Mit der Einführung der Verbandsklage im Naturschutzrecht auf Bundesebene im Jahr 2002 werden den anerkannten Umwelt- und Naturschutzverbänden in Deutschland neue und umfassendere Klagemöglichkeiten gegen Verwaltungsverfahren des Bundes eröffnet. Die vorliegende Publikation analysiert erstmals mittels umfangreicher empirischer Untersuchungen die Wirkungsweise der Verbandsklage Ende der 90er Jahre in Deutschland. Die Autoren liefern profunde Hintergründe zu den Ergebnissen von mehr als 100 Verfahren, können mit statistischen Aussagen zu Klagegegenständen, Streitwerten und Klägern aufwarten. Viele Vorurteile und häufig geäußerte Befürchtungen werden anhand der Praxis widerlegt. In Fallstudien werden darüber hinaus exemplarisch einzelne Verfahren und Problembereiche besprochen.

Various applications in the field of pulmonary image analysis require a registration of CT images of the lung. For example, a registration-based estimation of the breathing motion is employed to increase the accuracy of dose distribution in radiotherapy. Alexander Schmidt-Richberg develops methods to explicitly model morphological and physiological knowledge about respiration in algorithms for the registration of thoracic CT images. The author focusses on two lung-specific issues: on the one hand, the alignment of the interlobular fissures and on the other hand, the estimation of sliding motion at the lung boundaries. He shows that by explicitly considering these aspects based on a segmentation of the respective structure, registration accuracy can be significantly improved.

The digital revolution is interwoven with the promise to empower the user. Yet, the rise of centralised, commercial platforms for crowdsourced work questions the validity of this narrative. In Crowd-Design, Florian Alexander Schmidt analyses the workings and the rhetoric of crowdsourced work platforms by comparing the way they address the masses today with historic notions of the crowd. The utopian concepts of early online collaboration are taken as a vantage point from which to view and critique current and, at times, dystopian applications of crowdsourced work. The study is focused on the crowdsourcing of design tasks, but these specific applications are used to examine the design of the more general mechanisms employed by the platform providers to motivate and control the crowds. Crowd-Design is as much about the crowdsourcing of design as it is about the design of crowdsourcing.

The microstructure approach provides valuable insights into high-frequent exchange rate dynamics. Recent studies, including this book, evidence the prominence of information asymmetries for asset pricing as well as order flow’s important role during information aggregation processes via trading. However, results indicate that dealers quote prices in contrast to predictions of standard theory of asset pricing under asymmetric information. By analysing a unique data set of EUR/USD transactions at a German bank, this work investigates whether this pricing behaviour is due to dealers’ strategic dealing considerations or traders’ relative market power. The study concludes that it is market power rather than strategic dealing that determines dealers’ pricing strategy.
