthor Peter Hellman the inside scoop on the murder that haunts a quiet corner of Kew Gardens, Queens—and the American conscience. Seedman’s account of the investigation, now bookended by incisive new commentary from Hellman, is as gripping today as ever, and the plight of Kitty Genovese as chilling. When Seedman questioned the murderer about Kitty’s neighbors, he replied, “I knew they wouldn’t do anything. People never do. That late at night, they just go back to sleep.” If he struck today, would we prove him wrong?

The Bieberbach Conjecture

The Bieberbach Conjecture

For over 70 years, the Bieberbach conjecture has intrigued the mathematical world. Many students of mathematics, who have had a first course in function theory, have tried their hand at a proof. But many have invested fruitless years of carefully manipulating inequalities in an attempt to establish the correct bound. In 1977, Louis de Branges of Purdue University took up the challenge of this famous unsolved problem, but in his case the outcome was different. He will be recognized as the mathematician who proved Bieberbach's conjecture. And more importantly, his method came from totally unexpected sources: operator theory and special functions. This book, based on the Symposium on the Occasion of the Proof, tells the story behind this fascinating proof and offers insight into the nature of the conjecture, its history and its proof. A special and unusual feature of the book is the enlightened personal accounts of the people involved in the exciting events surrounding the proof.Especially attractive are the photographs of mathematicians who have made significant contributions to univalent functions, the area of complex analysis which provides the setting for the Bieberbach conjecture.Research mathematicians, especially analysts, are sure to enjoy the articles in this volume. Most articles require only a basic knowledge of real and complex analysis. The survey articles are accessible to non-specialists, and the personal accounts of all who have played a part in this important discovery will fascinate any reader. 'The remarks by de Branges himself about the discovery of his proof should be read by all young mathematicians. He describes the difficulty he had in convincing the experts in the field that a mathematician, whose work was considered to lie in an entirely different area, had actually proved a problem of such long standing. When a mathematician is sure that he has the solution of a problem, he must persist until he convinces others or is actually proved wrong' - Prepublication comments by James A. Hummel, The University of Maryland, College Park.
