In the Ottoman Empire, as in many countries around the world in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, education was critical to the state's efforts to redefine its relationship with its subjects. This book presents a many-sided view of education under the Ottoman Empire in this period. Drawing on a wide array of primary material, ranging from archival reports to textbooks and classroom maps, Benjamin C. Fortna provides a detailed scholarly analysis of the Ottoman educational endeavour, revealing its fascinating mix of Western and indigenous influences. Focusing on such key areas as curricular change, daily life, geography, and Islamic morality, Fortna presents new evidence about schooling in the late Ottoman Empire and offers a new interpretation of its place in the history of the modern Middle East.
Types and Programming Languages

Types and Programming Languages

A comprehensive introduction to type systems and programming languages.A type system is a syntactic method for automatically checking the absence of certain erroneous behaviors by classifying program phrases according to the kinds of values they compute. The study of type systems-and of programming languages from a type-theoretic perspective-has important applications in software engineering, language design, high-performance compilers, and security. This text provides a comprehensive introduction both to type systems in computer science and to the basic theory of programming languages. The approach is pragmatic and operational; each new concept is motivated by programming examples and the more theoretical sections are driven by the needs of implementations. Each chapter is accompanied by numerous exercises and solutions, as well as a running implementation, available via the Web. Dependencies between chapters are explicitly identified, allowing readers to choose a variety of paths through the material. The core topics include the untyped lambda-calculus, simple type systems, type reconstruction, universal and existential polymorphism, subtyping, bounded quantification, recursive types, kinds, and type operators. Extended case studies develop a variety of approaches to modeling the features of object-oriented languages.
Basic Category Theory for Computer Scientists
Basic Category Theory for Computer Scientists provides a straightforward presentation of the basic constructions and terminology of category theory, including limits, functors, natural transformations, adjoints, and cartesian closed categories.Category theory is a branch of pure mathematics that is becoming an increasingly important tool in theoretical computer science, especially in programming language semantics, domain theory, and concurrency, where it is already a standard language of discourse. Assuming a minimum of mathematical preparation, Basic Category Theory for Computer Scientists provides a straightforward presentation of the basic constructions and terminology of category theory, including limits, functors, natural transformations, adjoints, and cartesian closed categories. Four case studies illustrate applications of category theory to programming language design, semantics, and the solution of recursive domain equations. A brief literature survey offers suggestions for further study in more advanced texts. ContentsTutorial * Applications * Further Reading

There is no doubt in my mind that this is the best book on the Japanese school, and especially on the underlying concepts. As such it is one of the most important books on Japanese society. Peter Drucker Benjamin Duke knows both American and Japanese education intimately. His analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of each is compelling. Everyone interested in Japan's economic performance over the past generation--and the next--needs to examine The Japanese School. Mike Mansfield, U.S. Ambassador to Japan

Education and Leadership for the Twenty-first Century

Education and Leadership for the Twenty-first Century

Benjamin C. Duke

Given the grave global crises we face on the eve of the twenty-first century, the quality of leadership that will emerge in coming decades is of vital concern worldwide. This case study of secondary education in Japan, America, and Britain gives us a detailed comparative analysis of leaders-in-the making in the Old World, the New World, and modern Asia. Benjamin C. Duke looks at the educational methods and environments that are shaping future leaders; the attitudes and perceptions that will ultimately influence their capacities and styles; and how these factors may affect the political and economic future of nations, regions, and the international community as a whole. In his two-year study, Duke surveyed 3,000 students enrolled in 40 outstanding secondary schools that are likely to produce leaders in their respective countries in the twenty-first century. Through questionnaires, classroom observation, and interviews with students, teachers, and administrators, the author documents national educational approaches and the values, character traits, and perceptions they are designed to mold. Duke finds striking differences between the more innovative British and American models, on the one hand, and the traditional and unchanging Japanese method, which stresses preparation for exams and does little to encourage active student participation in the educational process. The author argues that Japan is educating leaders who will encourage harmony and consensus but be unable to provide the bold, creative leadership required to deal with the new Asian superpower's enormous international responsibilities. Written by a specialist in comparative and international studies, this book offers much that is new in terms of both comparative educational analysis and an understanding of Western-Asian relationships in an era of rising Japanese power.
