Manual of Neonatal Mock Codes

Manual of Neonatal Mock Codes

Anne Hansen; Mary Quinn; Michelle Ambrosino; Janet Lloyd

2005

This manual presents a spectrum of training scenarios for first responders in the neonatal unit setting. Mock codes provide a simulated experience of emergency situations with the intention of developing the technical skill, knowledge, critical thinking and teamwork of neonatal practitioners. The philosophy underlying a mock code program is to enhance the confidence of caregivers by practicing emergency techniques in a consequence-free environment. This volume is a landmark contribution to the neonatal literature in that it brings together, for the first time, a compendium of scenarios dealing exclusively with newborns in a variety of acute and critical care situations. A pocket-sized code card summarises the most crucial points for each mock code providing a handy quick-reference review.

This groundbreaking book delves into the lived experiences and collective wisdom of Indigenous communities impacted by colonialism. Through collaborations with non-Indigenous colleagues, this book seeks to inform current legal practices and advocate for a transformative shift toward justice, equity, and the recognition of First Law and Earth-centered law.By presenting Indigenous stories as case studies and incorporating the collective wisdom gained through extensive discussions and exchanges with non-Indigenous colleagues, the authors highlight the ways in which Australian law falls short in upholding holistic principles and fails to align with First Law and Earth-centered law. The book invites readers to consider alternative legal futures that are rooted in respect, justice, and the well-being of both Indigenous peoples and the natural environment. Through its thought-provoking analysis, literature reviews, and insights from Indigenous leaders, this book servesas a powerful resource for legal practitioners, policymakers, scholars, and anyone passionate about social justice and environmental sustainability. The book aims to ignite meaningful dialogue and inspire concrete actions to address the historical injustices faced by Indigenous peoples while fostering a more inclusive and equitable legal framework for the generations to come.

A Positron Named Priscilla is a book of wonder, offering a fascinating, readable overview of cutting-edge investigations by many of today's leading young scientists. Written for anyone who loves science, this volume reports on some of the most exciting recent discoveries and advances in fields from astronomy to molecular biology. This new book is from one of the world's most prestigious scientific institutions, the National Academy of Sciences. The Academy provides an annual forum for the brightest young investigators to exchange ideas across disciplines—an exchange that was the spark for A Positron Named Priscilla. Each chapter is authored by a popular science writer who offers helpful historical perspectives, clear and well-illustrated explanations of current scientific thinking, and previews of future developments. The scope of topics and breadth of discussion ensure interest at all levels. Topics include: Planetary science and the compelling glimpse through the clouded atmosphere of Venus afforded by the spacecraft Magellan. Astrophysics and the emergence of helioseismology, a new field that allows researchers to probe the interior workings of the sun. Biology and what we have learned about DNA in the 40 years since its discovery; our current understanding of protein molecules, the "building blocks" of living systems; and the high-tech search for answers to the AIDS epidemic. Physics and our new-found ability to move and manipulate individual atoms on a surface. The book also tells the remarkable story of "buckyballs," or buckminsterfullerenes, a form of carbon discovered only a few years ago, that have the potential to be used in a variety of important applications, from superconductivity to nanotechnology. Mathematics and the rise of "wavelet" theory, and how mathematicians are applying it in sometimes startling ways, from assisting the FBI with fingerprint storage to coaxing the secrets from a battered recording of Brahms playing the piano. Geosciences and the search for "clocks in the earth" to make life-saving earthquake predictions. A Positron Named Priscilla is a "must" read for anyone who wants to keep up with a broad range of scientific endeavor. A comprehensive overview of all the components necessary to run an effective early childhood program as a teacher, this bright new text remains keenly focused on application and skill-building, utilizing several areas of child development–aesthetic, affective, cognitive, language, physical, and social–as the basis for curriculum planning. Includes curriculum areas such as aesthetics, affective, language, physical, social, cognitive (math) and cognitive (science); chapters on child guidance; how to observe and assess children’s learning; detailed approaches to planning lessons, days and weeks; circle time activities; creating learning centers both indoors and outside; and projects and themes with sample projects and lesson plan samples throughout. The book promotes several areas of child development—aesthetic, affective, cognitive, language, physical, and social—and incorporates subject matter areas (art, math, literacy, and science) into the developmental domains rather than focusing on the subjects themselves. There are six activity types (exploratory play, guided discovery, problem-solving, discussions, demonstrations, and direct instruction) in every domain presented to the reader, as well. The contents of the book are all closely aligned to the current developmentally appropriate practice (DAP) guidelines. Strongly methods-based in its approach, the book also imparts the “how to” of teaching, with many developmentally appropriate examples of ways to teach children ages three to six years of age.
