Beale Black and Blue

Beale Black and Blue

W. C. Handy, Furry Lewis, Booker White, Lillie May Glover, Roosevelt Sykes, Arthur Crudup, B. B. King, Bobby Blue Bland, Muddy Waters - these and other musicians, singers, and songwriters, including the young Elvis Presley, eventually went to Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee, to learn, improve, and practice their art. ""To Handy and untold other blacks, Beale became as much a symbol of escape from black despair as Harriet Tubman's underground railroad,"" says Margaret McKee and Fred Chisenhall. They present Beale as a living microcosm of determination, survival, and change - from its early days as a raucous haven for gamblers and grafters and as a black show business center to its present-day languishing. Choosing the former newspaper columnist, disc jockey, and schoolteacher Nat. D. Williams, as their main authority for the first part of this volume - the street's history - the authors have selected an individual with wisdom, perspective, and a distinctive voice that speaks from a lifetime of experience on Beale. His radio show on WDIA, ""Tan Town Jamboree,"" was heard by thirteen-year-old Elvis Presley. Nat D. said, ""We had a boast that if you made it on Beale Street, you can make it anywhere. And Elvis Presley made it on Beale first."" Another Beale Streeter recalls, ""He got that shaking, that wiggle, from Charlie Burse - Ukulele Ike we called him - right there at the Gray Mule on Beale.""The street's history is richly complemented by the rare, extensive interviews that constitute the second half of the volume. ""We undertook our research,"" the authors tell us, ""not as a study of the blues but of the blues musicians themselves. They were a dying breed, these wandering minstrels who had become the principal storytellers of their people."" Most of the musicians interviewed grew up in the rural southern areas where the authors found them, sometimes not far from their early homes. They tell of the music that took them to Memphis' street of the living blues. All show a resilience to despair, despite life's harsh times. Arthur ""Big Boy"" Crudup, who never received his accumulated royalties, shrugs, ""I come here with nothing and I ain't going away with nothing, and it's no need worrying my life with it."" In the life of Beale Street and in the conversations of its musicians, we experience with penetrating awareness a delicate balance of humor, courage, and pain.

In Belles and Poets, Julia Nitz analyzes the Civil War diary writing of eight white women from the U.S. South, focusing specifically on how they made sense of the world around them through references to literary texts. Nitz finds that many diarists incorporated allusions to poems, plays, and novels, especially works by Shakespeare and the British Romantic poets, in moments of uncertainty and crisis. While previous studies have overlooked or neglected such literary allusions in personal writings, regarding them as mere embellishments or signs of elite social status, Nitz reveals that these references functioned as codes through which women diarists contemplated their roles in society and addressed topics related to slavery, Confederate politics, gender, and personal identity.Nitz's innovative study of identity construction and literary intertextuality focuses on diaries written by the following women: Eliza Frances (Fanny) Andrews of Georgia (1840-1931), Mary Boykin Miller Chesnut of South Carolina (1823-1886), Malvina Sara Black Gist of South Carolina (1842-1930), Sarah Ida Fowler Morgan of Louisiana (1842-1909), Cornelia Peake McDonald of Virginia (1822-1909), Judith White Brockenbrough McGuire of Virginia (1813-1897), Sarah Katherine (Kate) Stone of Louisiana (1841-1907), and Ella Gertrude Clanton Thomas of Georgia (1843-1907). These women's diaries circulated in postwar commemoration associations, and several saw publication. The public acclaim they received helped shape the collective memory of the war and, according to Nitz, further legitimized notions of racial supremacy and segregation. Comparing and contrasting their own lives to literary precedents and fictional role models allowed the diarists to process the privations of war, the loss of family members, and the looming defeat of the Confederacy. Belles and Poets establishes the extent to which literature offered a means of exploring ideas and convictions about class, gender, and racial hierarchies in the Civil War-era South. Nitz's work shows that literary allusions in wartime diaries expose the ways in which some white southern women coped with the war and its potential threats to their way of life.

Germaine Lauzon has won a million trading stamps from a department store. Her head swimming with dreams of refurbishing and redecorating her working-class home from top to bottom with catalogue selections ranging from new kitchen appliances to "real Chinese paintings on velvet," she invites fourteen of her friends and relatives in the neighbourhood over to help her paste the stamps into booklets. Raucous, reckless and rude, the women shamelessly share their most secret hopes and fears, complain stridently about their friends and relatives, fantasize wistfully about escaping the misogynist drudgery of their lives and surreptitiously tuck most of the stamps into their purses and clothing, self-righteously appropriating what they consider to be Germaine's "illegitimate" good fortune. While earlier attempts had been made to stage the realities of Quebecois life using colloquial language and a realist backdrop of working-class Montreal, these populist hits were considered rustic and anomalous, while "real" (Parisian) French continued to dominate theatre and "high culture" until the end of the 1950s.As Quebec searched for a new socio-political identity and a language that could articulate its rapidly emerging post-colonial reality throughout the "quiet revolution," Michel Tremblay struggled to find an authentic Quebecois voice. Written in 1965, it took three years for him get a first production of Les Belles Soeurs in 1968. Premiering at the Theatre du Rideau-Vert in the same year that Rene Levesque founded the nationalist Parti Quebecois, this first of what was to become more than a dozen plays in Tremblay's Cycle of Les Belles Soeurs became an overnight success. In one fell stroke, Joual, the distinctive Quebec vernacular that had evolved over centuries since the end of French colonial rule had been legitimized, and Michel Tremblay, much like Chaucer in English and Dante in Italian, had become "the father of the Quebecois language."

Featured on BBC Radio 4, this is the delightful memoir of a Beatle-mad, ex-pat Scot growing up in the north-east of England in the 1960s. The only girl in a family of boys, Janet was brought up in the 'Land of Boy' - a boarding school in Durham where her father Norman was housemaster. Every year, these seven MacLeods would cram into a Ford Zephyr for the two day journey back to the ancestral home on the Isle of Skye. Beatlemania, the Girls from U.N.C.L.E, suffragette great-aunts, real chiefs, Donovan-spotting, a pastry scandal and a dash of blood-thirsty clan history - Janet's tales are amusing and touching, and vividly re-create the lost world of '60s Durham and the Scottish Highlands before mass tourism.
