Victorian Texas Courthouses - and County Histories in Post Cards
Victorian Texas Courthouses have been called the "architectural treasures of the state". Although they have a number of characteristics in common, such as the use of wrought iron, stained-glass, towers, turrets, and gingerbread, the architecture of the Victorian Era was not just one style but a collection of many styles. Coinciding with these architectural styles in Texas was the "golden age" of courthouse design and construction. The Victorian styles fit perfectly with the public's idea of what a grand "temple of justice" should say about the county's people and their values. These styles were ideal in that they could illustrate in stone and glass the power of government and law in society. Unfortunately, most of these great Victorian buildings are gone, but thankfully through vintage picture post cards we can still enjoy their architecture. This book is an attempt at the architectural preservation of Victorian Texas courthouses through the use of over one hundred vintage picture post cards.

Barry Sonnenfeld, Call Your Mother Lib/E: Memoirs of a Neurotic Filmmaker
This outrageous and hilarious memoir follows a film and television director's life, from his idiosyncratic upbringing to his unexpected career as the director behind such huge film franchises as The Addams Family and Men in Black. Barry Sonnenfeld's philosophy is, "Regret the Past. Fear the Present. Dread the Future." Told in his unmistakable voice, Barry Sonnenfeld, Call Your Mother is a laugh-out-loud memoir about coming of age. Constantly threatened with suicide by his over-protective mother, disillusioned by the father he worshiped, and abused by a demonic relative, Sonnenfeld somehow went on to become one of Hollywood's most successful producers and directors.Written with poignant insight and real-life irony, the book follows Sonnenfeld from childhood as a French horn player through graduate film school at NYU, where he developed his talent for cinematography. His first job after graduating was shooting nine feature length pornos in nine days. From that humble entr e, he went on to form a friendship with the Coen Brothers, launching his career shooting their first three films.Though Sonnenfeld had no ambition to direct, Scott Rudin convinced him to be the director of The Addams Family. It was a successful career move. He went on to direct many more films and television shows. Will Smith once joked that he wanted to take Sonnenfeld to Philadelphia public schools and say, "If this guy could end up as a successful film director on big budget films, anyone can." This book is a fascinating and hilarious roadmap for anyone who thinks they can't succeed in life because of a rough beginning.

Best known for her long-running comic strip Ernie Pook's Comeek, illustrated fiction (Cruddy, The Good Times Are Killing Me), and graphic novels (One! Hundred! Demons!), the art of Lynda Barry (b. 1956) has branched out to incorporate plays, paintings, radio commentary, and lectures. With a combination of simple, raw drawings and mature, eloquent text, Barry's oeuvre blurs the boundaries between fiction and memoir, comics and literary fiction, and fantasy and reality. Her recent volumes What It Is (2008) and Picture This (2010) fuse autobiography, teaching guide, sketchbook, and cartooning into coherent visions. In Lynda Barry: Girlhood through the Looking Glass, author Susan E. Kirtley examines the artist's career and contributions to the field of comic art and beyond. The study specifically concentrates on Barry's recurring focus on figures of young girls, in a variety of mediums and genres. Barry follows the image of the girl through several lenses--from text-based novels to the hybrid blending of text and image in comic art, to art shows and coloring books. In tracing Barry's aesthetic and intellectual development, Kirtley reveals Barry's work to be groundbreaking in its understanding of femininity and feminism.

Known as an advocate for the endangered earth, Barry Lopez is one of America's preeminent writers on nature. This invigorating book invites readers to sit down with Lopez and his friend William E. Tydeman to engage with their conversations about activism, the life of the mind, and all things literary. Even readers who think they know everything there is to know about Lopez will learn much from this richly informative book, both from Tydeman's concise biography of Lopez and from the dialogue about Lopez's ideas and experiences. The three interviews and Tydeman's reflections on other discussions with Lopez gathered here address nature, human beings' relationship to the land, the tension between political activism and the life of the intellectual, memory and reconciliation, the artist's social responsibility, and the business of authorship. ""What is the nature of the relationship between the writer and the reader?"" Lopez asks. It's ""reciprocal, contractual, and moral."" Lopez's thoughts on the importance of authenticity will resonate with every reader or writer, as will his deep commitment to story in all his work. He and Tydeman engage in illuminating exchanges on style and genre, the publication process, and relationships among authors, editors, and publishers. Both men are interested in photography and its relationship to writing, a subject on which they offer thought-provoking comments. A comprehensive annotated bibliography of Lopez's writings by archivist Diane Warner rounds out the volume.
