These are personal accounts by Brigadier Gen. Art McChrystal. Art joined the army in 1917. Duty with the 15th Infantry took him to China, where he spent the years between 1921 and 1925, with his wiife and two children, as part of the occupying force sent by the U.S., Great Britain, France, and Japan to keep things in line after the Boxer Rebellion.In 1940 Art was political advisor to Ambassador Joseph Kennedy in LondonAfter Kennedy left, Art was then Advisor to Ambassador John Winant and Executive Military Attach during the Battle of Britain. In 1943, Art went to North Africa with Gen. Eisenhower, as Chief of World Press, Censorship and Psychological Warfare for Allied Forces, Mediterranean. When the Germans surrendered in Northern Italy in April, 1945, Art handled the press. When the war in Europe ended, Art handled all forms of informational media, including newspapers, periodicals, radio and music. He retired as Brigadier General in 1946. Art had won numerous medals of honor.
A young mother commits suicide in a 19th century asylum after her child is taken away from her. The child is sent to Canada and, generations later, her descendant comes to Britain to investigate her family. Her quest takes place among the many human stories being acted out by the people who work and use the public library which is in the old asylum building.

This is the second in a series of monographs on the historic decline of European fertility to be issued by the Office of Population Research at Princeton University. It is a detailed statistical description and analysis of the transition from high to low birth rates which took place in Germany between Unification and the beginning of World War II. It assembles an exceptionally comprehensive amount of evidence that will be of great importance to social historians as well as sociologists and demographers. John E. Knodel relies on modern yet simple methods of measuring the main demographic trends in Germany and uses straightforward methods to test the plausibility of the many hypotheses that have been advanced to explain the great falls in fertility that occurred throughout the western world in the late nineteenth century.
