In response, Bangladeshi architect Marina Tabassum and her team have developed the Khudi Bari – Little House: A low-cost structure that can be assembled, disassembled, transported, and reassembled in another location by the in-habitants themselves. A Khudi Bari has been erected on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein as an example of an architec-tural approach and a concrete response to problems exac-erbated by the climate crisis. This accompanying publication contains texts, photographs and illustrations of the building, which forms an important part of the ongoing architectural dialogue on the campus.

The Bari people, who settled on the banks of the White Nile, remained closed off from the outside world until the dawn of the 19th century. The earliest contact dates back to the "scientific" expedition commissioned in 1840 by Ismail Pascha, followed by repeated forays by explorers in search of the sources of the Nile during the closing decades of the Ottoman period in Egypt, interspersed with the often competing efforts of slave hunters. This book places the collection of Bari statues known today in the historical context of the Egyptian Sudan, from the earliest contacts with explorers Joseph Pons d'Arnaud and Wilhelm Werne in 1841 to the final stages of the pre-colonial era described by Wilhelm Junker. Many museums founded during the 19th century embarked on a frantic scramble to collect ethnographic objects, relying in particular on explorers, but also on traders and adventurers. This book catalogues the roughly 63 Bari statues that are known today and offers a comprehensive overview of historical sources and current knowledge of the Egyptian Sudan that provide the context for these works, their use and stylistic diversity. Text in English and French.
The Ecology of the Barí

The Ecology of the Barí

Inhabiting the rainforest of the southwest Maracaibo Basin, split by the border between Colombia and Venezuela, the BarÍ have survived centuries of incursions. Anthropologist Roberto Lizarralde began studying the BarÍ in 1960, when he made the first modern peaceful contact with this previously unreceptive people; he was joined by anthropologist Stephen Beckerman in 1970. The Ecology of the BarÍ showcases the findings of their singular long-term study.Detailing the BarÍ’s relations with natural and social environments, this work presents quantitative subsistence data unmatched elsewhere in anthropological publications. The authors’ lengthy longitudinal fieldwork provided the rare opportunity to study a tribal people before, during, and after their aboriginal patterns of subsistence and reproduction were eroded by the modern world. Of particular interest is the book’s exploration of partible paternity-the widespread belief in lowland South America that a child can have more than one biological father. The study illustrates its quantitative findings with an in-depth biographical sketch of the remarkable life of an individual BarÍ woman and a history of BarÍ relations with outsiders, as well as a description of the rainforest environment that has informed all aspects of BarÍ history for the past five hundred years. Focusing on subsistence, defense, and reproduction, the chapters beautifully capture the BarÍ’s traditional culture and the loss represented by its substantial transformation over the past half-century.
