Women in Japanese Religions

Women in Japanese Religions

Barbara R. Ambros

New York University Press
2015
sidottu
A comprehensive history of women in Japanese religious traditions Scholars have widely acknowledged the persistent ambivalence with which the Japanese religious traditions treat women. Much existing scholarship depicts Japan's religious traditions as mere means of oppression. But this view raises a question: How have ambivalent and even misogynistic religious discourses on gender still come to inspire devotion and emulation among women? In Women in Japanese Religions, Barbara R. Ambros examines the roles that women have played in the religions of Japan. An important corrective to more common male-centered narratives of Japanese religious history, this text presents a synthetic long view of Japanese religions from a distinct angle that has typically been discounted in standard survey accounts of Japanese religions. Drawing on a diverse collection of writings by and about women, Ambros argues that ambivalent religious discourses in Japan have not simply subordinated women but also given them religious resources to pursue their own interests and agendas. Comprising nine chapters organized chronologically, the book begins with the archeological evidence of fertility cults and the early shamanic ruler Himiko in prehistoric Japan and ends with an examination of the influence of feminism and demographic changes on religious practices during the "lost decades" of the post-1990 era. By viewing Japanese religious history through the eyes of women, Women in Japanese Religions presents a new narrative that offers strikingly different vistas of Japan's pluralistic traditions than the received accounts that foreground male religious figures and male-dominated institutions.

All Creatures of Our G.O.D. and King

Barbara R. Bayley

When obstinate Episcopal priest George Oliver Dudley (initials G.O.D.) accepts a position at a bright blue-painted church in little Banana Bay, Florida, his New England-Puritanical upbringing falls apart fast in comic style, starting with his speedy marriage to a J.C. Penney's saleswoman who used to sing with "Gail and the Gorillas". Even an alcoholic priest needs confession, although only George thinks to do it on a radio talk show. As a man who adopted the cartoon character Dudley Do-Right as his childhood hero, firmly believing that the world has to be either black or white, not grey, (while envying his mother, who is able to get into the Banana Bay Country Club without him), George is ripe in the sultry Florida sun for some tropical changes.

Creationism Vs Evolution

Creationism Vs Evolution

Barbara R Castro

Xulon Press
2017
pokkari
It was a debate that Dr. Barbara Castro knew she would eventually face as a biology teacher: Creationism vs. Evolution. Evolution in public schools had become commonplace curriculum when Barbara first began teaching, but having skipping the lesson with students for years, she decided it was time for individual research on evidence of Evolution in comparison with her Bible-led knowledge. The result is her new book, Creationism vs. Evolution, which is a helpful guide for Christian parents' education on teaching children evolution and God. Her discussion begins with a study of the Big Bang Theory, in contrast to the Bible's Genesis as creation of Earth: expanding there to the basic laws of thermodynamics, DNA and heredity, and findings from Gregor Mendel and genetics. The ultimate discussion on Charles Darwin and his belief in transmutation species is Barbara's chief reasoning that God created the Earth and mankind, thus how life began.
