Since Belgaum is a biggest district of Karnataka it has been playing a vital role in Karnataka State economy; it has varied climatic conditions and soils, 56% of agriculture land is irrigated and so also due to heavy rainfall, rivers and the abundance of water, it is an important source of vegetables, fruits, meat, poultry, fish, mining production, sugar-cane and wood; the district has become abode of sugar-factories; It is mainly trading with Goa and Maharashtra along with major cities like Pune and Bangalore; it has rich deposits of Bauxite that led to the creation of the Indian aluminium-producing company Hindalco Industries of the Aditya Birla Group; recently Uranium deposits have been found at Deshnur, a small village near Bailhongal town that may enrich the district economy in near future; a 300-acre (1.2 km2) Special Economic Zone, which is India's first Private Aerospace SEZ, is being set up along the Pune-Bangalore National Highway (NH-4) to cater to the precision engineering requirements of the global aerospace, automotive and industrial verticals; Gokak Water Power & Manufacturing Company(Gokak Mills) is the first hydro-electric power station in Asia (1884 A.D) as well oldest cotton textile mills in India; the district may have more than 50 lakh population by 2021 by posing various challenges such as unemployment, environmental degradation, excess sugar-cane based agriculture economy, socio-economic and educational inequalities, drinking water problem etc.; the early precautionary measures are necessary to meet these challenges and problems.
