An enthralling, powerful story reviewer's say everyone should read. Emotional at times.Art knows how difficult life can be. He leaves school and starts work at age eleven, proud to be able to help his family. When the Second World War war looms he and his friends enlist. He becomes a paratrooper, but is captured after one disastrous mission. His life after WW2 is hard and you'll discover the complexities involved inside his family life. A moving read. His experiences as a POW shape the person he will become. He tries to survive the harrowing conditions, then attempts an escape.Home from the war, Art dabbles in several jobs to support his wife and children, and is successful at everything he tries. But internally he is lost, struggling to beat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder at a time when the condition is largely unsupported. While his working life improves, his family life is in crisis, as he battles his demons.Told over several decades, this tale of one family's life encapsulates the period in compelling detail, including the difficulties faced by many returned soldiers, both then and now. The author pays tribute to all who have experienced war and to all families and friends who experience the effects of their personal War and Peace.
Arthur is an OAP, hiding out from the world in his grotty high-rise. He’d move – if it weren’t for his missing teenage son. Today is Michael’s 18th birthday – will he finally come home? But the person Arthur finally lets in turns out to be someone else entirely. This boy is seeking refuge from The Fights – the raging riots sparked years ago by a notorious computer game.
Arthur's Undoing is a sequel to The Casanova of Binche, the second part of a trilogy. It's War II, and nineteen-year-old Arthur Comte has sex on the brain; every woman he sees is a potential pleasure machine. In the small town of Binche, Belgium, he's a Lothario of epic proportions, and his uncle and godfather Oskar (emphasis on god) thinks he needs to learn a lesson about women and love. Shortly after being executed in the town square by a Nazi firing squad, Arthur is resurrected from nothing into something and finds himself hurtling through space. He comes fully awake as he crashes through the top of a railway car filled with "undesirables" on their way to the death camps. So begins Serge Lecomte's novel ARTHUR'S UNDOING, an alternately horrifying and bleakly comic account of a young man's education in the teeth of the Holocaust, an unholy cross between Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress and Sartre's No Exit.
Arthur's Brilliant Brainwave is the second book in a planned series of six. The first called Primrose, Arthur and the Secret Solution was published in September of last year.
During the Great Depression in Boston, a young family without parents rose above hardships to show the true dignity of poverty and the power of their relationships. Arthur's gentle connection with others and humorous exploits, softly convey the story's spiritual undercurrent. Injured by a severe blow, he died temporarily and was swept into a mystical light. Journeying through heaven, Arthur received an important message that he was told to help others and was miraculously revived. He returned from heaven with ideas about how powerful we truly are and how to overcome our deepest fears. Those who believe in Arthur's fantastical adventure, see their own lives changed. Through conversations with Arthur, many begin to understand that their sense of power comes from within themselves, and that they don't need to fear anything again. Arthur develops a warm friendship with a lovely, yet reclusive, woman who believes in him and is deeply changed by his message of hope. This uplifting story, sprinkled with both funny and bittersweet episodes, will touch the heart of anyone who reads it.
Arthur's Seat is climbed (or walked up and around) by thousands of people each year. The views from the top of the 350-million year old landmark are breathtaking, yet most who tread its rocky paths are unaware of its great mysteries. Where did the name Arthur’s Seat originate? What led Washington Irvine to claim that this was a site of ‘pure witchcraft’? And who concealed seventeen dolls on the hillside in a mock burial? In this memorable book, Stuart McHardy and Donald Smith recount the tales of folklore and customs that surround Edinburgh's tallest hill.

Arthur is overwhelmed with dread when he hears that his teacher is coming to stay at his house. But soon, Arthur discovers that Mr. Ratburn is just like everyone else. In this book, Arthur is having his friends Brain and Buster sleepover for the first time. The boys are excited to camp out, but also a little worried, especially because there have been rumors about aliens in the area. While they are camping, they hear some strange noises and see a light, which they believe to be aliens Arthur figures out that it is just his little sister, D.W., playing a prank on them, so the boys decide to play another back on her. D.W. wakes up the whole neighborhood with her screams over the "alien," a cardboard figure that the boys created. The drawings in this book are similar to what is later found in the Arthur TV series. They add more humor to the story because they show facial expressions and "extras" that are not found in the quick descriptions in the writing. d104 copyright (c) 2014 Meghan Henwood - Children's Literature Review
